Re: Water Wasp Mini Boat

Have a quick favor to ask. I'm having some "artwork" being done on the Water Wasp, during the restoration I had to remove the original Water Wasp decal on the side of the seat. I have a very talented artist who plans on recreating the decal. Could one of you WW owners get back to me with the length of the decal and also the top to bottom dimension, thank you, oldscout.
I think this is what you are looking for. This decal is on both ends of the seat. It measures five inches wide and three inches high.

The decal on my boat measures 5 and 3/8 inches long and 3 inches high. and is only on the left side of the seat.

I would second this measurement as well as the fact that it was only on the left side of the boat.

Wanted to share how I approached the installation of cable steering on the Water Wasp. I'm guessing many of the WW's have the same type of steering drum which has the spiral grooves, considered to be one of the better designs. You can google boat cable steering and there are alot of good articles out there for laying it out. I have found that removing the steering drum is the easiest approach. I purchased 25 feet of 5/16's cable at Lowe's. Find the middle of your cable, place it in the cavity of your steering drum that runs across it top to bottom, grab the cable end closest to your steering wheel end and wrap it around the drum following the grooves coming off the top of the drum. Do the same for the other half, (port side), again coming off the top of the drum. I tie it all down with rubber bands to hold it in place, see pic. Re-install your drum. Run your cables through their pulleys. I start on the port side, securing that end of the cable. I use a spring on the starboard side to allow for tension, see pic. Remove the rubber bands on the steering drum.

Re: Water Wasp Mini Boat

So this thread is the reason I joined the site. 10 years ago I bought an orange Water Wasp from a gentlemen in Wahpeton, ND advertised as a "mini speed boat" for $100. I had visions of a GW Invader. Boy was I disappointed! But the boat was always inside. His father was a brick layer and got three of these boats in trade for a bill at one time. He sold the other two and kept mine for his kids. They had a 10HP Chris Craft engine on it (he still had it on the wall but wouldn't sell it) and the would tie a rope around the transom and ski behind it! I put a late 70's Johnson 9.9 on it. I have to really lean forward to get it to plane out. I put a 3 gallon or so new plastic tank under the steering column and hooked up the steering that was already there along with the Johnson controls. I later found out you NEED a kill switch! It escaped my cousin once and I had to jump from a much larger boat to stop it. They really haul with nobody on them! Thank god it was going in large circles so we could catch it. Mine is orange with a white bottom and has the original Water Wasp decal with St. Paul, MN on it. It has no VIN plate either. I'll try to get pictures. It doesn't have the light or the chrome scoop option like some I see on here. There is currently a white one for sale or barter on the Fargo Craigslist. When I searched 10 years ago on the web I couldn't find anything. So I'm glad there is other owners out there! I haven't had mine out in 5 years but it is stored inside. I will try to get some pictures at some point. Thanks for all the great info!

Here's the link to the Water Wasp for sale/trade. It's on Ottertail Lake in MN he says. The same lake mine used to be on. He said this one was blue before he painted it. The owner is out of Lake Park, MN vintage ripple hopper/hydroplane

Re: Water Wasp Mini Boat

Welcome Xtrom,
This is pretty interesting stuff. It's great to see another WW and owner make it to this page. For that matter, TWO WWs and one owner. Perhaps it would be appropriate to get ahold of the guy on Craigs and refer him to this site. At least give him an opportunity to direct the new owner here for their own benefit, as well as ours.
One peculiarity in regards to the Craig's List WW is the front end and no molded area for the vent/nav light. I wonder what prompted the change in design. A change that took a fair amount of effort to implement, I'd suspect.
But yes, Xtrom, get us some pics! The more, the better!
Mine still sits in a barn, patiently waiting for some TLC. It's still not high up on the 'to do' list, although I find this thread a source of inspiration.
Time will tell.
Just glad to see us Water Wasp folks all assembling in the same forum. Kind of like a band of misfit brothers.

Re: Water Wasp Mini Boat

Greetings all. Looks like I have have run out of time given the weather to get this WW wet, she is almost finished, just some wiring. I did have the opportunity to enter her in a large vintage ACBS, (Antique Craft and Boat Society) show. I was fortunate to have been awarded 2nd place in the fiberglass class. Trust me the boat that was awarded 1st place deserved it, it was an outstanding 25 foot 1955 beauty. I've enclosed a couple of pics of the WW at the show. The airbrush art on the WW and outboard was by Paul Boeckman, I really like his work.

Love the artwork! The 25 footer must have been a real beauty. Any other pix from that show?

Thanks for the link Old Scout. All I can say is WOW! There will be a wooden boat show 50 miles up the road from us on Saturday but I will miss it due to a grandson's football game. Maybe next year. I have enjoyed the ride with this thread and am looking forward to your splash!

The Water Wasp was a nice addition to this vintage boat event. With its unique watercraft design and Paul's artistic touch it was a real crowd pleaser. I'll try to post some close-up pics this coming week.
