    Stalls running at idle speed

Do you have a HD soldering iron or gun? That cap is held in place by epoxy, and if you're VERY careful heating the hell out of it, it will release, allowing the cap to be pulled straight off. Do not attempt to pull at any sort of an angle, or attempt to pry. That's a guaranteed way to break the...

    Stalls running at idle speed

Here's the sort of diagram I'm talking about. See #4 https://www.boats.net/catalog/honda/outboard/20hp/bf20d4-lrta-vin-bamj-1100001-to-bamj-1199999/carburetor-auto

    Stalls running at idle speed

I'd like to be more help, but I'm not familiar enough with that carb. My stomping ground is on the 35-90 hp Honda's. Hopefully somebody more familiar with be able to give you a hand. Too, often parts diagrams can be helpful with that kind of question....

    Stalls running at idle speed

"I removed the carb, soaked it, sprayed it out with carb cleaner, replaced the rubber seal between the two halves" That's a nice start, but it's hardly what I would call a thorough cleaning. A thorough cleaning is about a compete tear down and careful inspection. Does this carb use a small...

    Honda BF50a milky oil…did I buy a bad motor

That right there could be the root of your evil (1 1/2 turns). Mine are generally sent out with 2.5 - 3 turns. This makes for a MUCH friendlier handling engine that's far less picky about starting or idling when it's cold. And there's no downside to keeping them slightly rich like that I've...

    Stalls running at idle speed

If I were being allowed a bet here, it would be that you missed some dirt when you cleaned the carb. If that were the case, it wouldn't be the first time that's happened. I've cleaned literally hundreds of Honda carbs, and on occasion, will still have one bite me in the butt that will need to...

    Honda BF50a milky oil…did I buy a bad motor

Note that the choke solenoid position is adjustable (by loosening the band that hold it in place). If that solenoid is installed too far towards the rear, it can't possibly pull the choke open all the way......

    Honda BF50a milky oil…did I buy a bad motor

Re: hard start, you say the "choke is working", but is it? You've verified the choke plates are closing completely? Does it start any easier using the manual choke? That motor should be running within seconds of the time you hit the starter - assuming only the compression is normal (something...

    Honda BF50a milky oil…did I buy a bad motor

Nobody working on that type lower (Merc is the same) will try to get that nut free on an older salt water lower. Instead, you drill through it in 2 places near the bottom about 1/2" apart. Then you give that 1/2 section a good whack with a center punch, breaking it right out of that ring. From...

    Engine weight

Hate to sound like a parrot, but working with a 16' boat, it's pretty hard to compare similarly rated 2 stroke performance with 4 stroke performance when you have a 250 lb motor in one hand and a 400 lb motor in the other. That's not going to work out well until you get into a larger boat, where...

    Honda BF50a milky oil…did I buy a bad motor

Anything is possible, but IMHO, no chance in hell... With a t-stat installed, if run long enough, it COULD burn off some of the water in that oil, forming steam that would then vent out. If you haven't already, maybe give the motor a fresh oil and filter change and then see how long it takes...

    Honda BF50a milky oil…did I buy a bad motor

I'd say go for it Noah. Replace the flywheel, if for no other reason than to convince yourself that's not an issue. Eventually though, you're going to have to figure out the cause of the milky oil.....

    My winter cover solution

So jealous. One of my boats is kept in a carport in Florida. Because of the huge layer of green pollen we get there every year, I keep it covered with a dust cover, and even with one end of the cover left open, mildew is a huge issue! No rest for the wicked....

Points? Elec. shift? OH NO!!! If a 50hp 4stroke was out of the question for whatever reason, It would likely a low time 85hp Johnnyrude here...... :^)

Properly propped, 4 stroke acceleration isn't something most will ever be sorry about/find lacking. They're torque monsters.... Picking out the right one is WAY more likely going to be about weight on the smaller boats.....

That and the fact about any motor you look at will be whisper quiet as compared the the one you have.... Unless this boat has a really wide or deep transom, there is no way I would bolt 360lbs to the back of it. Find a lighter option or a different hull.

    My winter cover solution

Not to take away from your find, but a decently done shrink wrap cover, that's carefully removed and stored, can be reused for 3-4 years. I'm on #3 cover this season for our 24' pontoon stored here in SE MI, not because of how tatered the #2 cover has become, but 'cuz I just don't trust it. It...
