Hey it looks like you are doing a great job! I am ready to start grinding myself, do you have any tips for me on the task, such as;

What type tool are using and what grit do you find most effective?
Do I want to use the 4 1/2" angle grinder with 40 grit flex pad, or what?

How about protective equipment, I know how much dust it raises, any tips there would be good too.

Thanks for any tips you may have since you are doing what I am preparing to do.

Hi there lundnisswa, welcome, well I am using my craft man angle grinder buffer, I got a 7 1/2 mason cutting disk !! it just eat that glass !!!!! lot of the guys the courses sand paper there is !!! this is only my second disk 2.33 at home depot !! you need a dual mask , one for paint and chems !!! a couple of the throw away suits would really be great !!! in you wear your cloths dont wash them with other cloths !! or even in your was machine , that glass will spread to other cloths !!! let the grinder do the work , what i mean you dont have to force it just let the weight of the grinder do the work , it will save your hands and wrist, I also have the shop vac, going when i am grinding cuts the dust down by over half , and make sure you filter is good , you will need to stop and clean it a couple time , I had to clean mine 3 times in 4 1/2 hours today, other then get ready to get ichy !!!!! lol have fun !!! I've tried a bunch of various types of disks, and nothing works like the 3m sandblaster flap disks... the kind you have to use a special adapter for in a 4 1/2" grinder. It takes off old glass something like 3x as fast as the rigid metal grinding type disks.

I use the 36 grit.

Re: pic of work so far

For grinding I find the paper (fiber) discs with 36 grit works the best, 24 grit can work, but with fewer cutting points it can get dull and start cutting slow on a hard abrasive surface like F/G. Finer grits (50 to 80) can cut fast if the surface is smooth like on gel coat, but 36 is a very good all purpose grit. The flapper discs (at least the ones I've used) tend to get dull, then cut slow and the grit in contact with the glass doesn't seem to wear away fast enough for rapid grinding, it's as if you're always grinding with dull worn out grit. I'll sometimes use the hard masonry or metal cutting and grinding discs, but mostly just for cutting, for a small job I'll use whatevers on the grinder though.

I use a small grinder frequently, but most of my grinding is done with full sized heavy duty body grinders, not the midsized cheap HF ones. I think I have 5 or so big ones and then a couple of mid size models and 3 or 4 small ones. I had a crew of 10 guys and at times 4 or 5 of us would be grinding 8 hours a day for 3 or 4 days straight.

Re: pic of work so far

The bedding material isn't all that critical, it's just needed to keep the stringer off the hull and many small boat builders don't use any thing at all.

Looks good so far.
