Yeah it's going to be a bit before the V6 goes in. I have to rehab the trailer the glasser is on and switch over before I add the monster iron to the Chief.

Oh yeah and for you guys still using butter knives to cut aluminum, here is a small demonstration of what a non-ferrous metal saw blade will do it a little table saw 7-1/4" blade can also go in a chop saw or skillsaw. The Diablo I use costs a little over $40 at HD but is worth every penny.

Enough said about that, it would take 15 minutes to cut that old sign up like that with a jigsaw. Big bonus is the super straight laser cut line.

She's comin' together agua!

Those motor are STOUT!

El-diablo cuts like butter!

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

Some forward progress this weekend on the motor mounts. Motor mount stinger meat all basted up in spar.

I wanted these mounts to be strong so I added a reinforcement bracket to each side with solids through the bracket and hull bottom (5200 included) right under where the V6 mounts will be resting. The large flange rivets 2 per rib holding the mount riser are very stout solid stainless steel rivets that takes 2 pulls of the pneumatic riveter to seat each one. The deck supports will also be attached to the motor mounts.

Resto buddy had a birthday today so he was over to help on the mount install afterwards we deep fried some fish and chips in peanut oil to celebrate.

Aqua - I think your tinny is haunted. :D

A suggestion/question. What about tying the mounts to the stringers? The insides are riveted to the ribs and hull, but the outsides next to the stringer are floating and the motor might shake/wobble/shift from side to side. A couple of lags through the stringers into the blocks would do it and the stringers will be held tight when the floor is in.

Good eye, yeah when I took the pic they hadn't been bolted up yet and the covers were still loose too. I just dropped the meat in and put the cover on for a photo.

Whew - I just didn't want to see the motor shaking. And it sounds like you aren't planning on letting it do that, either. :)

I should have known not to try and hurry up a photo of unfinished work, I've been around here long enough to know someone would call me on it, like GAB. :D

Here is the finished motor mount project with a fresh coat of stinky primer over the even stinkier coat of AL primer. Now I need to decide what color to paint the bilge. I'm thinking maybe gloss black like the MC motor that will be living in there?

I know there's more I could have done and less as well. I look at these new mounts as a tremendous improvement over what SC put in for the original inline MC 120 that only weighed in 100 lbs or so less than the V6 replacing it.

Looks solid aqua! some sweet tin-work right there. Yeah man, nothin' gets by GaB! :hat:

I think if i were painting the bilge, I'd go white...easier see in there (like oil leaks, loose treble hooks, etc.).

Sorry I'm a little late to the mount party, real nice job on them by the way. My 201 had the stringers built 1"lower than needed, then the mounts were shimmed up with blocks of wood. I replaced the interior wood in the stringers and made new laminated ply spacers sealed with spar. It all worked out well.
I agree with BF white for the bilge so it will reflect light instead of eat it. If you drop an important screw down there you want to find it.

I'm for white or a light color. It's the Black Hole of Calcutta when she's all together. White or light color shows more than dropped trebles and screws - Leaks are more visible too.

WM - I'm just acting like Quality Control. I didn't know what stage you were at on the mounts, but I don't want you to go "Oh poop, I shoulda......"

BTW - Better than factory! :D

If it starts looking like a urinal from all the stains, I know who's to blame.

Urinal? I didn't mean that kind of leak. It does look kinda porcelainy. Did you put a Kohler stamp on it. Very clean!

You guys all know what nice glossy white paint looks like after hot motor oil gets on it, even after cleaning the oil off.

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

That's why you need to use lots of clean white towels in the bilge, under the engine when doing an oil change......OK, well maybe not clean white towels...
Also, a neat tip...when removing the oil filter, use a zip lock bag as a sort of glove, once you loosen the filter enough to turn it by hand...
pull the bag up around the filter when it comes off to keep the majority of the mess contained...
Another trick a friend showed me...if you have the room, put a catch pan under the filter and punch a hole in it to drain most of the oil out of it before removal...
BTW, mounts and bilge are looking real nice!

Not to spend more of YOUR money, but wouldn't a remote oil drain prevent spillage?

And fix the leaky motor. I heard Flomax helps, but it's not FDA approved for this use and you must exercise care while operating heavy machinery. :D

And keep the doghouse closed and no one, not even you will know it's stained until you change oil. :)
