Wow, that is some impressive work. Are you the same Old Scout as the one on Pirate?

Very interesting thread as I live less than a mile from Savage,MN. Savage has quite a history. Google Dan Patch and you will see a lot about early Savage. In fact, ships for WWII were built in Port Savage (on the Minnesota River now owned by Cargill and used to load barges full of the heartlands product) and floated down the Mississippi. I may not be able to resist trying to find the answer to this caper.. I know several people in my social group that were raised in Savage and may have information..

RogerWa, you'd do a darnsight better than any of us if you could find ANY information. I thought the local librarian did a pretty decent job checking into things and she came up empty-handed anyway. Hard to believe as it was only a little over forty years ago.

My WW is still in the barn. My focus as of late has been a "classic" motorcycle I picked up. Not that a '79 is all that classic, but it's what I do for a job that makes it appropriate. I work for a company that specializes in vintage Japanese motorcycle parts.

But now that we've had a couple days in the 60s, the WW project may be under way soon.

Keep well all. Keep us posted Old Scout - the ice is off the water by now!

An offroad website. Funny thing is, that Old Scout is big into wood boats.

i've read some "old scout" boat threads over pirate4x4 as well. i was going to ask him the same thing. two different dudes into both old IH scouts and old boats as well. not too far fetched.

May update, installed a 1957 Gale Buccaneer 12 horsepower electric start outboard to the back or the WW. Pics were taken today at an Antique outboard event. Have as yet to get her wet, currently our local waterways are off limits to boating to due high water, (spring flooding).

I did not enter her into the judging, at this event it was for outboards only and the 1957 Gale Buccaneer is nice but no prize winner. Here's a pic of my 1956 Gale Buccaneer 12hp electric start that has won "Best in Outboard" class. It is all factory original, it lay undiscovered for a long time in a mom and pop hardware store.

Wow! That is nothing less than spectacular. Maybe someday I will blunder across one. Thanks for the info and pix.

Thanks, just got lucky on that one, stumbled across it when I was looking for a 1958 Johnson 18hp. You gotta love the two tone paint jobs of that era, what with the teal color over the bronze, its so 1950's.

Totally agree! The late 50's had color and style, then came chrome. However, my 1959 Johnson 35 (RDSL-21) was kinda ugly. My first outboard was a Western Auto private-brand "Wizard" version of a Mercury KD4S. In 1947, it had a gold paint finish but that was about it. Wish I still had it to play with now. Good luck!

I concur with your view of the 1959 Johnson/Evinrude outboard line-up, just not good looking. The boats beginning that same year also started to take on a plain jane look, much like the automobiles.

In addition to what Old Scout is saying, the scoop vent in front creates a more than positively ventilated atmosphere for the fuel tank. For what it's worth, I don't recall where I got this idea / info, but my understanding is that the access hole under the nav light was for a fuel filler neck. Somehow that just made sense to me although I didn't know how it worked. Wish these Wasps came with a manual!

Old Scout, what's the black box for? Looks like a 220 outlet. are you installing a clothes dryer on your WW?

Interesting that you should ask for the manual. I to am a fan of the water wasp. My dad grew up in Saint Paul MN and was fortunate enough to ride around on one of these as a kid on Waconia Lake. He comes from a large family of 8 kids and their father knew better than to put a over 10 hp motor on the boat, or he risked losing one of them. His was a nice little johnson 5 hp. The johnson is actually in my garage as we speak.

Now for the more interesting part. When I was a kid we would take road trips to MN and I had the opportunity to ride it (and even drive it) with the help of my dad. A few years ago the aunt that owed the wasp was looking to get ride of it. My dad and I drove from WA to MN to go and pick the old boat up.

I know almost nothing about boats but I can tell you that my family doesnt throw away anything.. We have the original manual that came with the boat including the purchase price. As far as the boat goes. I have had it out the past 3 summers on the Columbia River / Puget sound / and a couple of small lakes near portland Or. We have upgraded the motor from the old johnson 5 hp to a mercury 10 hp. I can do 25 on flat water. I am missing the original Navigation lights and the vent scoop. I would love to know if anyone on here has those parts laying around and would like to get rid of them.

Happy to answer questions if I can. Thanks for the thread its fun to see other people with similar interests on this little boat.

Bigmack14,
I believe I have a partial nav-light. Basically an old flashlight w/red & green split lens. But, it's missing the rear battery cover. I wouldn't think it'd be too difficult to find the cover on ebay, or at least a donor flashlight.

BUT - how do the rest of us get the info from your manual? Can you / would you scan it?

Alas, my w/w sits in a barn waiting. I had good intentions of making things happen this spring, but simply haven't gotten to it. May come down to finding a new home for it, if I don't get some time to put into it.

Now - for an update:

I would have to say that you are being lead astray. The advice on 10-20hp motors is just insulting to your water wasp.

Treat that girl right, she didn't survive all this time to have a poulan weed wackier strapped to he wee little transom.

Give her what she has earned, a 250 Evinrude E-Tec with the biggest jack plate you can find, and 9 hydrofoils all duct taped together. Nitrous would be a good way to show your water wasp love as well.

Needless to say, all those hydrofoils are going to make it run so perfectly, that you should be on the look out for a used F1 spoiler to counteract the lift of the foils.

Super flake bass boat paint job, and she is ready for a test drive in the neighbors hot tub!

Why stop now?

Re: Water Wasp Mini Boat

Greetings bigmack14 and welcome to the Water Wasp forum. Please post pics of your WW when you can, would love to see it. Also I'd like to echo Chris's request for a copy of the WW manual and price sheet if possible, you can e-mail me at your convenience at DELETED . Like Chris I've also yet to get my WW wet, I have a couple of steps left to do to the restoration and she should be ready.
