I finally got my consoles and 2 acre splashwell primed and painted yesterday. Thinking about going with the non skid on all the gunnels and top flats of the SW since they take so much abuse especially on a fishing boat. I think the paint with hardener added and the Epihanies non skid it would be tougher and easier to repair.

No better place for the fresh paint to cure un-molested than inside the boat. Tape on and non-skid cooking in the pot. The gunnels are cured so I'll have to sand them before application.

I'm a little color blind so this may seem obvious to everybody else, but is the top color green with a light gray hull? Or is the top coat a dark gray with a light gray hull?

Whichever, the paint looks great.

Dark gray and sides are light gray. The green you see is frog tape I put on before laying down the non skid on those big flat wings of the SW. I also attached some angle AL to the SW and gunnels with solids so the wings could be backed with 1/2" ply if sometime down the road I need to mount down riggers to fish the salmon run here in the Columbia river. I guess they could be stood on too with the extra support.

My wife had to point out the green tape. That's how color blind I am.

TN - You better look over the new Jup. It may be in better condition than you think. LOL

She's looking real good, WM. When the tank arrives, you will be speeding downhill.

I wish I had put the Epiphanes non skid on the gunwales where I will occasionally walk forward. It is also easier to apply with a roller than spraying, and more forgiving since it is not a shiny finish. Reapplication with a roller will be simple when it needs repairs. It is a little harder to clean, but all non skid is that way. It all looks great.

Deciding on repainting the Merc, the paint is really nasty and the decals are chipped up in places with one missing on the face plate too. Not sure I really like this years style of decal, the 80 - 82 decals are more to my liking and they should fit just fine. I can't imagine sanding this cowl, look at the complexity and chrome strips..

While stewing on the motor repaint I got a second coat of non-skid on the SW wings and a nice coat on the gunnels. One thing I learned doing this non-skid Epihanies poly beads and using the nap roller is that bubbles form after your done, even lightly moving the roller doesn't help. So when I got done I took my air nozzle and at a distance shot air over the surface and all the bubbles popped making it look way smoother.

Before air...

Media blast the wrap. It's stainless - Are there special methods for painting stainless? :noidea:

Now you've done it someone is going to come along and say polish it.

I've always just done stainless fasteners like the AL, SE, prime and paint. The paint stays on them just fine until you grab it with a wrench or poke it with a screw driver.

So don't do that. Lol.

I'd say the sticker removal will be harder then the sanding. I went over and over my crestliner stickers with sand paper, acetone, WD-40, even this citrus stuff that softens and unsticks silicone and the outline was still there after paint. Luckily I was the only one who could see it and they made a great template for where the new ones had to go back on. Great idea on the air. It really made a big difference. Good thing you don't have a dusty shop huh?

Are you saying that the cowl is stainless?

Yeap the part that goes around the power head is a wrap and is stainless, it's a 3 step process to cover up the tower of power. Top is cast AL, wrap is SS and face plate is stamped AL.

On our 1976(?) 85 hp, the face plate is plastic.
Seems like a chem stripper would be the thing for the wrapper.

And that does run/sound nice. Someday I'd like to have one.
