Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

I used a label maker wrapped around the wire end. Haven't had the labels fall off yet. You can add some clear packing tape over it if you want to make sure it stays. Since its underneath and out of the sun, no UV concerns. SHSU

    198x SS-150 rebuild

That is a detailed plan you have. Each of us have our own ways of doing things, but in the end its your project and must be happy with it. That being said, see comments below: Dual Batteries: I use our boat in a similar fashion as far as fishing and family. I have a house bank and an engine...

If you can, suggest using medical syringe. Makes it a lot easier to control measuring then a measuring spoon. Also, works well use as an applicator on the seem edges. SHSU

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

Which pedestals did you go with? I tried to cut mine down, but found out that the top had a minuscule tapper. Got it to work eventually, but wasn't as clean cut as I had hoped. SHSU

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Personally I would use a wire wheel to clean the the pitting, and then wipe it down before using Marine Tex or JB Weld. If original paint still has good bond, then no need to mess with it. Ya, no need to put G flex on the exterior heads of those. If you could get it between where the plates...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

How are you going to use the boat? Fishing, cruising, tubing? If for fishing, then I would test trying to hold rods or getting to rods across the boat with that setup. I did a single center swivel seat in the back which allows me to comfortably get to rods on both sides of the boat without...

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Took some digging, but here is an Interlux product that I think fits the bill: https://www.interlux.com/en/us/boat-paint/antifouling/vc-performance-epoxy That being said, I don't think the original Starcraft paint was anything special. A lot of guys have used Tractor Paint with hardener. I...

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Any reason why you are trying to use Sherwin Williams or such for the epoxy? I only ask as they aren't who I would think of for marine bottom paint. As @classiccat mentioned, Interlux is a big brand in the Marine environment. That being said, I have only used Fasco Epoxy and have been...

You are correct that isn't that standard transom. I thought the oversized splashwell was a waste of space. I modified it so that I could fit two livewells, one on each side. Also I have no issues climbing or jumping around on it, where I always had concern with the original. SHSU

As I don't store my boat in the water for extended period of time, take my suggestions as such. They do make antifoul specific for aluminum boats. That being said, since you are going to be in fresh water, I wouldn't worry to much about antifoul. You aren't trying to combat clams or oysters...

Those wood screws should be thru bolts. See below pic of my SS16: You can just make out the nuts I used and it was all SS. As @g0nef1sshn showed, I used backers as well to prevent pull thru. SHSU

+1 for nail or screw in hole. I also add a couple layers of tape on top as well. Keeps it sealed and have had no issues keeping tubes for months. Now fast cure is a different story. That one I never could get to store well. SHSU

I would agree that G-Flex/Gluvit it closer to the original sealant then 5200. That being said, 5200 is a great sealer too. I have used many a tube on my project and will continue to do so when needed. SHSU

A little heat can be used to help "Soften" it but would use as a last resort. Other option is to use a wire wheel on an angle grinder. Will create a mess, but you will be able to control the removal. SHSU

    Flooring question

+1 for forstner bit I used epoxy so was able to back fill with it. That being said that is a lot of JB weld. Might be able to use Tightbond III mixed with Sawdust to create a filler instead. SHSU

I used the syringe method for the seam. Also make sure to do it in batches. That way you aren't scrambling to do everything in one go. SHSU

    1976 22' SUS O/B "Hydration Break"

I used a wire wheel to help remove paint around rivets and such. Otherwise a paint stripper and elbow grease will do the trick too. SHSU
