Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

thanks for the info! I will go take a look at that guide....just ran the compression, good on all cylinders.....I more or less checked them just so I could sleep better at night. The ignition might make since, now that you guys mentioned it, the bulb stays hard. It does run smooth, just no RPMS!

I bet it's ignition-related. I haven't followed the complete thread, but did it run at 5500 RPMs before and with what prop? If it was propped right before, and then you lost the RPMs, odds are it's ignition-related since the fuel system seems good. I feel your pain. My symptoms kicked in after a rebuild, so like you I was holding my breath doing the compression test!

AHH HA! Found the issue....I will never make a mechanic! Someone remind me to look at the plugs next time. I replaced the plugs before the carbs, but hadn't had the brains to look at them since! Anyhow it occurred to me tonight "hmm maybe you should look at the plugs". Duh! #5 looked just like it did when it came out of the box. Deader than a door knob...turned it over with it grounded, nothing. I put the #4 plug on the #5 wire, nothing. Put it back in the number 4 wire, sparks like crazy. I posted another thread on it.

I'm not sure if its the coil sounds logical, but I don't understand how the switch box effects it. I suppose it could just be the wire too. I'm just glad I figured out what it is. I guess it didn't sound like it was missing because the hole was completely dead. Compression is good by the way.

Bravo! I actually started to mention to check all the plugs for spark, but since I don't know jack about those motors, I decided to keep my mouth shut. Guess I shoulda said something. At least you know you can still run 4000 rpm on 5 cylinders:D

Hey arch,
I'm glad you found the issue before you spent a lot of money changing out good parts.
I hope you get it all ironed out soon.
Take care.

Would be a good idea to check all the plugs. On that engine, I'm pretty sure that one switch box gives spark to 1,3,&5 and the other sparks 2,4,&6. I guess if replacing the plug doesn't solve the problem, you'll need to check each ignition coil and verify that the both switchboxes are operable.

The plugs are all new and I swapped them around to see what would happen, same results. Ditto with the plug wires. CDI had me do some test on the switch box and it seems to be the culprit. They also recommended ohming the stator, which I'm going to do tonight.

I think they generally recommend changing both switch boxes if one is bad. From everything I've read at the Merc forum, CDI makes a better aftermarket stator than the OEM if your stator tests bad. Good luck, I know the electrical problems are often the most confounding.

That is what CDI told me when I talked to them. He were amazed that mine were original. He said that Mercury only expected them to have a 7 year life span!

I agree with woodonglass. Have a cold brew (preferably Canadian..lol) and enjoy the day. Tomorrow is a new day and Monday will be like Christmas. Good luck and I hope all is good.

Good info on the switchboxes. I guess I'll strongly consider buying and replacing them if I buy a used motor if they haven't been replaced already, just to avoid the frustration...seems like they are a part that needs periodic changing, even if it's every 7 or so years ( depending on use I suppose ).

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

Thanks guys....I am having a beer by the way and watering the grass...endless procsess in the OK sun! One good thing about all of this is it forces me to learn about the engine and how it works...a good thing in my book. Redfury, the guy at CDI told me that a Mercury memo that they had actually stated that the switch boxes were good for around 7 years. Who knows if it is true, but we shall soon find out with mine. Hope most of you guys are at the lake!

Arch,
Real bummer about the UPS guy. Enjoy the beer and the heat. It won't be that much longer and we will want some of this heat back.:( the temp never seems to be right.
Good luck

Your right about the temp, but that is what makes things interesting. I don't think I would make it in a place where it was 70 everyday! One good thing about being home this weekend is that I almost caught up on chores in the yard. I would have gotten them done but the drive shaft on the brush hog needs some work....I have the parts but need to borrow a friends press, but he is out of town....oh well the pasture will have to wait! :D

No kidding. We got a break up here in MN for about 4-5 days and then we are back to humidity and high 80's, low 90's. It's not the heat that I mind so much, it's that darn orb :) in the sky that I have the problem with! Need more cloud cover.
