All the above and be courteous... learn to back up your trailer in a parking lot, not at the busy time at the launch ramp !! Backing up a trailer is not that hard, I taught all my kids in order to get there drivers license. With proper instruction, you will have it down pat in 30 min or less.

Also: Getting the Boat Ready for Launch prior to getting on the Ramp, and to get the Hell off of it, before tarping, after loading.
In addition, keep your little Monsters off the Ramp, as it not a Wading Pond.

The ONLY problem is finding the time AND having the weather cooperate. We only go out when all the other idiots are home reading facebook. Thus we have many opportunities, but all too often there are gale force winds or its raining.

Generally, in my opinion, the biggest problem in boating is "you." Knowing why you boat, knowing how much money you're willing to spend, what you're willing to learn and do, what you intend to put up with, etc.

Owning a boat requirers effort and money; how much of either is up to you. Being on the water generally means we're trying to enjoy ourselves and spend time with friends and family, so we have to put up with other operators and such to do that. Gettin' wound up with everyone else ruins your time with what you want to do and who you want to do it with.

What you want, and what you're willing to do and how much you can spend on it are probably the biggest problems with boating.

Dealer said.-----" Marine engines have gotten to complicated "-----Small shops in remote areas no longer have the expertise to do repairs.------Boat owner said " I have this $100,000 boat and motor and few shops know how or want to fix it "

inflation , the cost of boating is getting stupid .
the " bust out another thousand (BOAT) " saying is now no longer relevant.
not much can be done to your boat for a $1000 bucks these days.

First, welcome aboard

the biggest problem in boating is generally new boaters jumping into a boat too far above their abilities and budget and not getting proper boating education.

the second biggest problem is usually the loose nut behind the wheel not understanding the maritime rules and regulations and not being courteous on the water

Lack of basic knowledge
Lack of training & practicing skills; it’s not like driving where you can practice all the time
People buying old boats & don’t really realize the pitfalls (wood rot; obsolete drive trains & NLA parts, mechanics won’t work on old stuff).
Limited # of skilled mechanics & fiberglass shops
The nuisance of trailering

I think hot rods/classic cars will be my next hobby.

Was at a meet yesterday.----Old ( good condition ) wooden boats in the building along with 2 JAGUAR cars.-----A 4 seat E-type ??/-----And one that appeared to be from the " late 30's early 40's " and had the movie star look about it.----First thought it was a Bently.-----Best of both worlds I would say .----Old cars and boats.

I bought a tinny with a 9.5 HP outboard. It was small, but it was big enough to enjoy vacations with 2 fat adults and 2 pre-teenage boys. I paid $600. The motor had just been reconditioned with a tune up, impeller, etc. I rebuilt the trailer and painted it with rustoleum for another 100 bucks. A traveling cover another 60 bucks.

Since owning it I put another 100 bucks in the motor and another 100 bucks for trailer tires. Annual maintenance for grease, plugs and winterizing too small to itemize. We never used more than 3-4 gallons of gas for an outing, and no more than 20 gallons on a week-long vacation. The Homeowners insurance covered liability, so no cost there.

Those are the total costs since we bought the rig in 1986.

How can you put a price on the memories we gained in the past 37 years. We only spent pocket change, yet our return was simply priceless. One of the best investments I ever made.

If you NEED an I/O, and you NEED 50 mph, and you NEED to take a dozen people with you, then you NEED to spend big bucks, now and again every year. If you want a family value, it can be done for literally pennies.
