Thanks for all the comments guys! It feels good to be on the down hill side! There is still a lot of work, but she is getting close! Tonight I stripped down Max's stickers, and got the glue off.

Tomorrow I'm going to work on finishing the prep work on him. I'm also sending my decal guy a shot of this sticker to see if he can reproduce it.

I also picked up the pin stripe tape today at the paint store. I think it will look really cool! I forked over the bucks to get the 3M strip tape, but I think it will outlast the cheap stuff by years.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend! Hopefully Max is painted tomorrow or Sunday morning!

I cant wait to see what you do with max since i have the 850 version. I would like to tie it into the boat somehow but I dont want to paint over the stickers and make it look like crap. So ill let you work your magic and maybe steel your ideas.

I took the fender to the paint store to pick out the stripe. They had about a zillion colors, but I kept coming back to that one. I think it will turn out pretty nice. I think I may have to put Max on the engine hoist.....which I'm not sure if it will fit in the paint booth! It maybe too tall. Guess I will find out later today. Have I mentioned I'm really sick of sanding! :D

Arch, you made the same mistake I did. The trim tab is also an annode. You are not supposed to paint it. I need to take it off and strip the paint off it. It is made of zinc so it keeps the rest of the motor from corroding. If its painted it doesnt work. Other than that it looks great. I am thinking of painting mine purple when I do the trailer but I want to see what yours looks like when you are done and what you are going to do for decals.

Its taped off so we should be good. The decals are on my bar, but the guys at the paint place said to wait 45 days before putting them on.

is the mercury and stripes just decals? They looked like they used the metal under them to make them have a chrome effect or something.

Max is a later model, the early models had some polished aluminium or chrome on them. Max just has decals....I must say I thought about buying the older cowl set, its really sharp, but I couldn't fine a good clean set.

Come on down fauxmeister, I'm out in eastern OK during the summer. Lots of lakes out there, you should try them out.

That reeeeeeaaaallly stinks!!! I was hoping to see the decals on that merc and it on the back of your boat. I don't know if I could wait 45 days! Maybe a week and I'd be slapping them on. Why 45 days? Does catalyzed paint release gas or need air to cure all the way? I think your paint will really pop with those pin stripes. Nice color choice as well.
Bummer on the decals:redface:,

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

According to DuPont it off-gasses that long...so it can cause the vinyl to bubble up! I don't want $100 worth of stickers with bubbles! I'm not happy about it...but its not like I don't have anything else to do! lol! :D Right now I'm debating what to do with the rub rail. I want a polished stainless to replace the old aluminum, $150..not bad but the freaking shipping is $150 also! Everyone has to ship it as freight because of the lenght! So now I'm pondering just having the old rail powder coated to match the silver...I can do that for $50. Anyone have any suggestions? The rub rail cant be any wider than a 1/2".......

By the way they also recomend waiting that long to wax it.....you can buff it with rubbing compound the next day. Guess it just needs to breathe for a while.

Yessir, it takes a lot longer than most folks think for coatings to stop outgassing and finally cure. The liquid components in a coating are merely a vehicle for us to get solid material to flow, and it's quite a process for all that entrained liquid and trapped gasses to escape and leave only the solids behind.

whoa  that almost sounded like an intelligent thought. very unusual for me :D

You can wax it, it just needs to be a wax that allows the paint to "breathe". This is the only wax I use Presta Wax and it does not wash off like hand glazes do. I use it on every car I paint after the cut, buff and polish is done.
