    89 Force 125hp L Drive Issue

Some of the jet motors do not have this hole, but replacement blocks probably do as they will fit either the outboards or jets. The flat square area to the left of the hole on the base is the bottom of the exhaust and in the outboard would go straight down the foot. With the wrong gasket this is...

    89 Force 125hp L Drive Issue

Here are some shots of the offending hole and the bas for the jet. The jet has a gasket with the hole, but a solid gasket around it, blocking the water from getting into the bottom of the exhaust. I have included a picture so that you can see how close the bottom cylinder is to where the water...

    89 Force 125hp L Drive Issue

The L drive is very similar to the Sport Jet and in that engine the cooling water travels from the pump through a hose to the exhaust manifold at the rear. In the sport jet there is a real possibility of the base leaking through the cooling water passage for the outboard version into the exhaust...

Carb leaking gas from top two holes 1989 85hp

The tip of the needle is missing and the passages need to be blown out with compressed air and then cleaned and blown out again. New needles are required and you need to make sure that they are the correct type with the "rubber" tip. Often when you order them all steel needles are sent. Those...

New Force Owner, No Start Issue

Pretty much the rpm and power is determined by the timing advance. The carbs open up very little initially, but the timing drives things. The timing of course starts at the idle setting and then increases to WOT. Will the engine start if primed with a little fuel in the carbs or with a shot of...

    timing check

The jets in the carb could easily be high altitude and this should be checked as the engine would run lean and possibly burn a piston. Also the idle screws (if I remember correctly) should start at 1 1/2 turn out and no more closed than 1 out.

New Force Owner, No Start Issue

If the engine does not spin ~300 RPM the magnetos will not reach the coming in speed and no fire. If it spins over faster with the ignition off (dead man switch pulled) then for some reason the timing might be advanced too much. What is the idle timing? it should be around 9*. 28* cranking WOT.

    Spark plug wire resistance. 75hp

These outboards usually use solid wire cores for the spark plugs.

    1989 85hp WOT only 4300rpm

I can't speak for the 85 hp outboard, but my 90 hp sport jet would turn 42-4300 rpm with one cylinder not working. The absorbed HP increases on the square with RPM so those final revs contribute more than the first. With the 17" prop perhaps is is loaded less? Of course the Sport Jet is a fixed...

    85hp Force Under powered

The colors I mentioned earlier are not for the older motors, but the later two models of the Force outboards. Yours is earlier than I have any experience with.

Me again ugh Force 120 hp now a flywheel question

Jerry, when all you can find are flywheels with the rust working it's way under the magnets you have to do something. I have had reglued magnets come loose as I was "learning" the technique, but have learned that you have to clean the magnets very well and also brighten up the flywheel surface...

    85hp Force Under powered

If you can get to a part of the wire in the stator and solder it back in it will work. The part you are talking about is the trigger coil and not the stator (I believe). The wires go to coils that are potted inside the plastic ring with the arm that goes to the timing lever. The trigger coils...

Me again ugh Force 120 hp now a flywheel question

Look for unloved 90 and 120 hp Force outboards in your area. The flywheel magnets are the same, but the hub and trigger magnets are different. The trigger magnets have never given me a problem. I buy flywheels when I can find them cheap when someone is parting put a Force (by Mercury) 90 or 120.

Check that the flywheel is in the proper position by checking to make sure that the piston is at TDC at the same time the the timing mark is at TDC (#1).

Me again ugh Force 120 hp now a flywheel question

If you check Craigslist etc you can find 1996 + motors with flywheels for less than the cost of a new one. Magnets can be epoxied in place, but you need to find an old flywheel. There is a difference in the early and late flywheels as the later ones are for the CDM ignition and the earlier are...

Me again ugh Force 120 hp now a flywheel question

You are looking at the casting numbers and that might be misleading. If the ID of the flywheel is the same then it might well work for you and any mismatch at the starter be inconsequential. You can look up the exact part # at one of the many dealers who have the parts listed on their website.
