    Ok, so the test that begins on page 6A-27 Boost Cylinder Test does not apply to the new style cylinder and there is no similar test for the new style. If it passes the pump pressure tests then the cylinder is considered to be good and doesn't need replacing?

    Sounds like old impeller vanes in the coolers blocking the flow. Not sure how it could be one direction only, but there it is.

    Ok, with the clevis pins removed the drive swings freely from side to side, the pump pressures test good, the valve moves in and out manually ( I push and pull on the cable housing, so my fingers are out of the way) and the ram extends and retracts, and with the pin back in it swings the drive...

    Yeah, I understand all that, and I know you can't repair it, nor would I even want to, I'll just swap it out for another unit. But when you get to the testing and troubleshooting section of the power steering system, there is a section to test the old cylinder to rule out that being the failure...

    I have the Mercruiser Service Manual #14 for sterndrives, but the instructions for the booster cylinder test are for the old style, nothing for the new style. There are instructions for other tests on the new style but they don't include the booster test for the new one, unless I'm missing...

    You can get the gimbal ring out without pulling the motor. There are two kits available for this. One of them is https://www.jrmarine.com/videos.htm I'm not sure if you can convert from needle bearing to bushing, but it would be easier to get repaired if you remove the ring.

    What color is the wire that attaches to the distributor housing? Maybe they all don't have that wire, don't know.
