lower unit oil seeping out of water intake

If it is coming out of the prop, the leak would be above the raw water pump. If its coming out the water intake its most likely the shaft seal below the water pump.

Better muffs for Alpha One drives?

what I disliked about the round muffs is there is just one source of water, either left or right side. The 8 holes on the outdrive might not allow enough volume to flow in vs the rectangle ones that send water to both sides.

    Replacement Oil Filters

There is so much to know about oil filters and we take it for granted that they are all equal. Normal filters clean 95-95% efficiency. Go with high filtration and you risk oil starvation being too restrictive. On and on. This study was helpful for me and cut thru the hype and marketing BS. I...

    Dust Cap Woes

As someone mentioned above ditch the steel caps and use rubber dust covers. I use two zip ties with locks 180 degrees apart. No water intrusion all summer.

Lower unit shaft seal (under raw water pump)

I went ahead and reinstalled the shaft seal, and water pump. The shaft play is zero because of the seal. I will pressure test once I get the upper bolted to the lower. Thanks

Lower unit shaft seal (under raw water pump)

I have a question regarding the 1995 Mercruiser Alpha one gen2 outdrive. I noticed gear oil draining out the water intake holes on the lower unit. When I replaced the raw water pump 2 winters ago, I did not change the yellow shaft seal below the pump. And of course that is where its leaking...

    Raw water pump kit differences

Alpha one Gen 2 Mercruiser. Full kits. I also have a spare impeller from another parts kit which has a metal core vs the plastic that I see on other kits. Not sure its better or worse. I will check it for iron with a magnet. Dont want anything that rusts. and fuses to the shaft.

    Raw water pump kit differences

Im looking to replace the water pump again. Ebay kits sell for $40 but mercury kits sell for $180. Assuming both are made in Chyna, is there a dimes difference between them? They look identical.

    axle repair sleeve question

It should be a tight fit. I used the permatex aviation seal stuff Just fill any grooves and stop water from getting in underneath it. These are not a permanent fix, green loctite will make replacing it a bear in the future. BTW when its time to replace it, hammer the sleeve all the way around...

Gear oil leak, but from where?

*I forgot to mention, the boat was parked on the trailer for 3 weeks so its a slow leak. I dont think the shift shaft has access to below the pump. Any leak there would not drain to the water inlet. BTW I changed the shift shaft seal and speedo connection too with the pump service.

Gear oil leak, but from where?

Thats a good thought. When I did the pump I did not replace the seal below the pump. Thats probably be where its coming from. Any other place would come out the exhaust or prop area

Gear oil leak, but from where?

I have had the boat for 3 years, 1995 Rinker 212 captiva, mercruiser alpha 1 gen 2. The first winter I replaced the sea water pump and everything went well, no problems. Last winter I removed the out drive and stored it in my garage. Bought new quick silver gasket set and reinstalled it this...

    KIA Telluride for towing?

You can buy a Toyota 4runner 4th gen V6 sport 5,000# tow limit) which has beefier brakes for under $10k 4x4. These trucks have a true frame and run forever with regular oil changes. Anything newer than 2006 is a solid choice. You can also find it with a V8 option with a higher tow capacity...

Alpha one gen II growling noise when turning

Did you ever figure this out? When you said you switched props, did you go from 3 blades to 4 or just put on a new prop of the same kind? I dont know the answer but wondering if you are hearing cavitation at the prop when turning. It can be a violent event on the prop.

Got to the lake and it would not start, need some help

Missed out on a perfect day at the lake, sunny, 90* low winds. Rinker 212 1995 350 mag mercruiser alpha gen 2 I should have started the boat at home first but just had it out 2 weeks ago and it ran great. In short, the engine cranks but wont fire at all. The entire gauge cluster is also not...

    Water flow on muffs question

Ah, those must be the two smaller holes in the Y pipe. And why the water exits there first. Thank you.

    Water flow on muffs question

Is that below the outdrive? I have not heard that term “idle relief” before. I was concerned my exhaust flaps were damaged And blocking the lower unit exhaust passage.
