Sorry to hear it Bobby. I know how frustrating that can be. My boat left me trailered in Broken Bow last 4th of July. I'm sure you will get it fixed and reliable very soon.

I did some reading in my seloc manual tonight....sounds like it might be a o-ring in the rams. Seloc is a little vague (surprise!) so I'm calling Mercury's "vintage help line" tomorrow to confirm. Sounds like I just need to rebuild the rams.

Hey arch. Read your thread on Miss Morgan, excellent work!! I do have a question for you. What fiberglass mat did you use to form your inner transom skin? I have to do the same thing but was thinking 1708 mat for the strength. I have left 3" on the sides and hull fron the old inner skin to tie into. Also gonna use seacast for the core along with their spacers. Any sugesstions would be helpful. Thankyou.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

Thanks for the complement. I used 1.5 and 2.0 oz chop strand mat for all the glass work. A lot of people on here like the 1708, but I haven't used it. The mat has worked great and I haven't had any problems after 2 seasons. I built the inner skin out of I think 4 layers of mat. I cut the skin to shape then used paper tubes for my spacers (I didn't know that seacast made them when I put it in). I epoxied the skin in, then once it set up I just tabbed it in with a couple of layers of mat. I figured the seacast would be a "hurry up and get it placed before it fires off" kind of process. But it really wasn't, it had a long working time even in the summer. I would have a helper, and make sure you build a funnel to get the seacast in the transom. That was a lot of help. Let me know if you have any more questions, good luck with yours!

No problem let me know if you need anything else. I have a small update on the trim / tilt issue. I talked with Mercury today and ironed out what parts I need. I was swamped at the office, so I haven't had a chance to order them yet. Hopefully I can get that done tomorrow. Looks like I'm in dry dock again this weekend....hopefully I can get things torn down and put back together by labor day. I will say I have been impressed with Mercury, the are more than happy to help me with a motor they sold 24 years ago, that is customer service!

Good thing I ordered a pizza last night....when I went to the door not only did I get a pizza, but found a box from Mercury Marine! I love how UPS just wedged it between my door and storm door.....I never go in or out that door! Funny it doesn't look like $120 worth of parts!

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

I hadn't posted on this tread for a while since I have been busy with the new project....but this morning I realized I never updated you guys on my tilt / trim issue. I bought the parts (a bunch of really expensive o-rings and gaskets), got here in the shop and pulled out the instructions. Step 1, raise motor (no problem its more or less stuck in the up postion), step2, raise the motor lock / brace.....back the tilt off till the motor rest on the brace.....I started to raise up the lock and notice something shiny poked out the side of the motor mount bracket.

The round shaft popped out the side of the mount bracket when I went to adjust the motor rest.....it was tucked back in the hole where it wasn't that noticeable. I got to playing with it and figured out that was what was keeping the motor from going down. The retainer had come off and the shaft / motor rest had slid over and blocked the motor from dropping all the way down.

I was glad that I didn't have to rebuild the tilt trim, that is a good winter time project....but I was pissed that I missed the day hanging out with BBO and his better half on the water. I have no idea why I didn't see it at the lake....but I guess that is what I get for flying off the handle when I couldn't get it to go down. Here is what it should look like when its in the proper position (less the retainer)

Speaking of that, does anyone have a picture of the retainer? I need to find out what it is and get one this winter. I rigged it with a piece of tie wire and a washer so dad and I could go out at the end of the summer....very sexy looking :D. I actually hadn't posted about it.....kind of felt like an idiot on this one!

Hey Arch,
I hope you had a good Turkey day.
It's funny the more we learn the less we know. I wouldn't be upset, we have all done the same type thing.

That was what I was thinking Wood, it has a little knob on the end....I guess I need to hit a couple of the repair shops to see if anyone has a parts motor. Yeah I hear you Bob!

Hey ab,
Hope you and yours had a great turkey day.
My ToP has the same knob that is shown in the manual...
I would recommend you get some thing with a little more leverage on it, cause when I have to use mine, I have to reach around and grab the support brace and move it into position, because the little factory knob is about useless to get a good twist out of, and I had mine apart to check if it was siezed or rusty, NO, and I lubed the heck out if with teflon grease, and I still don't have enough leverage to twist it...
Later,

Great boat thank you for sharing. I have a question you may be able to help with. On a balsa hull is the 1/4 inch bedding as important as on a fiberglass hull? I just took the stringers out of my Baja on a balsa hull and there was no bedding at all, I was just debating if I needed it or not. Both of your projects are inspiring to say the least.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the threads, hopefully they were helpful also. I haven't worked with balsa, so I'm not sure. A pic of what you are talking about would be helpful.

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

Wow Arch, this is a very impressive piece of work. I did a full resto on a Glastron CVX 20 jet last winter. Wasn't quite to this caliber, but it's damn nice. Anyway, yesterday I picked up a 1971 Glastron CV-16 with a 150 Tower of Power strapped to the back for.... get this...... $400 with all titles!!! It's all complete except the seats, but the motor is an electrical mess. Matt linked this thread on Texas Hot Boats and I just spent all day reading it. I'm in the midst of an LS1 swap on the jet boat now, but will get to this one soon.

Matt said you were going to put together a gathering maybe at Eufaula this summer. Count me in on that one.

There's a condensed version of my build on the classic Glastron website. And yeah, even flipping a 20 footer is probably WAY harder than a 16 footer. I can't even fathom flipping a 23 footer!

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

She's has "bigger bones" than Morgan
. Funny how a lot of them almost look like they came out of the same mold....I've seen a few of the jets that look almost like her, but they are slightly different.

Thanks Blazeracer. Sorry I didn't respond sooner, I have so many projects going at the moment I haven't been on Iboats in a while. We are planning a meet up, I will keep you posted or just ask Matt. We are talking about having it at Murray, but none of us are familiar with it, we have a guy who is planning on scoping it out soon. I'll check out your thread, sounds like a cool boat for sure!

I'm hoping to get Miss Morgan out soon and tweak some things on her. I need to get something done on the boats this winter between all of the other projects I have going on!
