Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Comparing my project with North Beach's, he used marine ply and I used regular exterior ply. All the money I saved was immediately lost when it came time to seal the stuff with epoxy. Mine sucked up the resin like a sponge. I literally used like 3 times as much as he did. Weird.

Archbuilder- yea they were jumping around like crazy on it! All there dirt from there shoes got cleaned off- I had to vacuum it up later on:)

While I'm thinking of it again- I keep forgetting to ask!
What kind of screws to screw it down? Will an exterior deck screw do the job?

Thanks

That's what I used on my last project and I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

I had the same problem with using plywood. My solution was to purchase the wood the morning of the day i was going to use it. I used ss deck screws.

I used stainless deck screws Mick. They worked great and won't rust. The kids will have great memories of weekends in the boat, keep up the great work!

Hey Mick,
Your kids look like they are going to give you a run for your money. They will probably have more fun with boat then you do with or without water.
Great looking kids.

I used deck screws and then fiberglassed over the heads of them. They wont come out again with a screwdriver but If they come out again it will be to replace the stringers so I can just rip them out if need be.

I was at the boat place today to pick up resin and big 10'x3' pieces of clth for the floor.
The I went to HD and got more gloves and pl premium to glue the deck down.

Hopefully tonight I get the deck cut to final size (I have to trim an area on one side more) and then get a layer or two of glass down.

Deck screws will work, but what you pay for the good ones, you might as well go with Stainless Steel. I'd also get a combination drill/countersink bitt.
Set up two drills, One to pre drill and the other to drive 'em in.:)

And don't overpower the drill/driver when you're installing the screws...too much torque and you'll go through the new deck or twist the screw head off...don't ask how I know this.

I twisted off one of the stainless deck screws, make sure you predrill the seacast.

I got stainless screws. I had plans on pre-drilling and countersinking. I was also going to put some poly or epoxy in the hole too before I put the screw in.

Ive snapped off more than a few screwheads in the past too! I'll take my time with the seacast.

Looking AWESOME!

I leave for a while, and when I come back, You're almost done!

Wanna come finish mine for me? Pleeeeese?

I hope to get started on mine soon, But I picked up a project car (Jeep XJ) and got a little distracted. She'll be done next week, though, so it'll be back to the boat!

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Two birthday parties this weekend:( not much to report other than I got my two deck pieces pollied and fiberglassed on the bottoms. I also routed a shiplap joint for where my two pieces will come together and I poliied the edges of the ply with two coats.

Ok- serious question- how on earth do you wrap glass around the edge of the 3/4" ply without it getting air bubbles. I've tried three times now and still no good! I'm about ready to put it down just pollied and just glass the deck to the sides of the boat and be done with it!!!

I'll post my pics a bit later

Hey Mick,
Did you round over the edges on the ply?
Sometimes it helps to break the glass some in other word pull it apart to make it thinner and it will lay down easier. Glass just doesn't like sharp corners.

I've found taking a sander to the edges works best

Re: 1962 Arkansas Traveler restoration

Thanks guys for the concern! Actually we just started a new semester this week in school and I am teaching a new class that is new to the curriculum this year. I am up at night writing lesson plans and powerpoint presentations for the class. I was up till 3 last night doing that!
I don't think the school would like me teaching about the boat- so I gotta get my lessons knocked out so I'm not standing in front of the class saying, "um, ahh, so the bow is the front of the boat, and the stern is the back of the boat- ah, um- what class is this???"

Archbuilder- you better let that trailer alone until you get the boat painted and the seats in!
Skibum- get that gelcoat done already!
Bob- what country are you in today???
The rest of you- I haven't read a thread on here in days-Sorry!

I did get the bottom of the deck done for the most part. I got the bottom glassed, got a shiplap joint cut for the two pieces of the deck, got alot of poly on the two pieces- no more exposed wood.

I am going to try and get out tonight to round over the edges so I can finish up the bottom of deck with fiberglass.

The foam still didn't get here. Once I get the bottom of the deck done I have to sand down the top of the stringers and transom and then glass them in.

Here are the pics from Sunday
I screwed down the top of the deck to get the bow out of it.

I filled the tops of the screws with wax so I can get them out after the glass is on it.

All glassed except for the sides- I have to round over the edges

The back piece of the deck all glassed- and you can see the shiplap joint

Well- that's it for now- good luck on your projects guys!
