Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

Man you guys are right on it tonight... My hull stiffener dilemma goes like this...

I started drilling out the side and bottom seam rivets to install the braces. These were the tightest most stubborn rivets I've ever seen. So I popped the heads and tried to drive them out with a punch. No go, it was actually bending the aluminum out of shape and looked to be breaking the seal between the 2 pieces! Only way to finish getting them out was to drill the whole rivet shaft out.

Having only 130 rivets to go :blue: and the thought of breaking the seal between the side and bottom on the seam I decided to try something else. It will either work forever or only last another 40 years. :D

I bedded the rivet line with a large amount of 5200, seated the braces in it and then drove in 4 rivets, 2 in the bottom, 2 on the side with a bead of 5200 around the rivets we drove in. Anyway this is what the end result looks like.

I guess it is what it is now but when moving the side, it no longer flexes at the center of the splash rail, it's been transfered up above the braces.

Thanks for the pic WM you answered a question I had about removing the rivets at the seam or bridging over them. So I will be removing more side rivets:whoo:.

Forward progress, yes that's what makes these restos end with a splash... Transom and pit filling work this weekend, I got a skin of MT on inside of the transom. A tough spot that was giving me concern was where the PO had a outboard transom bracket installed that ate into the transom skin. I started filling the holes with JB stick before remembering to take a pic.

y4mi_mL8xN7xZU48L-k5VdTbzobKvevFSPYeiQIXq-uAroj5zTDWsqx8hA3KzzavCNlYuj0WeReNAvA8CwwFU9vDdGLrH_VLhmeYs0fLREvfXmftKCO-NI4wsUi01bsg7SwqUpaFyUgojwFO16v7_n4HB7CqpPSMiFJl_4COg2I7LVaTrSbKAwnXo0GVvu8UTtjWsoYVLjP1QYZ3AiE-Qz7BQ

So I cleaned the area with the wheel and wiped it down with acetone. I then filled and sanded down all the holes with JB stick Filled all of the pitting with 5200 and then the cover patch also back buttered with 5200 was riveted into place over the pitting.

Say hello to the new kicker motor pad.

That will show the pesky corrosion, nice fix and way to mount the kicker.

Thanks Bear, that's 080 5250 I snapped up, it's real nice to work with.

Weather broke here this week, 58 today so my next big task is going to be tearing into the donor CC glasser and getting rid of it at the dump. Got an order in for MC parts and other goodies. Just doing a bit of busy work in the evenings after work on the hull. Filing pits with MT and holes with JB also some sanding. Oh yeah and slathering of Spar on the transom too.

Weekend activities included skinning the inside of the transom with MT, cleaning, sanding and Gluvit application. Gluvit isn't very photogenic...

Yeah half a can at a time heated with the gun and smeared on with a bondo spreader in the heavily pitted areas. The area that doesn't have any MT didn't have any pitting. MT strong as steal and sands like steel...

Not yet, the rotten beast is still here. :grumpy: I'm still waiting for the weather to cooperate with that chore, it has to be done over a weekend and outside.

So BF, tell me what you think would be the best way to patch these rib end stress cracks. I personally like your outside patch for one, it splits the effected area and the cracks are small and don't go out from under the rib foot. I think I would rather have the stop crack hole oozing 5200 inside the hull than the outside. I took out the rivets 2 back and the ribs were a bear to lift even a little ways up which makes me wonder about all the force being put on top of an inside patch piece rather than spread out along the foot of the rib against the hull.

Oh boy brutha-agua...external patch back-buttered with 5200...no question. :brushteeth:

Have it extend beyond each side of the rib-feet and add 3+ rivets / end.

I may have been giving conflicting messages with my recent internal patch on a rib-end. The only time that I'm using internal patches is for preventative measures. I found a micro-crack under a rivet-head on my SB side and it hasn't started to spread. I'm up-sizing to 3/16" so it will probably disappear anyway.

Okay I quickly fabbed up a couple patch pieces, put a couple redneck do bobbers in to hold them. Yah I know you put in more rivets and a bigger piece but I'm one of those sometimes less is more kinda guys. (less holes drilled in hull = pretty more better good)

Hey there my bucking bar & resto buddy with 5200 fingers. I remember taking that avatar picture. You need to start the resto on that Smoker Craft one of these days... :D

Agua, those external patches are hard-earned battle-scars for your tinnie which survived over 4 decades of PO neglect & abuse!!!

Wear them with pride!

Wear them with Honor!!

Wear them with lots of BIG FRICKEN RIVETS!!!

In all seriousness, those patches will tell you if you have enough securing them (i.e. how much 5200 comes squirting out all over your buddy ). I used 11gauge 6061 and felt that I needed that extra pulling power to get them tight to the distorted hull skin.

Huge relief for me, pit filling, hole plugging, sanding and finally I finished the inside of the hull. Sporting a nice coat of SE she is. Next is the top coat of primer.
