Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

Thanks Isaacm, it was a lot of fun building her. She is even more fun running around the lake! I have been looking for a Sleek like Vegas has, but a 26'. They are pretty rare around here, seems like most of them are on the west coast. Business is slow right now, so it maybe a while before I dive in on the next one. I would like to find one with a clean bottom....flipping a 26' sounds like a challenge to me! I'd like to find a nice hull that needs a one end to the other restore....just not bottom paint! I would actually like to take out the bow birth, cut out the bow deck and make it a mid-cabin with seats up front.....put in a tightly wound small block and a Volvo duo out drive.....I would think think that would be a fun ride. On the other side of the spectrum, I have toyed with the idea of restoring a house boat....a nice big one and doing something really cool with it. Right now I am just enjoying summer and Miss Morgan. I have a number of tweaks I want to do next winter. This weekend I'm heading off to David K's place at Tinkiller.....I should get some good video, he has promised to use one of his 4 boats as the camera platform! :D

Hey Arch,
I found your next project for you. I've been looking for a house boat too.
I found something that you could really make into a head turner. It's a 1957 Higgins boat. 21' X 74', Two Detroit Diesels, You could put a parking garage in the bottom. Pull up to the ramp and drive your car out. Ha!Ha!

The first pic is a bite small but you can see the bow ramp.
The only down side is it only allows for full load displacement of 127 tons. :D:rolleyes:
Take care my friend.

I dunno bob, those two big two stroke deisels might be a little loud. I would be able to hear Arch fire up those Detroits from the other side of the lake.

Hey Guys,
I saw that boat and just couldn't resist. The options would be never ending.
BBO
Just think, he wouldn't have to call you to let you know he was coming. :p:D
Have fun on Miss Morgan arch.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

Well it was a good relaxing weekend, but Max had some issues....so not much boat time. I think its a carb or fuel pump issue....so I'm taking him in tomorrow. He has been doing a few flaky things the last two times I have had him out. The lake and hanging out was great, but not having a correctly running boat was frustrating! I'm going to do a little research tonight to see if maybe I can figure out what is going on. I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Bummer that Max is acting up. Does that mean no video? Hot son-of-a-gun this weekend wasn't it.

Well looks like Max is getting his carbs rebuilt this weekend. This should be interesting since I usually avoid carbs...but this looks like a fairly simple set-up even if there are 3 of them. I ordered the kits today and I'm planning on starting Friday night....Its going to be a hot project, looks like it will be in the 100's again.

hey arch ...Im pretty sure theres a carb synch tool ...they use em alot on motorcycles etc...not sure if its the same for the merc outboards...
either way ... Im sure it will run much smoother once you clean the carbies out....
and as for heat...bust out the carb spray and do it on the kitchen table...the wife wont mind  lol

Maybe this is a stupid suggestion, but have you tried running a little seafoam through the carbs before you rebuild them?

I was thinking the dames thing Isaac said. I guess since you already have them ordered it doesn't much matter anymore though.

I haven't tried Seafoam, but I have ran berringman's through it....I figure after 23 years its time! Besides I like the idea of figuring out how the motor operates so I can tweak Max to get him in top form. I'll get some picks and video as I work my way through things this weekend!

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

Ok so I did some studying tonight, comparing the carbs to the diagrams I have. I love how Seloc has explode diagrams that are "close".....I think I have figured out where all the "misplaced parts" in the diagram are. My plan is to get up early while it is cools (80) and get the carbs off and striped. Give them a good soaking and hopefully get things reassembled on Sunday. I found SpinnerBait Nut's article on tuning them, which is very helpful. If anyone knows of any other resources out there let me know....I hate tinkering with carbs! Hopefully you are all at the lake and will read this Monday when you get back home! :D

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

Arch, awesome project! I have 2 inline 6's - a 75 1500 and a 87 115. Both the powerheads were rebuilt by the Clams Canino mentioned above as he moved to SC a few years back and I'm only an hour away. The carbs are pretty simple. I would leave the jets in if I were you when you soak them, as sometimes they are very easily to strip trying to get out. When you put them back together, set the idle mixture needles 2 1/4 turns out from a lightly seated position and it will give you plenty of holsehot and not bog. The manual and the gurus will tell you to dial them in one by one on the water, but trust me 2 1/4 will give you a good idle and no hesitation whatsoever coming out of the hole.

Also, with the little hoses that run from the one side of the carb to the float bowl - discard those hoses and buy some simple emission rubber caps/plugs from your auto parts store. 2 for each carb. Those hoses were intended back then to lean out the mixture at mid-range RPMs, but with today's gasolines you do not want that as Merc's inlines are prone to detonation otherwise. You can also remove the jet in the side of each float bowl cover as this too is not needed and was part of the "lean out" feature. Best of luck!
