Well tomorrow I'm hoping to finish cleaning up the shop and get to wiring Miss Morgan. I'm still bumfuzzeled on the rub rail...everyone wants more to ship it than it cost! I'm going to to call West Marine in T-town tomorrow to see if they will order it and have it shipped in on their normal freight shipment. If so that will save me about $150. I can just run through there on the way to the lake one weekend. I really need to get out there and do some repairs. Summer is almost here :D

I went to my local marine strore and had them order mine in. No shipping costs to me. They usually stock one or two anywho.

The problem is that other that the dealers, there aren't many "marine stores" around here. Mostly the dealers are interested in selling or servicing boats. Hopefully they can order it for me and get it without all the shipping.

Got West Marine to order the rub rail! No shipping! The bad thing is it will probably be 2 weeks before it comes in! :( Oh well I saved enough to almost pay for the depth finder!

Arch- Good news on the rubrail! I'm gonna inquire about going new myself too. What kind of depth finder are you looking at getting? A normal fish finder?

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

I'm just getting the a depth finder from Faria to match the gauges.....only thing I'm fishing for are the ladies ;) Just think of Miss Morgan as "bait", lol!

I spent 3 hours with paint stripper and the pressure washer cleaning up the shop floor.....whatever David K sprayed on the cabinets was some sticky stuff! In the morning I'm going to move Miss Morgan back into the shop and get her color sanded and buffed. Hopefully I can start on the wiring on Sunday. I also need to undercoat the fenders, and epoxy the plywood that mounts to them. I may pinstripe the fenders and put carpet on the plywood, then mount them next week! I think the trailer is done at that point! I was making a list of things I need to buy to get her done........its not very long! I hope the rubrail comes in next week.....I really want to get Max hung!

By the way, anyone have any prop suggestions? I'm thinking about starting out with a 19 and seeing what happens.

I like speed.. what is the most pitch you can use? I know somewhere in iboats there was a index for each motor and what pitch and rpms they could take. If it is to loose you could always run less throttle but if you buy a 19 and want more pitch you gotta spend more moneyfor a new prop.

Max WOT is 5500 for Max. I still need enough low end to pull skiers, but he could probably do that with a 21. I don't mind having to buy another prop later, its nice to have a backup! Nothing ruins a lake weekend like jacking up the prop and not having another one. I really don't think the top end is going to change much with the Max / Miss Morgan combo, but I could be wrong. Anyone own anything similar?

Arch,

My 15' Glastron GT150 had an Evinrude 135 and turned a 19" OMC SS prop. The lower unit gear ratio is probably different on Max, but respectfully, he's only rated @ 115 hp. I'd recommend starting with a 19". Most respectable prop shops will let you try a few different props before you buy. There are lots of options these days, but a Merc Quicksilver SS will be hard to beat for looks and performance overall.

I once bought a Merc 140, for parts, with a blown powerhead that was used on a similar boat. It had a 19" Merc QS SS prop that I had re-pitched to 17" for use on my 85 hp Merc. The 140 had a higher lower unit gear ratio than the 85.

I noticed that Ms Morgan does not yet have any transom U-bolts or a ski tow. I'll catch some flak from others, but speaking from experience, I'd recommend you install SS U-bolts and buy a tow harness you can clip on when you need it. These harnesses keep the pull point low on the boat and really work just fine. The key benefit is when you are trolling (Ms Morgan/Max as babe bait package:cool:) everything looks clean and uncluttered. A stationary pole will need to be pretty tall to get the rope up over Max. There are some poles that break down for storage (or you can create your own design).

What did you decide about ski storage?

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

I think I'm going to use a collapsible pole, otherwise I will never hear the ended of it from David K....he used to tournament ski. I'm also planning on adding two small swim platforms on the back, one for the ladder....

Haven't even thought about the ski storage, but I'm thinking of building a rack under the bow that will hold two. I figure that will be plenty, everyone I know either slalom's or is a "watcher".

The gear ratio is 2:1, and the top end only changes a mile an hour or so between the 19 and 21 on the prop calculator. We have a local prop shop that I need to go by and talk too.

I stopped by the upholstery's shop yesterday....still going to be mid-May before I get the seats back  but they should look sexy! I figure that puts me in the water for trials in about 5 weeks or so...which should work given everything else I have to get done!

I started out today by moving Miss Morgan back to the shop. It looks so much better without a paint booth to walk around / in and out of! :D

I color sanded and buffed her out above the rub rail this afternoon. My arms still feel like rubber bands from the hand buffing!

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

After buffing I started putting the dash together and thinking about wiring. Naturally the studs on the smaller gauges are too short, so I made extensions.

And because of the angled adapters, the backing plates in the back are offset from the holes to one side. They seem to work like they are, but I may make some kind of support for the side that is over the hole. I'll ponder that tonight.

I also put in the switches to the right of the steering. I figured I would put the ones that are either not used much or turned on at the beginning of the day and off at the end on that side. I put two on off switches and the bilge pump 3 way on that side. I'm guessing one will be the master radio (hot leg, not the memory leg). It seems like that one should be next to the bilge switch....since both will be fiddled with at the beginning and end of each outing. The other will either be a spare (put one in, figured I have forgotten something!) or lights

IMG_0163.jpg

My switches are as follows so far:
  1. Bilge
  2. Interior lights
  3. Running lights
  4. Radio master
  5. Horn
  6. Spare

I need to order two more "end" trims for the switches. I ordered 2 end and 4 middle pieces, not realizing I would split the switches into two banks.

The gauges are starting too look good. The empty hole is for the depth finder. I need to get that ordered too.

I also put in the fuse block tonight. I mounted it to the drivers side of the framing member that goes from the bow to the dash. I should be able to lay on the floor between the seats and access it as needed.

Its a 14 fuse bank, so I should have more than enough circuits.

dang son if you didnt have to wait on upholestery it seems like your a lot closer to splash than reality, as usual everything looks so neat and tidy, and to jack a phrase from another thread, 3 punches on your man card for hand buffing!!!!
your work impresses me everytime i check your thread, D

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Right now I am looking at the heap of wiring diagrams that I have from different parts...bilge, tach wiring harness, water temp sending unit, trim sensor, Max, gauges....I need to put together a wiring diagram! I also found a wire sizing chart, looks like almost everything will run on 18 ga wire. I need to make a run to the store tomorrow and pick up some wire, connectors, and get moving on it. I figure I can always run pig tails for the things that I don't have yet, then label them. I wish I had the steering in....I would like to see how it and all the wires are going to fit together. Hopefully the new shorter steering will be in next week.

I also started contemplating the bilge pump and fittings. My thru hull fitting is white....looks like crap on the silver. I'm going to see if I can find a stainless steel one. I guess I will pipe it out the drivers side so I can see if it is pumping.

Arch- what kind of bilge pump are you getting? I didn't even think of needing one for mine. Also- what are you running for your speedo?
