Been a while since we've had an oil thread

2011 test was Delo 400 straight 30 2015 was Merc conventional 25/40 2021 and 2022 was Merc syn blend 25/40 2023 and 2024 was Merc syn blend 25/50 you can see my HGs started seeping in water as shown by the sodium levels from salt water (but never showed on the dipstick or in the used oil at all)...

Been a while since we've had an oil thread

I read that too and found it interesting. When I used Delo 400 straight 30 it also sheared a bit but the three varieties of the Merc oil (conventional 25/40, syn blend 25/40, syn blend 25/50) did not and this was over many years not just one test of each. This 4.3 had the roller cam from the...

Been a while since we've had an oil thread

I've said it before and I'll repeat: do your own research by doing oil analyses you will know for sure if that oil is good enough I have and I can say the Merc oil definitely stays in grade, consistently. Not saying others don't. The price of the Merc/Quicksilver oil has really gone up, so I am...

    5.0LX surging/stumbling

They might, or you can just take em to the hardware store and get em matched up to something a bit longer. You might see those bolts on www.quadrajetparts.com take a look I think I used Cliff's gasket and my OEM bolts were long enough. Glad you got a good outcome! the QJet is a great carb IF...

    Boat covers like Seal Skin

here's an old pic of what I set up on my Four Winns to support the cover for snow, some years we get nothing some years we get a lot. I have since added to it lol. Just got a new cover, the Taylor Made cover I bought in 2007 is finally falling apart. The back part of the piece of wood is hinged...

Fuel leaking out of the throttle (butterfly) shaft

I had the same thing on my Quadrajet about 15 years ago, it turned out to be the needle valve for the float, probably deteriorated by E10 gas. Ever since replacing it I have not had that problem again. About the throttle shafts, I researched this as well and apparently on the Q-Jet it can be a...

    Milky oil

True, what I found: battery on, ignition off, the fuse box positive feed had battery voltage, and the B terminal on the ignition switch had battery voltage when I turned the ignition on, it would drop by about 1.5 volts, both at the switch and at the fuse box. I tried troubleshooting both the...

    Milky oil

Fun you get to make winter fun. We don’t get enough snow here to do that! I have to do some upholstery work in my old boat over the winter, plus Jeep repairs etc.

    Milky oil

I had this & thought the gauge was bad but it wasn’t. There was resistance in the circuit that feeds battery power to the fuse box. I wound up running a supplemental power lead to the fuse box instead of pulling the harness apart.

    Milky oil

The voltage comes to the dashboard wiring via the B terminal on the ignition switch then branches off to the individual gauges, check battery voltage at the B terminal with the ignition on. Is it the same as the gauge or higher like true battery voltage? It could be resistance in the wiring to...

    5.0LX surging/stumbling

Cliff's parts are good, I have used them and also parts from Quadrajetparts.com Cliff has warned many times, do not buy a reman Qjet from these on line retailers, they are often Franken-carbs that are cobbled together from a number of parts bins and rarely if ever are calibrated for your...

    Intake manifold, 350 GM

Pick up one they are heavy cast iron. Mine has had salt water running inside it (raw water cooling) for at least 25 years and it hasn’t rusted through yet!!!

    Servicing my trailer bearings

If water doesn’t get in and the trailer isn’t overloaded then they just don’t fail like that! I have 3 jeeps all used off road too and they have from 136,000-186,000 miles and I have not had to replace any of the front unit bearings in them! If you are a frequent trailer boater I would at least...

    Intake manifold, 350 GM

Is it MPI or a carb? Carb cast iron Vortec intakes can be bought new for a lot less than 1200! If all it has is external rust just wire brush it, clean with acetone and coat with rust converter and then paint. The cast iron is very thick & not likely to rust thru.

    Servicing my trailer bearings

Hello All…I’m old enough to have had cars with the old style bearings that were exactly like trailer bearings. GM, Ford & Chrysler all recommended a bearing repack at 36 months or 36,000 miles and you usually did a brake job at the same time. I did these on air cooled VWs, Fords, Chevrolets etc...

    Getting rid of the relays

Painless wiring sells or used to sell relay bases with rubber insulation/water proofing pads, I’ll have to look at their site to see if they still sell them. https://painlessperformance.com/product/weatherproof-relay-base-seal-terminal-35-amp-part-no-80129/
