Reread the response from the fire chief. It wasn't a propane bottle. It was one of those bic lighters you use to light charcoal or propane grills. It was set next to the fire and heated up and exploded.

Sure it was, it wasn't a Bic style lighter. The bottle had an adapter that made it into a torch(didn't know you could do that), they used it to light the grill and then set the bottle on the grill shelf where it got hot and went kaboom.......

Do the green bottles say something like, "Do not refill", "Not made for refilling"? Or something along those lines? I only use 20# so I don't really know, I just assumed........

Makes me wonder what would happen at crush depth on these.... They would make lovely little depth charges if rigged correctly! ;)

The one I have in front of me says the following:

Never refill this cylinder. Refilling may cause explosion. Federal law prohibits transportation if refilled. Penalty up to $500,000 and 5 years imprisonment.(49 U.S.C.5124)

Chief Rigo Landeros of the Fillmore Fire Department responded to the scene and explained what he believed happened.

“They lit the charcoal barbeque with the device. They set it on the side of the barbeque,

Charcoal? No need for propane other then a lighter to light the starter fluid
Who said they used it to light starter fluid?

My friend has a BBQ that has a built in propane burner to light the charcoal. Its done more often that you think.

Yep. That style grill is popular. I know Webber makes them and they are nice. The propane burner is underneath and lights the charcoal or you can use it as a gas grill if your out of coal. My Aunt and uncle had one right before they moved away... I'm the cheap kind of grill guy, and use a $80 Kingsford charcoal grill which still has an adjstable grate and a charcoal chimney lighter..

If you light a grill with a torch, it's best that it is not left near the heat source..

Built in? Would like to see him set it along side on the shelf like the story tells it

So you agree now it was a propane torch? I was still thinking you thought it was a Bic lighter. :)

No.
Bic Lighter is a brand name for the butane lighters as are others. This is most likely the issue. As i said so did the fireman. Just a bad use of words to describe the same thing

I am not sure about the green tanks but we used the cheap long blue ones in the injection molding industry. Each operator used a propane torch to burn plastic on the molds. Those little tanks were refilled over and over and over in the plant. We refilled them from a 20# cylinder in a designated area. Went through several OSHA inspections without a hitch.

Curious how an OSHA inspector would know you had refilled propane tanks unless you told them you were doing it. We had OSHA inspections at our work. If something wasn't plainly visible for an inspector to see, it wasn't getting flagged.

Refill kits have been available for these tanks as well as the tall skinny ones since I was a kid, I remember my Dad refilling them back in the 60's, the tanks I refill are used for lanterns and heaters and yes even a BBQ, I also have a hose adapter kit so I can run my BBQ as well as my lanterns off of 20lb bottles.

Here is a tutorial on how to fill these cylinders with the proper tools, just in case anyone is interested.

I'm torn on this one. If the label says not to refill it, then don't do it. Error on caution........ If you're one that's been doing it for years, have at it. If you've never done it before, I'd think twice. At $3 a tank is it really worth taking a chance?.....

Yes, I feel a $3 dollar tank is worth the chance, if you know what you are doing.

And Bruce, BS You have to be the expert on everything don't you!
