Re: Transom repair

Disaster narrowly avoided! I don't know anything about glass work for the repairs needed but there are dozens of guys here that do know and are very helpful. Welcome to the best forum on the net, the iboats forum! The best thing you can do now is to just dive right in and start tearing her down.

Re: Transom repair

Would rather not take the top o the boat off and the cosmetics of a patched splashwell don't bother me. Is cutting the splash well bad for structural integrity?

Re: Transom repair

You can do it this way, but...You will need to remove a section of the rear deck to get to the bottom section of the transom. The stringers may be attached to the transom and if so will need to be cut away and then "Sistered" back in. Not a problem, just wanted to clue you in to the issues at hand.

Re: Transom repair

The motor is off. The wood/transom is pulling away from the stern glass/skin. Can't tell from inside or outside the boat if the transom sits in a channel or if it makes up the whole back of the boat. Not sure how to proceed. Any thoughts would helpful. the first pic is from inside the boat looking back at the transom. second picture is of the skin pulling away from the transom wood. fourth and fifth pic is of the joint where the top and bottom join at the stern.

Re: Transom repair

is that the outer skin thats completely broken loose from the side of the hull??? the wood runs from Port to Starboard (all the way across the back) and up into those upper wings. Yes it's basically the entire rear of the boat. It appears to me that the PO has NOT given you the full scoop on that boat. It has some major issue IMHO.

Re: Transom repair

Welcome to the Dry Dock! I would start by checking the rest of the boat for signs of rot.... Like Wood said a rotten transom may be a sign of more issues....rotten stringers deck etc. I would do some exploratory core samples through the deck and check for water saturation in your flotation foam. Take a 2" hole saw and make a hole in the deck.... a 1 1/2" metal sink tailpiece from the plumbing dept to push down into the foam to extract a core sample....remove foam from pipe and squeeze it to see if its holding water....if it is you will need to remove the deck, dig out the foam and start drilling into the stringers to check for rot there too....

Good to see you and your passengers made it out safe from your first outing! I know you will rebuild your boat better than when it was new if you follow the advice from the great people here on iboats!

Re: Transom repair

The outer skin has separated from the transom. The rear of the boat appears to have been made skin on wood. Will continue to post pics and findings. As far as the po, I believe it wasnt intentional. I'm looking at a full rebuild of stringers deck transom.

:joyous:Here she was in the water at turkeyfoot lake north east Ohio. Gonna have to keep this vision forefront to stay motivated.:joyous:

this was the first day in the water after cleaning, prepping, getting legal BEFORE transom failure which occurred 2 days later.

Re: Transom repair

If you are going to pull the cap be sure to support the hull so it doesn't flex out of shape on you. Also take lots of measurements across the beam width so you can check if it spreads....You will have a bad time getting the cap to fit back on if it does ;)

Re: Transom repair

I know I'm nowhere close to fabricating stringers but I'm curious about stringer solutions. As you'll see in the photos, the original stringers are foam wrapped in ply wrapped in glass. Should I try to replicate the original design or is there a better way? Thnx in advance for the feedback

Re: Transom repair

Thanks for the link. The original stringers are 6-8 inches wide. Can I double up 2x's or is a narrower stringer acceptable? Could I do parallel 2x's foam the gap then 2x cap? This is all new to me. The boat top comes off tues. then the REAL work begins

Re: Transom repair

The red circle indicates your stringer. Are you saying this section is filled with foam? How wide is it at the circled section? How tall is it. Do you have any idea how thick the wall is?

Re: Transom repair

The stringer is wider than your circle. It's maybe 6 -8 inches wide by 2-3 tall where you have indicated. Sorry I don't have exact measurements. I did a few minutes of digging before coming into the steel mill today. The stringer is foam wrapped in 1/2 to 3/4 ply covered in glass. Thanks for your thoughts on how best to replace this setup.

Re: Transom repair

Foam from edge of stringer to edge of hull. Larson left the middle open to funnel water to the pump or out the drain/plug. I think the damage came from the top down on the stringers. When I lifted the floor the glass under the seat area was compromised. I was so intrigued to see what I was tackling that I didn't slow down to take pics. Gonna have to be a bit more deliberate.

Re: Transom repair

Little education needed I believe. All the foam must be removed from the boat. Once that has been done we can then see how the stringers are layed out. Not sure what you mean that it's wrapped with plywood. the circled area appears to be covered with woven roving glass and that is the stringer. Hard to tell exactly what's on the other side where the drill is. Need more detail in the pics. Are you saying they are something like this...

Re: Transom repair

Thnx for being patient. I just found another larson thread and I believe my "stringers" are the same. It's woven filled with foam capped by a one by ten. Gonna go home after work and explore some more before I demo anything else.

Re: Transom repair

Good luck in your restoration, and I am glad you were able to make it out of that hairy situation in-tact. I have began a transom venture myself, and your story is encouraging. I have a 1ft x 1ft weak spot in my transom, I am currently in the process of building a motor stand, have taken core samples from star to port of transom, will start digging this crap out and getting a closer inspection. my only problem is that I work too much not enough time off =/ Anyways good luck on your project. !
