+1 on OOPS but the only problem i see (which i also see in the course of this thread he is working on)is that he is a lil hard headed when taking instructions but hey werent you at 15

ryan....i think the reason for that is mostly a time and money thing....

this is marine.....it costs money......at 15 who's got it?
the other thing is the time it takes to fix this stuff right...(im talking about actually building a boat here) that is more time and hard labor than the average 15 year old wants to spend on a project

I will also add that the safety aspects cause strong reactions. That is true whether an adult or not. If somebody considers something that may not be safe, there are strong reactions. Add that to a sort of ageist society, a lot of dads and a teenager, and voila . . . more strong reactions.

lake......in defence of the site......you do not have all the facts to make a judgment call.

i can see the posts that have been removed....all of them....and they have been removed for SBL'S sake.
many of us here. are trying to help our friend.
some of us have spent much time with him behind the scenes, answering questions.
the only problem is that every time he posts it takes 7 moderators many hours each to keep the threads clean. some of them have become short tempered about it.

i actually think your comments were kind unfair.

guys like sasto.....roscoe. are really supportive. (and every one else that has posted)

what we are actually looking at is a 15 year old that lives on or near the water......that has been around boats most of his life...at 15 he took on a major boat project that most full grown men have failed at. he didnt do too good....but he tried !
his neighbour, a guy who saw this kid working on his boat day after day and took interest in the lad.

sbl is currently volunteering with the coast guard.
i personally see, that in fifteen years, SBL might become a full blown captain. or a boat mechanic.....possibly even a true naval architect.

I still don't see why you need to tell him to do more homework, or belittle him. What do you know of his personal life?
If you are tired of him than don't let him post, but at least be civil.

How do you know that he doesn't have some kind of handicap? or that owning a certain kind of boat is his lifelong dream? Do you know anything about his homelife? Probably not.

On the Pontoon Boat Forum ( my other site )I can honestly say that I have never seen people rude or give the answers that a few people on here do. Just my .02 worth.

And . . . it is important to note, that many members comment about how much they like it here because we don't fight, and don't allow politics, and don't allow bashing etc. Please recognize the size of this place and compare that to the Pontoon site. I have no idea, but my guess is orders of magnitude type difference. Also note that we don't allow Moderation discussions in the open forums. Please PM with any more concerns. Thanks :)

Re: what would this boat intitle and costs be?

thanks every one for being there and i know my transom was gone i was in denail because i spent way to much money to be just doing ten time more work the first year i know it was junk i realize now i wasn't listen i'm sorry i will try more now. and just a little update i didn't talk to my neibhor yet about his boat but i have a idea for lil red and i think it might be a good end result if you all help me out and stuff. but please tell me no don't do it if its out of line.
so the idea was to take the cap off put new transom and deck in the right way. but instead of just putting the cap back on. Could i turn my boat into a center console set up? is it posible it would make resale vaule a little better but i don't really care about that i just think a center console would work good for that boat and also make more room on the boat for a 14' it would take weight off the boat by getting rid of fiberglass. and make it go fast. whats your thought i under stand if you guys suggest no. but remeber i like working on boats.

structurally speaking.......this is not a good idea at all......the cap provides rigidity for the hull. the bow, as well as the transom.

you could do major modifications and make it work......but the cost in glass, resin, and other materials would be over 2 thousand dollars.

I WAS hard headed at 15 but thank God I had enough parental supervision to steer me in the right direction.

I wanted a boat at 16 so bad I could taste it. I worked hard to save money for it as well. But my Dad MADE ME put it in the bank and save for collage. At 17 (and only after I got the scholorship) he finally allowed me to build a boat with the extra money I didn't need for collage. Dad, Grandpa and Uncle helped build it.

Carpenmters and mechanics by trade I DID listen to them. She came out perfect the first time!

I followed suit with my own 2 boys as well. But not until they were old enough to handle it. Both have big brand new boats now and professional careers as well.

By all means, rip her apart and do it right the second time. Be satisfied with what you have - don't keep going on with eyes that are bigger than your wallet.

No you can't have a center console. The boat is structurally sound the way it is. Don't change the cap design unless you're a naval architect and can properly design a new cap. Even if you could design it, you don't have the molds to build it.

Re: what would this boat intitle and costs be?

in my opinion i think you would need the cap as to it provides structural support now it is possible but would take more work (unless you like your boat looking like poo) to cut off the consoles n' just make the cap go around the edge where needed then add some fiberglass to the area cut down the side to make it look smooth. then make your center console set up that you will have to run all controls n' stuff under your deck. N what we suggest is just that a suggestion if you want a center console make it a center console BUT beware of the challenges and time n money it will take, when in that time you could instead mow a TON of lawns n stuff make 2k to buy a real center console n slowly work on lil red so you still have a project to work on in your free time. I haven't seen what lil red looks like but if you got some pics of the motor i could prob tell you if its saveable

Re: what would this boat intitle and costs be?

if you go to reso thread and look up 1968 chryler youll see it. and if no's the answer i won't it's not really the setup i like me and my dad would both perfer a center console i would like a center console more then the runabout the runabout seems really small and very limited space. the hull is real stable but in chop its not good because i have a bad deck if you guys could help me through this and make this boat a center console then i'll keep it and work on it i mean the hull will have to be sanded to get the house paint off and stuff like that but i do have a sailboat to keep me on the water this summer so i won't be rushed to finish this boat. i like the stablilty of the trihull i like the size of how cheap it is to up keep and pay for gas. also i can go any were with this thing. maybe if some one can even show me a diffrent setup then center console maybe a little cuddy somehting like that i'm not trying to play around i'm seroius i will keep this boat if i can do this

Re: what would this boat intitle and costs be?

Well, i guess i will throw my thoughts in here... when i was 16 dad had a 20' webbcraft w/ 350 and i pulled the engine and rebuilt it and got everything ready. I did all maintenance, fluids, trailer lights, etc... I did the work and dad paid for the parts. I did borrow his truck and take it out on the weekends just me with my friends. So basically i had to pay for gas in the truck and boat... plus beverages :) And i could barely make that work. That is a lot of boat and i don't see it working for you. But, you might have a better paying job than i did. So, carry on. And goodluck!

Then if i were you i would take all your left overs from lil red and part it out like the motor mount and then seperate the lower from the power head, all your controls and wires, gauges. N putt them all on ebay maybe you make 200-500 dollars and put that towards buying a center console here in FL you can get some good CC for a lil over 2K which is what you will spend on that boat you dont like the setup. then chop the haul of lil red n drop it off in the junk yard. Then you can make another 3-800 on the trailer so right there in a good market (which is now) you have 1300 almost all of what you need for a RUNNING center console.

just my 2cents

Re: what would this boat intitle and costs be?

I think I remember reading other posts that stated the motor was still running now.....no sense parting that out if it is. If thats the case I would sell that seperately. Around here there is a decent market for that. Usually if someone takes care of the boat, the hull will be in good shape and it makes sense to just repower it if something catastrophic happens to the motor.

I would sell the trailer seperate too.....and then junk the hull.

Put that money in the bank, and save some money to buy something that is closer to what you are looking for....

back to little red are we? junk it. There is no reason on God's green earth to spend another minute or dime on it. Get an old center console, or rig a boat DESIGNED ORIGINALLY WITH AN OPEN COCKPIT and have a great summer. Put your 50 on it if you must. Get out of the yard and on the water!

i agree with the above post.....

as far as a tri hull.......sbl.......in chop.....those things will beat the stuffings out of you and your back.

they are great boats on a calm lake....love em....very stable fishing platform......but in bigger water with chop......they will rattle your teeth loose

Yes. we all know a lot about this guy--his personal life, his home life, his economic situation, his abilities and skills. He ahs been a very open frequent flyer. If you just walked in the room you'd assume we were jumping on the guy but he's like a well-known nephew at this point. Relax.

Looks like a worthwhile project on a relatively decent trailer. Worth a couple bills.
