Re: Water Wasp Mini Boat

Greetings bigmack14 and welcome to the Water Wasp forum. Please post pics of your WW when you can, would love to see it. Also I'd like to echo Chris's request for a copy of the WW manual and price sheet if possible, you can e-mail me at your convenience at DELETED . Like Chris I've also yet to get my WW wet, I have a couple of steps left to do to the restoration and she should be ready.

The pic is taken in the 60's. According to the back of the pic it was taken July 4th, 1966. However, that is yet to be confirmed. If it is 1966 it might spread new light on when they were produced. As you can see it was made by Avenco Marine. You can also see the original layout of the boat. Including the original pinstripes as seen in the pictures above.

bigmack14 thank you. Interesting to see Avenco Marine listed as the company.

I know there is not a current picture up but we have a 3 gallon gas can jammed between the back of the seat and the motor. It is strapped on but the gas line and everything just sits out exposed. I like the look of it under the haul and it looks like that is where it originally went according to the picture (as I do not see a tank behind the back seat.)

bigmack14, this is a close match to the WW original bowlight, yhttp://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-NOS-FISHING-BOAT-BOW-LIGHT-w-ORIGINAL-BOX-MOUNT-BATTERY-OP-STRATOLITE-/380665161668 ,you would need to make a mounting plate to fit it to the WW. If you go back on this thread to #113 you will see a pic of the original WW bowlight and the original mounting plate, (just a flat metal plate with a small bend that if memory serves me has a small hole in the bend for mounting bolt, should be easy to make). Hope this helps.

That's awesome thank you. So one thing that I am curious about is what your wasp does in the water. In particular how it handles. With my experience the boat likes to torque to the right if you let go of the steering wheel. It may have something to do with the propeller being the only thing in the water and the boat just turns with the propeller... But it might have to do with the steering cables being on too tightly? Do you have any insites on this?

Re: Water Wasp Mini Boat

My guess would be its your prop rotation. When as a family we had an 18 foot Maxum ski boat with a big Mercury outboard on the back, the outboard had power trim, when first underway you would feel the boat pull to the right, you then would just work the trim switch to adjust the outboard to get the boat to track straight. With these smaller outboards you might be able minimize the pulling to the right by adjusting your tilt pin on the transom bracket, my experience has been that placing the tilt pin in the 2nd position slot from the boat transom works best for proper boat handling.

Sneaking in a June update on the WW. In the interest of safety installed a kill switch, see pic. Picked-up a flat diamond aluminum sheet from Home Depot and shaped out a mounting bracket for the remote control, then a box bracket for the kill switch installed next to it. I like this model of kill switch. The WW will have accent stripes painted on it next week, will send pics when finished.

Looks great. I need to install a kill switch. There has been more than a couple of times that you take a turn and find yourself clinging on. It would be nice to know that if you do fall off that the boat wont drive away from you. I would suggest the stripes that originally came on the boat when you add them (for originality sake). See manual which has the stripes.

Looking at the manual you posted bigmack14 it states that a cut-off switch was included with the WW. It would be interesting to know what the original set-up was.

Re: Water Wasp Mini Boat

Bigmack14,
I believe I have a partial nav-light. Basically an old flashlight w/red & green split lens. But, it's missing the rear battery cover. I wouldn't think it'd be too difficult to find the cover on ebay, or at least a donor flashlight.

BUT - how do the rest of us get the info from your manual? Can you / would you scan it?

Alas, my w/w sits in a barn waiting. I had good intentions of making things happen this spring, but simply haven't gotten to it. May come down to finding a new home for it, if I don't get some time to put into it.

Now - for an update:
Bigmack14, after reviewing the list below can you add yours?

KNOWN WATER WASPS

1. Scamp Deluxe, Yellow over White, Possibly the earliest made (St Paul), No SN, No light or vent scoop. (with stabilizers on bottom)------Cambridge, MN

2. Old Scout, Green, SN. W7-0159 (Savage, MN), Light and vent scoop, Stabilizers on bottom.------Aurora, Illinois.

3. Waterwasp, White, SN. W7-0253 (Savage, MN), Light and vent scoop, Stabilizers on bottom.------Lakeville, Minnesota

4. Bakeys, White over Black, SN. W7-0307 (Savage, MN), Light and vent scoop, No stabilizers on bottom. ------Clyde, New York

If you do end up getting rid of it. I know someone that would be interested in the vent and the nav lights off of it... This guy!

Bigmack, I don't have a vent scoop in front. Just a hole where the fuel fill goes. BUT, you can have one of my nav-lights. Send me an address!

Really? That would be awesome! DELETED. I would love to get the original look back in the boat and it would be a huge piece that I have been missing. Thank you!

Re: Water Wasp Mini Boat

July restoration update on the WW. Ordered a set, (2) remote control OMC engine control cables, 6 feet in length. These are the shortest length you can order for pre-1979 OMC outboards and given the distance between the remote control and the where the outboard sits on the transom work out just perfect. The engine control cables and remote control pictured earlier are 7 feet in length, just a little to long, I placed those on another mini-boat recently acquired, see pic. This boat is believed to be a rare 1965 8 foot GW Invader. It shares some of the same hardware as the WW, transom handles, steering pulleys, steering wheel.

Thanks Willyclay. All indications are that it is an early GW Invader. This 8 foot model was produced/discontinued before they went into big production in 1966 with their popular 10 footers' and larger watercraft. Should be fun to operate. No plans to touch it up, use it and enjoy it. Nice part is the WW and this GW are able to share one car port in my garage.

Have a quick favor to ask. I'm having some "artwork" being done on the Water Wasp, during the restoration I had to remove the original Water Wasp decal on the side of the seat. I have a very talented artist who plans on recreating the decal. Could one of you WW owners get back to me with the length of the decal and also the top to bottom dimension, thank you, oldscout.

Got nuttin, OldScout. Got a custom WASP graphic in mind.
But I DID just watch a folding Evinrude 4hp sell on Craigslist for $400.00 . It was gorgeous too. Even came with the plastic case that Evinrude provided back in the day.

Really? That would be awesome! DELETED 98661. I would love to get the original look back in the boat and it would be a huge piece that I have been missing.

Big Mack! Did you get your bow light?

Thanks for the thought Bakeys. Hoping to have the decal reproduced to scale on both sides of the seat. Also should soon be posting pics of the new graphics the WW will be sporting, I'm letting this airbrush artist take some artistic freedom with the WW.
