    Proper Manual ? ?

Did they print these annually ? Should I look for an earlier printing to all of the specifics for my 1989 motor ? Thanks a bunch !

Hi Folks. Is this the proper comprehensive manual to cover a 1989 J40 VRO ? Says its 200 pages. I'm lookin to maybe buy it. Thanks for guidance, W

    Trim / Tilt

A local has this, thinks it is mid 70's model. Do any of you know if the T&T/pivot bracket assy will work on my 1989 J40 ? I might be able to get this at a reasonable price. Thanks

    Trim / Tilt

That is exactly the way the stock tt is on my J60. But the CMC has only 1 cylinder with 1 ram. Something has to sense when it is slow or stopped and when under way. Could be a small internal bleed port at the 20 degree mark ? dunno ? Thanks again.

    Trim / Tilt

Case I didn't mention it, this 40 was on a CMC unit and is missing the original assist assembly. Not sure if you were aware of that, Thanks

    Trim / Tilt

One more question: I read where the typical hyd TT units have a relief valve built in to allow somewhat of a tilt UP in the event of a UWO collision. Looking at the CMC manual, I see this (pic) but no mention of how it is regulated or accomplished. I can imagine an internal pressure sensitive...

    Trim / Tilt

Thanks BC, much appreciated. That IS what I wanted to hear ! They actually were quite effective. I'm sort of in a financial pickle. Used TT units $$$$ if available, and work. CMC $$$$$$ Used + rebuild , More $$$$ I'd be happy if I could get something to work manually for now. I have a 60 w/TT...

    Trim / Tilt

From what I have gathered, the "assist" models from Johnson did not last very well but I have not found a report regarding how well they actually worked as new ..... when they first came out. Merc units look very similar and I assume they operated the same way. Were they shunned due to being non...

    Trim / Tilt

Hey thanks ! That is sort of what I was guessing. Been reading info regarding the degree of protection and it appears to be minimal. Especially at speed. Thanks again, W

    Trim / Tilt

Hey friends. I mostly have experience with smaller outboards that swing up if you hit an obstruction while in fwd gear and "latch" to prevent tilting up when in reverse. On larger motors with electric T&T, is the motor hydraulically locked when in fwd where it can't tip up if hit ? then somehow...

    Help with FrankenJohnson Pivot/Stern mounting

Hmmmm, stumbled across mention of a Tilt Assist cylinder. Followed that lead to a vast amount of info. Pretty well explained all I need to know .... for now, anyway. Might have to change plans for the CMC. Was going to maybe sell it. Carry on folks, I got this one :) (y)

    Shift rod bent ?

OK, turns out it does need the slight bend to parallel the driveshaft up to the powerhead and connection point. Thanks

    Help with FrankenJohnson Pivot/Stern mounting

Hi folks, hope some of you Johnson gurus can help me. Something appears to be changed, swapped and/or missing. Sticker says J40ELCEC. It was mounted on a CMC T&T kit which will be used elsewhere. This motor will go back on as manual t & t. This bracket has the 2 position padded flip stop for...

    Shift rod bent ?

Its all back together now. The slight bent is just below the seal and looks like it needs to be there to bring the rod up parallel to the drive shaft. Slightly bent near the red circle. Thanks.

    Shift rod bent ?

J40ELCEC 40 HP Johnson 1989 The shift rod has a bend in it near where it goes through the seal at the lower unit. Doesn't look proper. Should it be perfectly straight ? Hard to tell from the exploded view in the parts diagram. Maybe got bent by someone servicing/impeller ? ? ? Thanks for some...

    Signs of bad pour foam

Thanks Froggy ! This is the mixer type recommended. (pic) Amazing, the variations recommended by various folks selling this pour foam. Use mixer, don't use mixer. example: AeroMarine FAQs Q. Do I need a drill to mix the 2# foam? No! Don’t use a drill because it ruins the foam’s ability to cure...

    Signs of bad pour foam

Can't get much fresher than that ! My guy recommends mixing with a drill and small paddle mixer instead of a stick for more complete mixing. I have some mixers coming, but am wondering how to clean the mixer between batches. I'll be pouring multiple cavities with continuous small batch mixing...
