Ok I ordered the tank. Someone tell me why it cost $295 for a custom tank, but shipping it via UPS is $95? I'm going to be working on the swim platform this weekend, it will be a nice change after a long week at work!

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

That's a horrible shipping quote for something that isn't going to be heavy. I'd be on the phone about that one.

Shipping is a scam though. I did some poor measuring (read: no measuring) when I ordered the seating for my boat and ordered 2 jump seats and 2 loungers. There didn't end up being enough room between the two and the layout looked silly. So I needed to return the loungers and get buckets. This is bad cuz obviously 2 lounge seats are pretty big. My dad offered to ship them FedEx for me since his company has an account with them. He takes them in and they tell him the only way he can utilize his company's pricing is if they bill the company. Obviously we don't want to do that. So he asks how much just to ship them regularly. Over $200!!! It was ridiculous! He ended up taking them into work and shipping them right from there and giving his boss money. It was like $75. Same item, same company. It's like if FedEx really doesn't want business from private individuals, fine. But don't offer it and then price it in the stratosphere!

I can attest to those high shipping costs. I tried to ship a box that has a seat back cushion back to the seller and the quote was for $65.00. I only paid 45 for the part. They said the box was too big. It was 12X25X25" and weighed 5 pounds. Whats up with that? I only paid 8 bucks to get it too me. I took it to my buddy who does TONS of shipping and it was 9 bucks. Big difference.

You should check and see if they will ship it through Fastenal. Or perhaps there is someone local to the tank who could pick it up and take it to Fastenal for you.

Here is the online form:
http://www.fastenal.com/web/services.ex?action=Logistics

Quoted from PerformanceBoats:
Just a quick idea for those who want to buy and ship things here on this website, If your familiar with "FASTENAL" they have a shipping service that goes store to store, and its dirt cheap. I have heard about this from some of my 4X4 buddies and decided to try it myself.

Had a set of iron BBC heads shipped from Reno to Boise for 25 bucks a pair, I contacted my local store and talked to the manager about shipping and he said no problem,we do it all the time and would bring them to me when they showed up. (it helps to be a good customer) The gentleman I bought the heads from boxed them up nice, brought them to his local Fastenal store and they took it from there, three days later got them no problem no hassle.

Just thought I would pass this info along for those who are looking for an alternative to ship heavy or bulky things city to city at an affordable rate, enjoy!!

Sweet boat looks like you spent alot of hours on it, i'm sure you have been asked this but how much did that free boat cost in the end?

I do not have much to add other than I love your boat... If I had fewer passengers I would be all over something like this.

You can buy those squares in a screw on version. Just thought I would throw it out there so you could avoid peeling the sticky stuff off of them in order to glue them on.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

I did talk to them about the shipping....I finally got out of them that they charge $50 to "crate it".....sounds like they are going to put corner protectors on it and wrap it in shrink wrap. They told me they were only passing on their cost, no profit. I'm guessing they are contracting the government to do the crating! lol who else could spend that much on "crating"! Oh well, they have been very helpful with the tank and have ask a lot of questions to make sure they get it right. In the end its a $390 tank, if it fits and works I'm happy. I'd love to save the money, but it is what it is.

Thanks Tulkster, I'm not sure on the cost....but I have most of the recipts. I never have added them up, but I'm fixing to for my insurance agent. He is working on quoting a policy that will pay my cost (not including my labor) if the boat sinks or gets stolen, etc. I'll let you know....but its a lot!

Thanks coostv, she is a little cozy for more than a couple of people. I'm trying to avoid screws because its harder than hell to get screws in the wood around the gunnels. Highvoltage has been nice enough to offer me some double sided tape he says should work. I'm going to give it whirl and see what happens.

Tonight I had to work late and didn't get much done other than brain storm on a cover to go over the tank and battery. I ran the carpet under the splash well to the transom last year because I wasn't sure what would ultimately happen with the design back there. Now I need to cut it off and terminate it. I just want something clean where it ends and some way to keep it from fraying. It won't matter much around the tank and battery area, because I'm planning on a cover for that area. I can just cut it off on the back side of the cover and call it good. On the far starboard side I want an anchor storage area. So that side will be open and I want to stop the carpet then transition to bed liner or a rubber mat. I'll try to work on some sketches of that area or post some pics. I have a couple of ideas I'm going to sleep on. Tomorrow I'm going to work on the swim platform, hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

I managed to get a lot done today, but it may not look like it! I started out cleaning up the shop some, the built a jig to glue up the swim platforms .....
let me back up, actually I went by a friends shop first thing to pick up some Alupanel....its used in the sign industry and may solve a lot my tank cover problem. After that I stopped by the new Northern Tool store......I had to get out of that place, man its a crack store for sure! I almost talked myself into a 20 ton press while I was there!

Here is the "jig" with the mock up on it. I can't tell you how handy the mock up was as reference for cutting the "cost as much as gold" teak, as well as building the support jig. The main problem was getting all the pieces aligned and clamped. Here is what I ended up with.

After that I carefully cut up the teak to maximize the yield.

IMG_1340.jpg

I also made a cut list for the lengths and stacked each piece on top of the corresponding piece on the mock up as was cutting. I worked from longest to shortest.

Here is the first platform clamped up and drying. Tomorrow I'm going to clamp up the second one and start finishing the first one.

By the way, does anyone have any suggestions on a mat finish for the teak? I'm thinking something I can rag on would be best.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

Arch,

I like Watco Teak Oil or Sikkens Cetol Natural Teak. My father in law had an old Cabin Cruiser back in the 80's and we used the Watco on it at the beginning and end of the season and it looked New the day he sold it 12 years later. I used Sikkens on Teak Patio furniture and it works great too. Either one are quality products and leave the wood looking pretty natural. What kind of glue did you use? Did you clean the joints with acetone before gluing? Teak has oil in it that can sometimes affect the ability for the glue to adhere properly.

The glue is tightbond II. I called and ask about using III but they recommended using II on this application. All the joints were cleaned with Acetone prior to glue up. I have used Watco a lot, but never on a swim plat form. I thought it would work nicely, but it never hurts to ask.

Yeah, Type II Passes ANSI/HPVA Type II water-resistance testing. and has better viscocity which would be better to absorb into the pores of the teak. But both are 100% waterproof and rated for total immersion usage.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

I had a good day today, and managed to get the platforms built....now I need to order the stainless. Here is a shot of my gig for cutting off the miter, more or less a scrap piece of plywood and some cleats. I just squared it up on the table saw and then aligned the layout for the angled cut with the edge of the plywood. Then screwed it down and cut the angle....simple and gives you a nice finished edge.

Here are a couple of shots of the finished platforms....next stop, welding up the stainless brackets.

I think I'm leaning towards Watco Teak oil for the finish unless someone convinces me otherwise. Hopefully everyone had a great weekend! Summer is almost here, so hurry up!

Steps look great. I think the darker color of the teak looks much better against the boat. Glad to see it looks like you can make the step work.

Tonight I slathered teak oil in the swim platforms and measured / put together a shop drawing for the brackets....tomorrow I can order the stainless.

Here is one all slathered up, teak oil is some goopy stuff after is dries for a few minutes.

You should come out to the OHBA Hot Boat bash August 6th, 2011. There will be some nice sleds out there. There are a few more details buried in this thread as well as pics from past years events.
