    Is it a 283 or 307 ?

Boat is 1970 Penn Yan Model TUE 17R / ser. W59674 / 210 hp Casting number 3862194 which is a 283 block. Last made 1967 Engine code V030I3BB. I can't find the suffix listed anywhere, V indicates Flint plant which started production in 68, which matches the OMC model year. Could this be a 283...

Hull balsa core rotten, what next?

Thanks for the tips, Being a 52 year old boat, I'm not expecting to be splash ready. Looking under the deck, I can see the floor and stringers have been replaced before. No guarantee what was missed. I really think she's in better shape than what I have. Just realized, 20 years in pole barn...

Hull balsa core rotten, what next?

A note that made the decision easier. Been looking at a 1970 23ft Penn Yan with same engine and outdrive. She's been in a pole barn the last 10 years. He won't let me drill holes but I went over it with a small hammer and sounds solid. Don't care about engine. Have 2 in the shed with outdrives...

Hull balsa core rotten, what next?

Thanks for the comments, She's a 1972 Starfire 240HT. Yes, the core of the hull concerns me the most. In this picture of it on the trailer, you can see the hull bowing at the rear bunk. I think this is too much for me. Tearing out the whole inside skin and replacing wood then reglassing is too...

Hull balsa core rotten, what next?

This is a 24ft cuddy cabin with OMC stringer mount electric shift. I started by cutting the rotten mounts out, then found bad starboard stringer, then standing on inside skin of hull heard crackling sound and saw movement. Cut inside skin away and found almost all of end grain wood gone from...

    Push/pull vs Tru course steering

The cable came from a foot longer boat. I have a complete drive & intermediate housing that was Tru course from a previous salvage. Will either choice " feel " better ? Will the Tru course just make more possible places for leaks? And no other benefits?

    Push/pull vs Tru course steering

Just got a 1970 Penn Yan 23ft with SBC 350 and OMC electric shift. It has a push/pull steering. I also have the necessary parts (from helm to worm gear ) to convert it to Tru course. (from old project) Is there a preference between the 2 systems? Or should I just leave what works be? I'm...

    88 Capri Restoration (Splashed 08/2022)

Have you tried setting the carb float lower and checking the seat? I would do that before spending a couple hundred on a new pump. Can't see how the pump would have too much pressure. When they go bad, you lose pressure. Usually from bad diaphragm. If it truly has too much, try stacking 3 or...

    88 Capri Restoration (Splashed 08/2022)

There's a truck saying; "Old Fords never die, you just have to keep learning how to drive them " and "they run better without oil pressure "

2.00 ratio Alpha one gen 2

And our 3.0 were never in an automotive application. The Iron Duke is a 2.5 L / 151CI 90hp . Intake and exaust on opposite sides of head. Our 2.5 L is 153CI 120hp. Intake and exaust same side and the closest auto use was only the 1963 Chevy ll. Pre Nova. ("Pre " pun on purpose 😉) Had to kick a...

Short shaft kicker for 20 inch transom

Yes, that picture is backward to my plan. I would have L main and S kicker on transom corner with drop down bracket like the Garrelic. I'll install second helm controls for the kicker. You think I won't be able to raise the auxiliary when using the main with this type of bar? If both were L...

Short shaft kicker for 20 inch transom

Here's a picture of what type of setup I'm thinking of. My transom is similar, as there's no way to reach tiller controls. Will this type of steering link allow the kicker to be raised out of the water when not in use? And still use the main.

    Bilge drain tube suggestions

Got it, I'll use whatever metal that was used before. Guess it was good enough to last almost 40 years. And no need for the sealer. Thanks again for your help. Didn't want to tear into it without a plan.

    Bilge drain tube suggestions

Are any of those easier to use. Do any of them work better than the other? I assume 5200 is the sealer to use?

Short shaft kicker for 20 inch transom

Boat is a 21.5 fiberglass cuddy with a 150 Johnson. I'm looking at a late 80's 15 hp mercury Short shaft as a kicker for trolling. I measured 20 inches from transom top to bottom, next to the 150 where it will mount. There doesn't seem to be a lot of room in the splashwell area, I'm thinking...

    Bilge drain tube suggestions

I'm wanting to replace the bilge drain tube in a 85' fiberglass transom that's holding a 150 Johnson. My thought is a brass one. (Don't mind buying the crimp tool) it has a metal one now. Is there a better choice? Any tips?

    Spare Stern Drive

A quick way to tell the difference in lowers is to measure across the bottom hub. Older inline = 3.75 inches V6-V8 & newer 3L = 4.25 King Cobra obviously bigger at 5.75
