Nautolex Vinyl on Deck - Aluminum Hull

Just as a follow-up, the Nautolex install on my deck panels is now complete. There are some pics and further details in the project thread in signature below. I ended up using the ducan Dek-Master trim adhesive, which is a contact cement. By working carefully, with a second person to assist...

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Looks like mine. I only treated the rivet heads below the waterline, so they aren't visible. I doubt the drag will be affected in any measurable way.

That's a cool set-up for sure. If I had more of a fishing focus (and didn't need to access fuel tank under splashwell), that'd be great option. I'm hoping to set up a simpler bench seat that can fold down to give maximum cargo volume behind the front seats. The bench would need to be pretty...

Here's a few better pics. Side panels extend 1" past the vertical support at console and at splashwell. The spray foam used below the shelf was not very even. To get nice vertical side panels, I had to trim as much as 1/2" off in places. The original panels must have been installed at quite...

Just figured out that leaving those edge 'flaps' of vinyl extending out into the spray rail on each side covers up my rivet location marks! Need to figure out something there, as hitting the narrow peak on one side or the other of the rib crimp requires some precision. Another topic that's come...

    1987 Starcraft islander 190v?

I'm interested to see the suggestions here, as I'm at the same point in my project. The small perimeter nails/screws on my hull were steel, and corroded badly. Are yours stainless? They look in pretty decent shape.

One last trial-fit of deck panels with vinyl installed. Waiting for rivets to arrive in the mail, and then one last vacuum, and time to rivet the deck in place. I will run a wire conduit from port to starboard side under the consoles for audio, and lighting purposes. One deck panel has taken a...

Thanks for the offer, but I think some gentle work with the ball-peen should do it. I slid a snug-fitting socket down the inside to stiffen up the tube. That helped greatly. That old antenna mast is about 8 ft long, so I have enough material for dozens of those drain tubes now!

Ouch - don't say that. This "transom replacement" project is already much more than I bargained for!

A quick update: All Nautolex vinyl is now bonded to the deck panels. I ended up doing each deck piece separately, to allow easier access in the future. I ended up using exclusively the Ducan Trim Adhesive product. Here's the basic process I followed: Center cut piece of vinyl over deck...

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

If you get those strip-lights on a roll, make sure they have the rubber coating to provide at least some moisture protection. We use these for lighting in our sugar shack (almost that season again!), running off 12V battery, and the unprotected ones fail quickly in presence of moisture. Now...

CC - that's a tank you've got there! Beautiful work. Thanks for popping in to share your thoughts.

No worries - hijack away! We are on parallel paths here. My thought as described in prev. post is that my angle on the deck would be sealed and screwed to the vinyl decking. Water on the deck would hopefully flow down the deck to the bilge hole at the back. Now if there was to be a driving...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

That shelf in my hull is riveted to the vertical member at console and splashwell, and is 'floating' between those two points. I thought at first it had a leg bent down and riveted via the rivets retaining the rub rail, but it doesn't look like it. I'm hesitant to yank that spray foam out of...

SSM - thanks for the further pics and generous offer! Will chat in PM's further. I've read numerous comments about the side panels offering structural reinforcement for the hull. I'm wondering about that aspect, as perching the plywood up on a somewhat flexible aluminum z-profile would seem to...

SSM - Thanks for those details! I cut my ply at 13" already, so looks like I guessed well. It'll sit slightly higher if I have a leg of angle underneath. I am tempted to talk to a fab shop about making up those angle pieces at the bottom of the SS panels though. They are a nice detail...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

MN - thanks for those pics. There is no sign of any of that nice aluminum trim that contacts the side panels anywhere in my project. The side panels sat right on the deck (replacements from PO) were pushed up tight against the side hull spray foam, and held there with an aluminum angle screwed...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

OK, question for any SS owners out there. The side panels - where do they end under the console? If back at the vertical member, is there a second 'kick panel' that covers the area forward of that under the console? I'm having trouble getting a nice fit with a single piece all the way from...

The side panels that were in the boat were chipboard wrapped in vinyl. They did not look original and are now long gone. The panels I've cut are currently a full 8 ft from the back of the vertical support under the splashwell to the big angle you can see under the console. The Nautolex is the...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

OK, got the rear two deck panels wrapped in vinyl. The edge folding and fiddling around the curve at the bilge hole was fiddly, but turned out OK. I left the outboard edge un-folded as mentioned previously. It needs to be trimmed back a bit so it can fit into the splashwell properly...
