Re: The search for a free (or nearly free) Starcraft!

That is a sweet rig... I might have to investigate it closer. It's hard to do long distance like that. I travel for work so I can find an excuse to get up there maybe. What the best way to check the compression on an o/b, besides taking it out on a lake and giving it hell??

$25 tool, will pay for itself by saving you from buying junk outboards.

What you want to see is all cyclinders reading within 10-15% of each other.:)

Actually I rented mine for like several weeks (cost was like $40 until returned) from Autozone as I was OB shopping. I would read this thread b4 you go it helped me :D

Yeppers Jayb. The AutoZone tool rental is a great deal. Basically you buy the tool and return it for full price+tax. I've used some expensive tools that would just gather dust between uses for nada, zip, nuttin'. And you don't have to buy AZ parts either, just rent the tool. I wish someone had a program like that for marine tools.

Re: The search for a free (or nearly free) Starcraft!

Thanks for the input guys! My experience with boats is converting a 14' jon boat to a bass boat that I ran the crap out of for 10 years. It had a 15hp evinrude that I literally never had to touch. Carpet, painting, carpentry... that's right up my alley... rebuilding an o/b I will be starting from scratch. I will definitely get a compression checker!

Ok, I am currently exchanging emails on this listing in Iowa... best part it's closer to me!! Good news is it has new floor, carpet and some paint... bad news is it has new floor, carpet and paint! I am going to feel him out on how he did the rebuild. Thanks to reading all of your post I know the right question to ask. If he has no idea what gluvit is I am definately going to low ball. Right now the the $800 asking price sounds good... maybe too good. Take a look, tell me what you think.

You should really update your profile with your location.

Thanks

Re: The search for a free (or nearly free) Starcraft!

Ok, I might have found a steal but here is my first main concern, the owner claims there are minor deep scratches on the front left side of the boat but otherwise hull is good. Look at this picture, do you think this is something that can be repaired? Does anything look odd about this picture? The second pic is the 75HP Evinrude. His asking price is $800. No seats, everything else is there, including trailer... 1979 SS.

Thanks, Corey

Looks like yur basic dock rash to me. The trim is a little beat up.

What does he say about the OB?

The rubber can be replaced , the channel might be a PITA to find but possible, think I see some vertical scratches/gouges in the hull but don't look too bad in the pics guessing they could be filled . Big question is the motor like Jas said. It looks new enough to not be electric shift, if it is good then it's a steal in my opinion, even if the motor is questionable and rest of hull is good it is a decent deal.

He claims the OB runs real good but who knows? I was concerned about the lip of the boat that has the dock rash, not sure if that can be straightened out? Looks pretty boogered up. If the OB is solid I don't know how I could go wrong. He is emailing another interior pic tomorrow I will post. My main problem is I can't get up there till next week, might miss this one.

Brian. you will find some Starcrafts here but not even close to the badly depleated price back East. I have a 22 ft Starcraft with a 200 Johnson Outboard and a 9.9 kicker I thought it was a good buy three years ago In Post Fall Idaho. I paid $ 4000 for a really nice boat, trailer and two motors anScotty El downrigger and lots of ski stuff. I live in Mt Vernon and go by your very nice fish filled lake every now and then. Good luck and hope you find what you need I just sold a total rebuilt Starcraft last month with a 50 hp Johnson and trailer also rebuilt for $ 2500. Not nearly what I wanted or needed but it has a nice new home.

Prob would not find a better one for that price. Great Johnson Manual shift and a very nice trailer looks ready to use for this year anyway.

Re: The search for a free (or nearly free) Starcraft!

The "lip" your talking about (If I'm seeing things right) is the channel that holds the rub rail in it is removable and replaceable . I know people have found a source for the rubber not sure on the channel but might find some on ebay or from another boat someone is parting out, or come up with your own custom fix ,hardwood rubrail ? wicker? pool noodle wrapped around top of boat ? Point is it's mostly a cosmetic problem and I think you will have those on any nearly free boat. If that motor is as good as he claims that boat and trailer are free in my book.:)

Thanks for passing along that CL listing Showm.I love living on the west coast except when it comes to buying certain items and boats seem to be one of them.Puget youre definitely right with how much more expensive they are around here.So I will have to keep looking around for the right one.Either that or just plan on spending some more to get one.

I agree with above posting, get a compression tester. Nothing else on the motor truly gives you the feel it is healthy (leak downs are better but not as quick / easy to do) than a good compression test. Also, buy your own - they are likely $30 or less and then you know it works. I rented/borrowed one from an auto parts store here in MN and it, unknowingly to me, was bad so I had bad readings on about 2 boats this spring that were not actually bad. I have sinced used it more times than I can count (inlaws boat motor, scooter) just because its a quick check on the health of the motor if your experiencing a hard start, etc issue.

$800.00 is a steal, definetly worth it but there is always a bargaining price so offer a buy price and see if they will work it out. Do it in person though, works better because your there with the cash and they could sell the boat and be done with it (desire is a tempting thing! :D)

Also - Perhaps EZ can segment this off in to a new thread all together from the original "nearly free starcraft" thread. Not that I truly mind you have DOMINATED IT :D lol, but then you have your own "Showmecb's Boat Hunt - Bring your eye paint and compression testers!" thread!

Lastly - WELCOME! You are WAY ahead of the game, posting pic BEFORE you have even bought a boat. Some of us, to go un-named, didnt get pictures up until DAYS after they had one, cough! :D

Re: The search for a free (or nearly free) Starcraft!

Thanks for the input guys! Yooperangler, I think you are right, it is the channel. I bet I could find a scrap one, or invent something. I will definitely buy a compression tester and then get some advice on how to use it before I go up there. Chuck sorry I didn't mean to takeover this thread, I probably should start a new thread... something new for me to figure out now :) I am just excited. Now if I could get my wife as excited :) I plan on offering $600 next week, that is if I can make the 3 hour drive and it isn't sold before I get there. If the OB checks out I am just going to say I have to spend $200 on seat and a steering wheel before I can even splash it. Here is one more interior photo, you can see what I mean about no seat... the gas tank is intriguing, nice and big. Old trolling motor mounted on bow too.

That's a well over $100 gas tank. Personally, I feel that if this is the hull you're looking for, you should not waste any time getting that man some money.

Hey gentlemen, trying to steal a 72' right now, wondering if the SS should have glass in the windshield, or if it's plexiglass? I guess the glass couldn't cost that much to replace? Thanks
