Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

I have the carbs off and the bottom one torn down. From what I can tell they are the WMK series, which of course isn't shown in the rebuilding section of the Seloc manual. The venturi appears to be plastic, is it safe to vat it in carburetor cleaner or do I remove it? If it needs to be removed how do I go about it? I'll post a picture of it. Thanks for any input, I'll put it over on the mercury outboards section too.

Well I figured out how to get the plastic venturi out and back in.....a Philips screwdriver and a feeler gauge....not pretty but it worked! One cleaned up, one soaking and one broke down and ready to go. Hopefully I will get all three of them back together and ready to go tomorrow!

Well I got carbs stripped down, cleaned and put back together. Tonight I was working on the link and sinc but ran out of time / energy....the heat was on this afternoon! I'm a bit vague on this, but it sounds like I need a dial indicator that I can screw into the spark plug hole. I have a magnetic base one, but that doesn't do you much good with an aluminum block! I'm open to suggestions if anyone has any ideas on finding TDC accurately. Here are a couple pics of the progress this weekend.

Here is the middle carb before rebuilding:

After reassembly:

And finally all of them back on Max:

Hey arch,
I can't be much help with finding top dead center but I'm glad you were able to get them all cleaned up and back on Max. Hopefully he will be back to himself.
Take care
Bob

Got Max up and running tonight. Its nice to be able to just bump the starter and have him purrr to life! I do have an annoying leak in the top carb. Of course it doesn't have a gasket either. Its a slot head plug with a bruised up slot, and it doesn't want to come back out. You don't need to take it out to clean the carb, wish I had just left it in....of course without taking it out I wouldn't have know I didn't need to take it out!:D I drained the crab tonight, and I think I'm going to put a thin coat of epoxy on it to seal it up tomorrow. After I deal with that, then its off to the lake to fine tune the jets and idle. I'm really interested to see how she runs with Max's carbs all cleaned up!

Nice work. Carbs suck. Making one run right is booger, making three run right can be a nightmare sometimes. Anywho, good luck whoopin Max back into shape. :)

I'm heading to the lake tomorrow, so I guess we will see how it runs in the lake. Hopefully its just a matter of doing some fine tuning on the jets.

Arch,
I just wanted to say thanks for posting this great project, I just bought and repaired my first boat. 87' Mach 1 16'. Floor and transom repair plus, carpet, stereo, speakers, bimni, covers, seats and upolstry. While its functional its not at all times as perfect as I would of liked and at some points just took this project as for what it was, learning. Your posts gives something to shoot for in a future project excellent job all around.
Thanks
Mike.

Thanks Mike! Let us know if you need any ideas on your boat, there are a lot of great people here who can help you out.

BBO....to answer your question, it ran great all the way to 4000, then hiccuped just like before  So I'm wondering what to do. The fuel pump seems like the other likely candidate, but that is just a guess. Anyone have any suggestions?

Ahh... the ol' "shotgun maintenance" approach ;) I've done that more times than I care to discuss. For what it's worth, it was the fuel pump on my merc that caused similar woes. You'll get him straight. Thanks again for all your postings Arch.

Arch,

Assuming that your fuel pump is good and and your primer bulb is not going down when you get to 4000, you may want to start eyeing the ignition system. Go to the CDI Electronics website and you can download a troubleshooting guide for MERC V-6/Inline Engines Flywheel ignition systems. There is a special section dedicated to tests for when the engine will not accelerate beyond 4000 RPMs. You could have any combination of issues involving the idle stablizer, rectifier, stator, or switchboxes potentially, but the CDI guide will help you to rule things out. I have a 87 inline 6 115 that had similar symptoms, and I had a bad connection from one of the stator leads as well as a bad rectifier. Hope this helps!

CWKboat sound like he know's what he's talking about. My primer bulb would not firm up in my case... you could actually hear it blowing in the fuel pump (diaphram) every time I squeezed it. I certainly didn't discover it using "proper troubleshooting procedures" but I got lucky... that time.

Arch,

Here's the troubleshooting guide. If this takes you to the page with all the listings, you want to scroll down and click on "Mercury6cylinder.pdf." That will bring up the guide for 1978-1996 6 cylinder Merc engines. Once you open the guide, there is a section for "Engine will not accelerate beyond 3000-4000 RPMs."

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

thanks for the info! I will go take a look at that guide....just ran the compression, good on all cylinders.....I more or less checked them just so I could sleep better at night. The ignition might make since, now that you guys mentioned it, the bulb stays hard. It does run smooth, just no RPMS!
