Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

I guess the swim platforms are going to fight all the way to the end. I would have never imagined it taking this long! Tonight I got all of the holes drilled and the rubber cut out. I cut the rubber slightly over sized, then glued it to the back of the brackets with 3M super 90, worked great!

Once I had them glued on I cut out the bolt holes with an exato knife....worked perfect.

That is about the point where I figured out I didn't buy enough bolts. I'm going with some allen head stainless, thought they would look pretty nice. I ran up to ace, but naturally they only had 2 of the 8 I needed. So I came back with the intention of putting on one of them....but I figured out that I need an extension for the allen driver that I don't have. So I guess tomorrow its off to the bolt place to pick some hardware and an extension. Hopefully after that its a mater of bolting them on.....not looking forward to dealing with the 5200, that stuff is a mess.

Ok so after weeks of screwing around with it, I finally have her butt redone! I need to put on the swim step, but I'm more worried about getting the gas tank in. I managed to come up with the right hardware and tools tonight, I'm amazed at how hard that was.....the planets must not have been aligned or something! I also finally have all the 4200 off my hands, nasty stuff. Here are a couple of shots of the final product.

I need to give her a bath really bad!

I'm glad I went with the allen head bolts, they look a lot more finished than the hex heads. Now I need to round up a few more things for the tank install and hope it goes smooth. I will also say the platforms are rock solid!

Arch,

I like the hardware, I agree that gives it a much more "finished" and "professional" look than hex head bolts. Those steps looks awesome!!!

If your not busy this summer, I could use some of that sod work in my yard!!!

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

I'll delete something, try it again. We'll tonight I finished up putting in the tank. I did a little bit of a rush job, but it is functional. I'm going to need to go back next week and tidy up the fuel supply line and vent line. Right now I have them zip tied to everything....I want to go back and clean all that up. I also don't have the fuel gauge hooked up, I need to pick up some hardware to make that happen. I'm going to take a spare tank this weekend so I don't end up stranded! Here are some shots of the install.

I started out by putting the rubber pads and tank in. I took measurements and bent at 1/8" x 1" aluminum bar to match the shape of the tank and the hold down points. They both came out great, easy to form (anything its easier than stainless!)

Next I drilled (very carefully) pilot holes for 1/4" lags in the seacast transom. Then I bolted the bracket to the transom. I love the seacast, worth the money any day in my opinion.

Next I plumed the tank and slid it into place. It was a little bit of a fight with the brackets in place.....but worked out nicely. I aligned it with the filler, the clamped and screwed it into place.

IMG_1697.jpg

I also cut the garage door rubber to lenght, slid it in and clamped everything down. The hard points worked like a champ, I wish I had done my seats that way now.

Here is a detail shot, this is going to work nicely for a point to mount the cover brackets also.

IMG_1699.jpg

Overall it went pretty smoothly, I was just pressed for time....next week I will iron out the details....now its time to get her wet!

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

Well I ended up taking an extended weekend....the wind was bad, but the boat ran great. The tank and swim platforms worked out nicely. The platforms are just above the water with full fuel, which is what I was wanting. Here is a shot of her with a full tank.

IMG_1704.jpg

The hold down points and the tank straps worked perfectly! Now I need to get the cover built and installed.

I did have one odd issue, I wasn't getting power to the fuse block that runs the stereo and a other electronics.....I'm guessing I may not have had a wire hooked up to the battery or something.....I checked a the fuses and a couple of connections...but none of the systems were critical, so I took her our anyway. I need to get the wiring in the battery area cleaned up, but was waiting to do that when I got the tank in. So that looks like the next project, along with getting the fuel gauge hooked up.

Seriously, you've done a wonderful thing here, turning a pig's ear into a silk purse. Nice work mate! :D

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

Ok call me crazy, but I found a basket case ambassador hull (short version) in west Texas for $600.....more or less in the same condition as Miss Morgan....call me crazy, but I am toying with running out there and buying her. The only drawback is it is a 4 hour trip (each way)....and it has been setting for 6 years. Tires will be trashed, who knows about the trailer bearings? I could spend more on fixing up the trailer for the trip back than the boat cost. It is also a jet drive (trashed) with an Olds 455 (ran 6 years ago, anyone want to bet if it is an anchor now?) Regardless the jet will go (sorry Matt!) and it will get a stern drive. I have toyed with a 383 stroker.....but I would need to come up with all the parts for that. Sounds like I need a donor boat. On the other hand everyone I have seen was a jet. I'm guessing I would have to fill in the keyhole and cut it back out for the stern drive. Anyone ever do that? The pump in it is a jacuzzi. I saw one that someone had cut out the bow and turned into a mid cabin once. Looked very cool....I'm tempted to take on the challenge, I need a bigger boat for the windy days on Eufaula, Miss Morgan isn't into the 3' swells, lol! It sounds like it has some crazing, but what hull that is 35 years old doesn't? The owner is going to send me some more pics....maybe when I get back from the weekend at lake tenkiller I will be more balanced and come back to my senses! Anyone want to talk some sense into me, lol! Jay, this is your fault, I have been researching gelcoat every since you used it in your ski locker....I spent an hour last night reading on "flow additives"....I need this like a hole in the head! This one here is enough for inspiration

Arch you really need another boat! Cuz Jay is nearly done and we need entertainment. Think of the little people and do it for us!

Re: 16' Nescher ski boat complete restore- SPLASHED!!

I'll try to be somewhat the voice of reason......

We'd all like to see you do another boat, and we know you'd like a Sleek. However, from the number of links to them I've seen in Vegas' thread and others, they aren't exactly super rare. So if this one is a little rougher than you'd like or not setup quite how you'd like, I'm sure you could do some more searching and find one you like better.

Heck, as badly as I wanted a Starcraft SS I did walk away from one that I went to look at despite having cash in hand because it was too rough and was missing too many parts that I felt would be difficult to fab or source. Ended up with a MUCH better one shortly thereafter.

Just a thought. We all know you don't seem to require much of a starting point in order to be able to turn out an amazing final product.

Another thing you have to think about is size. It takes alot more muscle to flip and move around a larger boat.
