Hmmmm. Ithink the tape would be faster and easier . But if it where ever scuffed up the paint could be touched up ..

I think I would go with the vinyl if the colors are something you could buy a roll of. Seems an easier repair if things got boogered. Especially since your paint is fully cured. If it is gonna be a hard to come by vinyl color set-up then go with paint. Either way is your choice, what are you more comfortable with.

I'm prolly gunna just tape it. I already found some dual line tape that's med. Blue and Light blue that's a close match to my colors for $40 bucks for a 150 ft roll. Think I'll go for it!!!!

Well guys, I proved today that I REALLY am an Old Dumb Okie. All this time I been concentrating on getting the motor restored and Painted and hung on the boat and then when I went to hook everything up and see if she'd start after all the work I'd done on her, I realized I had NO KEY for the ignition. CorJen had used a key from a GunLocker and by jigglin it around had gotten it to work to test fire the motor. I had forgotten all about that until today when I was finally ready to fire her up. I do have the Ignition # and I'm told that a local Boat Repair shop here in Tulsa has a stock pile of OLD Johnson ignition keys soooo...I'm hoping that tomorrow, I can acquire a key for the control console and after work see if all my work has paid off and this thing will run. I did get the Trailer Axle moved back a foot so account for the heavier engine so I'm hoping if I can get her to run and fine tune her this week I can Splash her next Saturday if the weather is good.

Hope everyone had a great Weekend!!!

Ya know Gus...I'm gunna be goin to the Pin Stripe store and deck out the BF with your GENIUS Idea. I LOVE the stripe on the boat. I WILL be the Coup' De Gras!!!!
Thanks for Doin yer Magic!!!

Awwww shucks, Mike...thanks!
But you gotta give credit where credit is due, and that goes to the craftsman that has put the BF back into such beautiful shape and made some simple inspiration an easy thing to obtain when one looks at a work of art!
Once again congratulations on achieving an accomplishment very few on this Earth will ever attain...
Sorry to hear about the key issue and I hope the pile of keys turns up something that will work...just keep in mind that if that option fails, most any decent locksmith can re-pop a key for you in about an hour...if its possible to remove the key switch and take it to the locksmith, it shouldn't cost more than about 30-40 bucks...
Best of luck and I am drooling to see the BF back in its natural environment...:D
Always the best to you!
Gus

You will laugh Mike, but I actually have a key collection that I started about 40 years ago. everything from old skeleton types, automotive, you name it, I have a key for it. I will bet there isn't one boat key in my collection though. Heck getting a new one isn't hard, but wanting to test your new outboard out and not being able to because of this, must be like being in a candy store and not being allowed to eat anything. Please take a video of the start up if you can, You have a big fan base watching your project come to life.
I fired one of my outboards last night for the first time this year, now I've got the boating itch big time now.

@8*#*$*##*&@*#*@* I went to the Repair Place during lunch hour and... The number I took off the ignition was the Wrong one. There's supposedly a 2 digit number (not 3) stamped on the ring just inside the key slot. Very hard to see and according to the tech, usually worn off. If I can't find/see it then I'll have to take the ignition off and take it in and he'll try about 50 keys until we find the correct one. What a PAIN!!!! And now the Shifter won't shift into reverse. The tech said it sounds like the internal gear broke which he said is typical, and...They don't make em anymore. He said he MIGHT have an old shifter with a good gear in it if in fact mine is broken. I think the Okie Lake Gods are working against me!!!!:pout::frusty::Cry:

UNCLE!!!!
I freely admit it..IAM a DUMB OLD OKIE!!!! I've been working on this shifter for over a week and I give up!!!! I'm calling on all iBoaters to help me out. I can NOT for the life of me figure it out. I've had it apart 50 times. I'm an EXPERT at replacing the spring and ball bearing and if you've ever worked on one of these controls you'll know what I'm talking about!!!! :D I've replaced all the broken parts (#95 Shift Gear was told it was the most common since it's plastic) and have poured over the schematic to ensure that it's all there. It appears to work as it should but..I can't get the motor to shift and throttle as it should. With the cables off, I can manually shift the motor into forward or reverse with ease!!!! I have posted the pic of the connections as they were when I got the motor but Like I said I am a dumb okie and did not pay attention to what cable went where. But I've tried em both on both places and it still does not seem to work. I am totally bumfuzzled!!!!

This is the shifter that I have...

Can someone tell me which cable goes on which connection in the control box and then where it goes on the motor. I thought that the cable that attached to the shift lever that has the gear teeth would attach to the shift lever on the motor and the cable that attached to the warm up lift lever in the control box would attach to the throttle lever on the motor, but it actually seems to work better the opposite way but neither way totally works. The first way will allow me to shift into forward but neither way allows me to shift into reverse. I have adjusted the cable so that the motor LOOKS just like the picture which is how it was when it was WORKING before I took it apart to rebuild the carbs and change the cables and fix the broken gear lever in the control box. I'm really not understanding why it won't work. When I try to shift to reverse it either is totally stuck and won't move at all or when I pull back into reverse it will actually move the cable forward and put it in forward gear which means somehow inside the control box its reverseing the travel of the cable. Very Strange. If anyone out there has this setup and has worked on it I really need your help. I'm losing sleep AND HAIR!!!!

Here's the pic of the motor attachments...

I really want to splash her again and see how she performs. The motor runs GREAT!!!!!

HELP!!!

Just getting my updates from June 10! Man does that 85 look sweet, I'd be proud to be seen with that any day! Wish I could help you on the control, I can't even look at mine cuz it's at the lake, and I'm not....Have you thought about posting your pics over in the J/E forum? Somebody there should know & help you out.

Watch out working in that heat! I overdid heat & sun yesterday and it took me all night to recover. But I'm talking about foolish things like a 8-1/2 mile bicycle ride in 86° heat & 72% humidity. See, all Okie-ness is not in OK! Hope you get it figured out soon!

I'll admit I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer but I can cut hot butter but this thing has me stumped. It should NOT be this hard but no matter what I try it just doesn't wanna work!!! I might have to Take up Bike Riding!!!:noidea::yield::livid:

Just you hold on there, Mike...someone's gonna help you thru this soon. The iboats karma gods are on your side...lord knows you've helped endless people who have been right there where you are right now, and I'd be preaching to the choir if I said this will probably turn out to be something silly you are overlooking, over and over again. We get so close to the prize that we can't reach it sometimes. Have faith, my friend...help is coming. I just said a little prayer for you...1) for guidance, 2) for patience, and 3) for sleep and hair!! Hang in there buddy....

Just a thought, since you owned it, have you had it running in reverse. It may not be in the controls and in the lower unit. If I remember right, you did put a impeller in and may not of got something right then.
