Just scuff sand it - you'll never be able to sand it smooth, and you may find that the aluminum underneath is actually softer than the paint on top.

Farm Truck....I guess this would be the Boat House Mercury? Farm Truck is only an 1/8 mile sled. Even though each 5 sec pass seems like 2 minutes. Lol. They even have to go to commercial sometimes before the low 5 sec pass.

Scuff it and paint it. It's just a fishing rig right? Lol. I have the same disease bud. Has to be perfect. I love it.

I know just a fishing rig with an old 1979 motor but I can;t help it.

So I'm trying to decide on which decal set to put on, they both have their plus and minus, the 79 has a cool face plate head badge . The 80-82 has gray in the decals and a pop of red.

The original 1979

The 1980 - 82.

That's a tough one. The later ones look crisper but I'm not a fan of the orange red. I would probably go with the later ones. The two tone letters look nicer and I would bet the big black beast could use a touch of red.

I'm fond of the '80-'82 color scheme myself. :D

And the red is a true red, not orange looking. ;)

Looks like so far we're all in agreement about the 80-82 decals looking best. Now I'll run this up the chain of command to the admiral and see if it flies since she's the one who puts on all my decals. :D

I'll order them Sunday night unless someone has a good argument to talk me out of the 80-82 set.

Getting with the sanding, degreasing and paint removal of every piece I can remove. Sanding... why do some parts the paint comes right off and others the stripper won't even touch. The collar with the 140 decals the paint won't even budge with stripper. The side motor mount covers if fell right off smelling the fumes of the stripper. I just don't get that, it must be a test of my will.

Maybe degrease the parts first? Could be a layer of oil on the parts that don't strip. Or maybe certain parts are powder coated?

Yeah I used Super Clean and pressure washed the parts before using the stripper. The stripper mixed with adhesive remover does take the decals and adhesive off real well. Do not use that combination indoors, lots of fumes! :mask:

Saw the pics but late to the party I think your first choice without the red would be the best unless you have red somewhere in your paint scheme for interior just my thoughts though.

No blue in the boat either.

If you're going to keep it, put the 90 hp decal on, no point advertising what you really have.
And it's interesting the ft piece is alum, I wonder if that's because it's a 6 (longer) or 140 hp, (premium engine) vs our 85 4 cyl.

blue is more subtle and water is blue. just my thoughts. if red pops on the motor, other than the bow light whats it gonna match? other than the bow light? Now it you get seats with red in them with a red pin stripe I think your on something!!!

I like the font style better on the 80-82, but prefer the original colours. I also think using a smaller HP designation would be the route I would take too.

Well the admiral said she prefers the correct year decals because they're the right ones for the motor but the other look nice too.

I have some time before I need them since I'm still sanding and after painting I'll have to wait for it to cure a while before putting on the decals.

So the Admiral decided - Which ever set you get, it's the wrong set. LOL

PS - I like the original set. :peep:
