Don't paint on beer days, WM. LOL

I won't polish my wrap, If I ever do anything, it's Phantom Black again.

Yeap the part that goes around the power head is a wrap and is stainless, it's a 3 step process to cover up the tower of power. Top is cast AL, wrap is SS and face plate is cast AL.
Hmmm... so are the cowls on my 1985 Merc 50 and 1981 Merc 70 motors also stainless?

Am not interested in polishing, just want to know for future painting efforts. ;)

I think the non skid Epihanies looks so good it's tough to stop, got the gunnel tops done and now I think I'll carry it on over the tops of the consoles since they rivet onto the tops of the gunnels I would have to do at least part of them anyway I think it would look better having it carry on. Unlike regular non skid using the poly beads and the same paint with hardener it's not only tough it has a shine too.

It never gets old seeing these decals.

Still waiting on my tank from Moeller. I did get a delivery of new fuel lines though and a big heavy box of Nautolex vinyl deck covering. Spendy boxes, 10 bucks a foot for filler hose was a shock when I first bought some.

Looking really good Rob, by the way your hanger looks kind of like mine.

Great forward progress Rob. I realized I hadn't read through the chief thread and had just jumped in toward the end. Spent the last few days going through all 84 pages. Jeez Louise you are an animal. Wish I had your gumption. You would have been done with my little restore in two weeks. Lol. The anti skid is a nice touch but the Starcraft stickers take the cake, they really set off the whole paint sceme. Keep on keeping on. Can't wait for the tank delivery.

I agree on the non skid being nice to use and good looking. Your gunwales look great. I especially like the fact it is put on with a roller. That application method is very forgiving and does not require the extensive masking necessary to protect against overspray and requires no spray gun cleanup afterward. You do have to pay for a new roller cover for each coat, but I use the small 4 inch covers that are not that expensive and allow getting into tight spots. Another bonus is that the 20 minute wait for those beads to fatten up in the paint is just about right for one beer but not enough time for more than that.

Thanks, yeah my paint cabinet is behind the mess, I got tired of dragging it all in and out and left it in a heap.

I sent you a PM about the V5 decals (deh-culls) eh

Oh man that Chief was 13 months of hard glorious labor that I get to enjoy nearly every weekend now. This one not so hard pressed since I have a boat to go fishing in when ever I want. Once I get that tank and deck is put down things will become way more interesting!

Ole Budski up there now he's an SC decal/emblem junkie, one of the things I look for when I visit his build pages, you can find the SC logos tucked all over in various locations.

Never had thought about or even knew about the Epihanies until your build, thanks for that, I love the stuff... maybe too much  Yeah I always have that wait time using the catalyst hardener in the paint has a 15 - 20 min cook time before application. Funny thing though I always seem to want to add more of the beads.

I appreciate everyone buzzing by my dry dock :yo:

I'm trying to decide on painting and replacing decals on the TOP. Man it's really rough, looks like someone drove the poor thing down 1000 miles of dirt roads causing 100's of rock chips in the paint, especially the LU. Been posting up on an Inline 6 fan forum but it's mostly guys in love with these super cool motors and a few guys who restore them. I hate sanding and something like an OB motor with all it's curves and folds is my worst nightmare. I'm thinking paint stripper and a clean slate right about now.

You nailed it there Rob, the P/O lived on a gravel road approx. 8 miles from pavement, then all our lakes have at least 5-10 miles of gravel to get to them.

Yeah with the LU hanging down it got pummeled!

So I took the top cap of the motor and put one coat of that Jasco stripper on it and hit it with the pressure washer, ya know this might not be so bad after all if the rest comes off as nicely. :)

Excellent! I'm watching this part very closely, as I'll be doing the same thing when the time comes for my Chief.

Get to it WM. It looks great all naked. That seems to be the easier way to do things anyway. If you sanded all those nicks smooth it would be nearly naked anyway. Masking off the left over paint when SE priming would be another step i'd want to avoid. Go bare and start fresh. I bet it seems to go alot quicker on this little engine then it took to strip the last few boats too. The bracket will be the only unfun part of this whole job. Drip fest if not careful. I might mask off the top of the fins on the stainless wrap part and wind up with stainless edged fins if you are stripping. Might look pretty cool. Just me though. A shot of shine on an otherwise black hole might just set it off. Wiping them after each coat might be easier. Find some sort of super dense sponge or use a rag backed with a sanding sponge using the rubber squeegee side might do the trick. Or just disregard, I just went back a few pages and took a look. That's alot of finns. Lol

Flying through it and then the part I thought was going to be easy has put the brakes on. The top and face plate (which is stamped aluminum, hah I didn't have that much beer) were super easy, one whiff of that Jasco stuff and the paint was melting off. Then comes the wrap... OMG! A thick gooey layer didn't even take off a spec of paint, just the color from the decal. Got it slathered again and covered up with plastic now simmering but I have my doubts.

The 2 pieces that came clean right away.

Maybe just scuff the wrap with sand paper. Maybe the wrap is powder coated?
