    25HP Idles Low in Neutral

its idle speed in forward gear that matters. to adjust there should be a screw on the port side just under the flywheel infront of exhaust cover. these never rev up high in neutral. make sure throttle butterfly is exactly horizontal at WOT, and cam roller just starts to open said butterfly when...

1989 Evinrude 88 SPL (E88MSLCER) Exhaust Housing Leaking???

these can develop an air bubble in the t stat housing, keeping the t stats closed or barely seated and not fully open. there is a notch to be made in the poppet valves to stop this happening. get it in the water and let it warm up to atleast 125f and rev it up with a quick blast... should clear...

Add telltale pee hole to 1965 Johnson 75 HP

not much to add, but your comment about not knowing if the hot light works before it overheats is not true. simply ground out the switch at the motor with the key to ON and see if it works. ditto for testing your fancy new buzzer:) looks like you boat in fresh water. overheats are EXTREMELY rare...

2001 50hp Johnson VRO Pump Values

to verify the pump is functional, just take the fuel out hose off the top and turn the motor over. it should spew fuel out. if its piddly or nothing is happening, time to rebuild or take it out entirely, 1/8npt grub screw in crank case for vacuum line, and screw a new non-oms pump into the side...

Mercury Gen 1 cables to OMC possible?

I have a new - to - me race boat and installed a XP100 Evinrude. Boat is rigged for gen 1 merc shift/throttle cables. Does anyone make an adapter to use those cables on a 1979-up OMC? I see 33c cables do have an adapter, but can't find one for the gen 1 quicksilver cables. these cables have that...

2000 Johnson 200 Ocean Pro - Out Of Ideas... Please Help

I use a $70 borescope as a 1st check with low compression/idling issues. takes me 5 min tops and all i had to do was unscrew the spark plugs and push a button. get a replacement powerhead if rebuilding it is out of the question. you need to set the rod caps correctly when rebuilding, and i dont...

Johnson 1988 vro 225 hp fixing up a Frankenstein

yes the only check valves are in your pic for intake manifold. get a piece of hose and try to blow in to all of em. or a syringe with booze in it. any amount means must be replaced. the only other check valve feeds the top bearing from bottom of crankcase, and its the big grey plastic one.

Looking at a Johnson 120hp, what to look for?

120hp is 364 lbs. basically same as a V6 60 degree eagle motor, which really puts things into perspective hehe. have a DT150 Suzuki that weighs as much as a 2.7/3.0 looper at 450lbs. but to be fair the suzuki is a 2.7.

Looking at a Johnson 120hp, what to look for?

where are you located? the difference between the weight of a 3cyl 50-75hp motor and a v4 looper is right around 140 lbs, not 300.

1986 90 hp johnson idle and ramp up issue

check the 4 check valves on intake manifold. they should only flow out, not in. just get a piece of 1/8 hose and blow into each one. any air escaping back into the intake they must be replaced. does it smoke and load up excessively when applying generous throttle? if the block got hot enough to...

1986 90 hp johnson idle and ramp up issue

besides testing compression, when where the carbs last serviced? i've had these old crossflows do something similar when the idle circuit was covered in sticky old fuel... of course fresh 93 octane is a must for these

    1993 Evinrude 70hp Powerhead Compatibility

there is nothing incompatible, but could be different as far as ignition and porting. i believe i have an oval port motor that started in 1993, but most folks say 1994. do you have the quickstart power pack or the small rectangle one with the small rectifier? again no issues with bolting up...

I cant get this throttle set up properly. Please advise.

oh my mistake i thought i read you had the idle stop screw turned all the way in? if your talking about the thumbwheel (making the throttle cable as long as it will go at idle), thats not right either. obviously at WOT the WOT stop screw need to be adjusted to make sure throttle plates are...

    1997 50HP 3cyl coil test question

sounds like you got it sorted, but just thought i'd remind that SLOW ("limp overheat") mode kicks in around 2800 on that motor. not your issue im sure, but good idea to check head temp at idle. 125-152.5 degrees at 900rpm at top of head.

I cant get this throttle set up properly. Please advise.

one thing i didn't see discussed is to properly make sure the idle stop screw stays put, is to do like the OEM manual says: shift to FORWARD DETENT and half back to neutral (still in FWD, right?) pull firmly on throttle cable, adjusting thumbwheel as needed and seat into trunnion. shift neutral...
