Got started on the primer top coat for the inside of the hull today. It was nice to break out the HVLP and shoot some muddy primer through it. I decided to use the same Vansickle tractor primer and after reading I found the primer was also Alkyd based that needs no sanding to get the top coat to adhere. 1 qt was 11 bucks and I only used 12 oz of it, covers real well.

I knew that would get a few of you, the lumber company shipped my order of marine grade ply between sheets of OSB, banded and wrapped in heavy plastic. The lumber yard lingo for those OSB pieces are "scabs".

Well that was nice of them, around here the pile comes complete with fork lift marks on the bottom sheet, and coffee stains on the top

bah, I knew you of all people wouldn't be using OSB on your rebuild...but that would've been a fun "social experiment" to experience the community's reaction

Whew! When I saw your the pic, I was thinkin' OSB too. Then I thought it's a bad pic and reflection on the plastic wrap.

Guess I was right - It is OSB.:D

Man I envy you guys with a shop big enough to fit your projects. My poor old islander is just sitting out in the snow and the cold. It flips me off every time I walk past it and go into the nice warm house.....

I kinda figured that it was protection, but I had to ask.

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

A few new things to show for the weekend. I had corrosion pits and massive amounts of holes in the transom where the transducer, speedo and trim tabs were mounted. I filled, skinned and sanded level all of the pitting and holes. I finally have all of the patching done on the transom, the Z bracket is riveted back in and so are the floor supports which can be seen when peering through the keyhole.

Oh yeah and I shot a base coat of white inside. Decided to go a bit light on the base coat due to temps being at or just under 60. 16 oz paint, 1 oz catalyst hardener and 1.5 oz of VM&P Naphtha.

Oh man, she's really coming together Agua! Rivet work looks good!! :thumb:

I'm curious what's holding the "kicker plate" on? Are there bucktails & if so, things could get interesting when you're lowering the transom wood.

Yeah bucktails but they have been modified with my belt sander to accommodate the transom wood drop in. Once its in a rap or 2 with a rubber mallet should seat them in the ply. Don't have much choice in the matter, small bucktails poking into the ply or a bunch of holes in a pitted weakened mess. As you know the patch rivets serve no structural need, only to hold the patches on.

Exactly, but I don't think you want to pierce that protective coating on your transom wood. I'd grind them off altogether once you know the 5200 completely cured. Plus, you'll be drilling through-holes for the kicker bracket anyways.

Another trick would be to: 1.) clamp the plate in place, 2.) remove the existing rivets 3.) chamfer the transom-skin holes. 4.) set new rivets (with a lil'5200) and grind-off the bucktails. The chamfer will lock the rivets in place.

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

Yeah that 5200 was put on over a week ago so it's now part of the transom, I troweled it on filling the pitting so the kicker plate isn't coming off anytime soon. At 50 I'm not going to be very anal about little things, by the time that transom wood is rotten I probably will be too.
