... If you don't have good enough tin to put a buffer on it but you want the look, then this is the way to go in my book.
...

I'd say my bottom qualifies....err I mean my boat's bottom

Looks really good WM! Wow, i thought you polished it! and if you do scratch it, it will blend-in :thumb:

(now what to do with this huge can of sharkhyde  )

Looks good! A good alternative to polishing. Besides, only the fishies are gonna see it! :D

Hey thanks for floating by my dry dock guys, I appreciate all the encouragement.

Shot the 2nd coat on the bottom today. I got a couple runs, it didn't want to lay right on top of itself but I guess I can fix it maybe.

Tore into the nasty glasser with my skill saw and sawsall... it tore back into me with the glassers revenge. Felt like I had a colony of fire ants all over me until I got out of a long shower and clothes changed. Don't know how you glasser guys do it. :D

Should be easier to get at all the pertenants around the motor when I get to the disassemble stage. Oh BTW it 60 and sunny here today, think I started to get a tan already in short sleeves.

I tried painting the dash tray on my Jupiter with that Aluminum colored paint and it looked awful. I ended up going with gray. It looks amazing on your hull though! You did a great job spraying it. DO NOT obsess over minor imperfections with the bottom. Trust me, you'll never see it once she's right side up again. If there's any risk of making the issue worse, leave it alone. I'd think trying to spot shoot that aluminum color would be a nightmare.

I missed that you had started filling the holes & wanted to skin them after.

I thought you meant fill OR skin them.Shoot them w/ SE, give them 2 coats of a high build primer & then long board them, possibly repeating both the high build primer & sanding, as necessary to make them smooth?
If you want that "glass smooth" finish, this is the process ! Guide coat in between.

This is how the guys building street rod do it. Of course, those are trailer queens, and I don't think anyone here is restoring a SC to look pretty sitting on a trailer !

Looks good

I had thought about some automotive paint in a silver color, I saw a few newer boats with a paint job that looked a lot like bare aluminum.

I'm still up in the air what to do with the sides of my boat, polishing Is just such a pain... :)

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

Busted out the base paint job on the hull this weekend and pulled the tape. :)

Not the greatest paint job by any means but it'll do for my 44 year old tinny.

Yeah I can't wait to see her out in the sun.

So the rotten glasser got it's fill of me too this weekend. I ripped, sawed, tore and busted out what was in my way and some things that weren't just for good measure.

I ended up with the steering out, shifter, Faria gauge cluster, bow light, fluke anchor, 3 dock bumpers, about a 100' of good rope, 3 pole stern lights  and the outdrive on the work bench. I also have a coffee can full of good SS fasteners, around 14 feet of SS piano hinge, rod holders and the folding seats are out too opening up the whole boat. Hoping next week to tear out the heart and be done with the mangy pile of itchy carp.

Thanks for taking a look guys.

Paint looks great, but yep needs some sunshine to, well, you know, shine

Sounds like you got a nice pile of extra goodies too

i wanna see her in the sun too. Your pics look like black & whites cuz the only color in the shop are a few things on the bench. :)

Only 3 pole lights, are you sure you have enough?

Yeah apparently 2 is not enough and 4 are too many.

This week I will get her back on the chariot. Pretty boring pics of nothing much, I will try to get something when she goes off to her final resting place. :D

I'm happy that I have this gauge cluster tho. I just need to figure out the bezel rings, they're a nasty worn off black and brass color.

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

Looking at the dash panel, I understand the need for three stern lights. The only thing missing is a pirate flag. LOL

Actually, it's really got some good info with the horns, channel markers, etc. for a salty boater. Will the panel fit on the Chieftain's dash or is it just a gauge source?

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

Yeah that dash panel is messed up, some of the markers are wrong too...

Going to use the gauges only, I need to remove the rings, strip, prime and repaint them. Not sure may just return them to being a nice gloss or satin black again since the dials are black. The tach didn't work when I tested everything out but when I removed the panel I saw there was a wire to it disconnected so I hope that's all that was wrong with it. The rest of the gauges seemed to be working just fine.

Great job on the bottom! Spring is around the corner, and it's about time for me to resume my Chieftain project... Bring on the sunshine!
