I have a question regarding the 1995 Mercruiser Alpha one gen2 outdrive. I noticed gear oil draining out the water intake holes on the lower unit.
When I replaced the raw water pump 2 winters ago, I did not change the yellow shaft seal below the pump. And of course that is where its leaking. The oil is getting milky. the seal almost looks original and rubber seals are rock hard. But before I install the new seal, I checked the bearings. There seems to be too much play for bearings. I took a video of it.
=> Shaft play alpha1 gen2 If I pull up on the shaft, the play is much reduced, but still there. I assume I am pulling it up into the outer race. Is this normal? Is it easy to replace the outer race?

on a gen ii that is perfectly normal.the cut of the gears force the shaft upwards , The lower seal should be replaced at the same time the water pump is installed

I went ahead and reinstalled the shaft seal, and water pump. The shaft play is zero because of the seal. I will pressure test once I get the upper bolted to the lower. Thanks
