Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

I must admit this whole project has been far more involved, particularly from the 'research' side of things, than I'd expected at the outset. Of course, when I started this project, I figured all that was needed was to dress up the paint and fix the transom. I looked at these empty hull build...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

I checked HD stock. There seems to be plenty of stock in cottage country: Midland, Bracebridge, and beyond. I have a buddy who's passing through Bracebridge this weekend. If my under-splashwell pieces work out OK, I'm going to have him pick up a couple more quart cans. It's something like...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

Storm Grey Nautolex arrived for the deck covering. Now - what adhesive to use... My deck is 5/8" exterior grade plywood, which has some surface imperfections. I wish I'd gone with better quality ply, perhaps Arauco or similar at least, given the time I've ended up putting into this project...

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Glad that worked out. I'm a fan of radiant heaters. Get the warmth without the draft of a fan blowing. No power outage here, but I was busy with other work for most of the day today. Will post up some Nautolex adhesive test results in my thread soon.

2021 Starcraft Splash of the Year Champion!

Congrats! It's been inspiring to read through the build threads of @Moserkr build, and all the other as well. Much to see and learn for sure!

Nautolex Vinyl on Deck - Aluminum Hull

Yes, I'm planning 3/8" ply for those panels. I plan to mount aluminum angle along the deck, set the ply panels into that, with vertical aluminum leg visible from inside (I think), and use machine screws through the aluminum, and into captured nuts in the backside of the panel. That connection...

Nautolex Vinyl on Deck - Aluminum Hull

I don't have original side panels, only the chip-board pieces the previous owner had installed. I _think_ from the looks of things the panel continues up under the helm. The idea of protecting that gap is as much for the rest of the construction process as anything else. I know once...

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

I bought a couple of those infrared heaters from PrincessAuto when they were on for $40. They work quite nicely. I had them set under the hull to warm it while I was doing some of the seam sealing. From a 3 ft distance, the aluminum would get just warm to the touch, while air temp was single...

    198x SS-150 rebuild

Wow, I missed out on this thread earlier. Nice boat, and VERY nice wiring diagram! I'm a newbie here, so will be following along to see how the responses apply to my project.

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

Greetings Venca! Thanks for dropping by. I'm glad to see they made more than one of these boats! Mine's got a Yamaha 60 4-stroker on it, and it performs very nicely with that setup. I'd love to see some higher resolution pictures of yours sometime. Was there any factory markings/logo/brand...

Nautolex Vinyl on Deck - Aluminum Hull

OK, if I still have some ears listening to this thread... I think I've settled on applying the vinyl to each ply deck panel separately. I'm wondering about wrapping the vinyl under and stapling along the fore and aft edges, but leaving a couple inches running wild past the ply on the port and...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

I re-worked the foam panels under the deck to increase the foam fill percentage a bit, up over 10 ft^3 of foam now. I managed to get a form-fitted third piece of 2" foam in the middle section, while still leaving enough space for water to flow over the rib if needed. I also had to trim a bit...

Nautolex Vinyl on Deck - Aluminum Hull

I have picked up a few things there, but would rather go to JT's directly to be honest. I wasn't aware they were down to 3 days/wk though. Thanks for the heads-up on that! I did see they now charge a 'pick-up' fee, which I thought was a bit sketchy.

Nautolex Vinyl on Deck - Aluminum Hull

Yes, I suppose you're right. Like I said - I'm an expert at over-thinking things. Just trying to plan ahead is all... Now I need to get Nautolex ordered. I've found JT's Outdoor Fabrics in Barrie - $39/yard. Not sure of any other suppliers in the area.

Nautolex Vinyl on Deck - Aluminum Hull

MN - thanks yet again for those pics! I keep going back to look at other details. I was wondering just now about how to handle the rub relief cutouts as you approach the bow. Looks like you folded the Nautolex back on itself in those areas and just let them ride up on the rib itself? Seems...

Nautolex Vinyl on Deck - Aluminum Hull

After all that scraping, scrubbing, sanding, pressure washing, and vacuuming...it just seems so wrong! SSM - you and MN are right, that crap should end up eventually in the bilge. I did spend some time making sure those limber hole areas were clear. Many of them had old rafter tails from the...

Nautolex Vinyl on Deck - Aluminum Hull

a.) different versions are available - zinc, or some black chromate (I think?) I have from an aircraft application. That's actually where I got the idea, as they are commonly riveted to aluminum structure in aircraft. b.) I suppose it's possible, but the 'good' ones I have are crimped slightly...

Nautolex Vinyl on Deck - Aluminum Hull

Thanks, those pics are awesome! Now about the drilling and aligning holes... If you use rivets, you drill through deck plywood and then through stringer. Those shavings fall down into hull. Don't you pull up the deck after to clean that crap out so it doesn't plug things up? If the deck is...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

OK, I got a couple hours in on the boat project today. The three main deck pieces are complete. What remains is the short piece under the splashwell. They have all received multiple coats of the Old Timer's Formula, allowed to dry for a week, and got their first coat of oil-based paint today...

Nautolex Vinyl on Deck - Aluminum Hull

OK, I've been mulling this over, and am leaning towards wrapping the ply panels separately, and then fastening to the floor. Here's a couple more questions to throw out there: 1.) Has anyone fastened nutplates under the stringers, and used machine screws to fasten the deck in place, rather...
