If that were only 1000 miles closer! I would buy it. I have been watching CL for awhile for the right deal within a reasonable distance. All because of your thread Arch, I love your boat and would like to build one too.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

I got a question on the paint, so I thought I would post it here for anyone who was interested in the info.

Thanks for the help, if I could pick ur brain a little more. Iv been wondering about the paint. What type of primer, paint and clear do I need. And how many coats of each did u apply on your beautiful miss Morgan.

The primer I used was a Nason high build non shrinking primer. It is a two part product, you should be able to find it at a automotive paint supply. I used that as a filler for sanding scratches and to generally smooth things out. Spray it on then wet sand it down. I actually use a the paper wrapped around a strait paint paddle for flat areas, and a stiff foam (almost rubber like) pad for curved areas. (found the pad at the paint store). Some places you just have to use your fingers! I try to avoid using my hand / fingers where I can. It just helps to get things looking nice and "strait / flat". In regards to the number of coats, I think I put 2 on the entire boat, and spot primed a few places more than that. The important thing to note is that most of it got sanded off. It goes on really thick, once I would start sanding through it I knew I was done. The idea is that you fill in the low spots (scratches and minior imperfections with it). Most of it ends up in the floor ! I also hold my body work slightly high, and knock it down during this process. I think I took it down to 400 grit and started with 80 in rough areas and 120 in others.

Right before I started to paint it I shot a sealer on it, one recommended for the paint. Then I put the base coat on right after the sealer tacked up. I used DuPont urethane automotive base clear system. The base drys in a matter of minutes. You put on the color, tape off stripe etc. You will need to get all the different colors on before you clear it. I think you have to clear it within 12 hours or it won't bond well, so have your ducks in a row! I put on two coats of color, then 2 or 3 coats of clear. You'll need to work fast on the clear, you want to maintain a "wet edge"I just work one side for a minute, change to the other side, then repeat, working from one end to the other. One other note, you need good ventilation, the clear really fogged up my booth.....a little of that was a design issue.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

Ok time for an update. I know I should be going to the lake this weekend, but I have been so buys I haven't even had time to get Miss Morgan out. I'm planning on pulling her out this weekend, cleaning her up and getting my to do list done:

  1. Install the new trim sender....I think I finally have the right one so the gauge doesn't read backwards!
  2. Remove the old seat mounting brackets and install new fiberglass brackets.
  3. I wanted to install the knob on my "motor" brace....the piece that caused all the issues last year with the trim, but I still haven't received it. I ordered it two weeks ago and they just shipped it!
  4. Reinstall the depth finder transponder, it was giving me weird readings last year.
  5. Reinstall the accent lights.....I need to figure out how to screw them in. The double sided tape worked great last year till it got hot, then they fell into the floor!
  6. Take the swim platform decks off. I would have never thought it, but the wood actually shrank last year. It had a low moisture content, but I guess it dried out even more in the sun. When it did it crack the wood some. I didn't think about it, but the mounting holes in the stainless brackets should have been slotted. So I'm going to glue up the damage, oil them and slot the mounting holes.
  7. If I have time I also want to work on building the cover for everything under the splash well. I need to put some more thought into how that is all going to work.

I'll take some pics and video, hope everyone has a great weekend!

GT.....I just had too many projects going, so the pontoon had to go on the back burner for a while. I took her up for a bath tonight....made me want to keep going and hit the lake! I should have her ready to go after the weekend. I've also been taking video of my other projects, should be posting them on youtube soon.....so you can see I haven't been slacking, lol!

Great video! Good info and I like the new production features....

Where did you get that angled fiberglass? Can think of a ton of uses for that, depending on the price (seat bases, battery boxes, gas tank fittings, and possibly even drill a few holes in for use as drainage channels against the stringers)...

By the way, Miss Morgan is a fine boat... You should be very proud! Every time I see that boat, trailer, etc... It gives me motivation to take my time and try and do mine right....

PM, thanks on the video, I stated using Powerdirector 10, I really like it....tons of features. It will even produce and upload your videos directly to youtube. I've also put up a couple of videos on my other projects.....just to prove I have really been busy!

I got the angle from Amazon, but there are a lot of sources for it. Its used a lot in industrial uses that require non-metallic structural components....you can even get i-beams. I can't believe I didn't think of it before now.

Thanks, I'm glad to have the opportunity to share the process with you guys.

I think that is the same tray Frisco used. I was going to order it, but the one they show in the catalog is all plastic....same part number, go figure. I think I actually sorted through what I'm going to do tonight. By the way I sent you a pic of the sending unit.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

Hey Evan, sorry I didn't answer your question.....it has been a whirlwind the last week, sorry I got side tracked. I really don't know, I would guess $15K or so....maybe more. You can spend whatever you want on these things or get by on a lot tighter budget. I have no plans on selling this one, so I forked out the dollars where I thought it was important. I more or less have a new boat other than a low hour motor and the original glass. I could have went with wood, but went with seacast.....or I could have went with one of the many choices of paint, but I went with the high end metallic DuPont base clear. I could have found some off the shelf seats, but went with custom seats and picked a high end upholster.....she still has short comings in my opinion, but a really nice boat. I'm know I could have spent more. Its a matter of balancing your budget and expectations. I would just start identifying cost that you can, then double them. It never comes in cheaper than you think! The best thing you can do is put in a lot of elbow grease, and take your time! Pay for it as you can, that is one thing I can say, she is %100 paid for. Let me know if you have specific questions on cost, I would be happy to help you out.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore

than you very much finnaly some one on here answer my question! i am replacing the transom, fixing the hull underneath little dings e.t.c and i want to fix the windshield since its on wood and fibreglass it to the dash and i want to put in a new dash and i would like to put in new washboards and redo the upper front of the boat past the windshield if you know what i mean and i am going to paint underneath copper the sides teal and the washbaords and deck grey and put in a new stereo and speakers 250$ and seats ( i could fin them used for dirt cheap hopefully). i figure the coast could be around 2200$ if i fibre glass overtop of wood but what would the price be to go pure fibreglass? i would like for the boat to last a long time like 10 years without rot. what could be a good way to go about doing the build of the boat? i got a 70 hp evinrude to power it,
