Re: 1959? 18' Lund runabout restore

Thanks jas. I do appreciate it.

Made it part way thru andgott's Lake N' Sea thread today while I was supposed to be working. He sure makes it all look so simple. Hope to do more studying tomorrow. Thanks for the links.

Ordered the 3/4" marine plywood for the transom today. Should be here Thursday.

Some progress yesterday. I had cleaned & primed the area under the bow & stripped the dash earlier in the week. Patched the added holes in the dash Friday afternoon & started yesterday by filling the patch areas with body filler then priming the whole dash. Sanded all the zolatone(?) off the dash since I had sanded it off in the patch areas.

Cut the plywood for the transom & glued it together.

Cut the plywood for the dash & applied three coats of spar polyurathane. The old piece was fairly solid but had seen better days. Transom wood was actually very solid too.

While enjoying a few cans of inspiration I was inspired to have a thought. Thought about painting the dash green -to break up the interior color a bit? Good idea or should I quit thinking while overly inspired?
Picture that might help visualize the dash green.

Looking Good! I agree with everyone else on the paint. I don't care for that color by itself, but it looks good on your boat, with the polished aluminum!

Leave the dash Natural. Spar Varnish it to a High Lustre and install it. IF, and I doubt it, you don't like it, it's only a couple hours work to tape everything off and paint it or remove it to paint it. I think once it's in, you'll Love the beauty of the wood. You might even consider buying some really nice Veneer to put on to have some beautiful wood to look at.

The wood I cut for the dash is just a support piece & is mounted behind the aluminum dash. I do like the idea of wood but the way the boat is put together it would be difficult to do?

Re: 1959? 18' Lund runabout restore

As much as I like your paint color, I am in the camp of not painting your dash panel green. Since you painted the cap green, I think it will set off the dash nicely to be a different color. Originally, I was like Wood (thinking that I nice wooden panel dash would be great). However, if your boat construction makes that tough, I would say polished/brushed aluminum or, if you are worried about glare, maybe paint it off-white? Of course, its your boat and your choice, and everything you have done so far looks awesome, so go with what you you want to do!!!!

Also, is that a custom paint color or do they carry it stock? My boat is going to be mostly white, but I am thinking about using a light blue or light green as an accent color.

Thanks,

Think your right about a different color... too much with the cap being green.
Lot of good idea's I hadn't thought of. I appreciate them!

The paint was a stock PPG color. I will get you more info on that when I get home.

+1 on a wood finish. Wood and aluminum and a little color gives a sweet looking contrast.

Looking good.

I'm still partial to LakeLovers overlay on his Dash...

Maybe you could use some 1/4" plywood for the dash?

Re: 1959? 18' Lund runabout restore

Maybe you could use some 1/4" plywood for the dash?

There is a row of rivets at the top of the dash that fasten it to the cap. I think this also gives the cap some support. I dont think 1/4" would lay flat enough if I were to put it over those rivets & i wouldn't feel comfortable putting it below that row of rivets because it would be difficult to seal the edge of the plywood -and I think it would look bad with the edge exposed?

I think the best way to do it would be to take the aluminum dash out by drilling those rivets out then reinstalling it with a nice finished piece of 3/4" in front of the aluminum (instead of the piece I already made behind it)? I think it would still have plenty of suport for the cap & would put the front of the finished wood in the same spot that the aluminum dash is now? Think I could do this without messing up the original aluminum dash in case I wanted to put it back in (as is now)?
You can kind of see the row of rivets in the second picture of post #42.

I do appreciate your thoughts!

How about using a router and cutting a rabbit across the back side at the top of the 3/4" just deep enough to cover the rivets? Maybe use 1x cedar, or oak, or whatever instead of plywood. Just some ideas. I'm sure whatever you decide will look nice.

The windshield for the boat is cracked from top to bottom right down the center so I will need a different one. Anyone know if a glass company can make something like that?

If you got money, and it looks like you do ;) here is a link where you can buy a new one. Hope this helps.

You may have to search around the site and find one that will work for you application or if you contact them, they will likely build one to your specs.

Thanks for the link. At this point, I think I am going to attempt to make one myself ... that will likely be a bad decision???

Re: 1959? 18' Lund runabout restore

Christmas party last night which didn't end till 3am and left me full of stupid but I did manage to get something done this weekend. Spent most of Saturday getting the transom & end caps cleaned up... lot of work for what seems like little reward but they are about as good as they are going to get. Today (mostly still full of stupid) I took the old dash out & replaced it with wood. I like cherry wood so I used Birch plywood which has a similar grain. I like it!!
