Re: The search for a free (or nearly free) Starcraft!

Hey welcome Dan! I'd agree with these fellas, 18' version of the Super Sport sounds like it would be a good fit for you. I went ahead and added ya to the first post there.

I think it'll be a tough find that particular boat in the in the northeast for the low cost of nuttin. But, if you are patient, are a hound on craigslist, are willing to jump at even the slightest wiff of a deal, you may be able to snatch one up.

Or, drive out to MI

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Here in CT if we can get something for less than 3 times what it costs somewhere else its a bargain:D

Just did a mapquest -- only 13 hours from my house to Lansing, MI. (Couple of weeks ago did 14 hours to the Outer Banks -- and that was only for vacation not something important like a boat!)

Closed bow so not sure if you'd be into that. It has the rarer smaller splashwell so there'd be more seating room in it. Could probably seat 6. Motor is 70's and could be a nice one.

Closed bow and a glasser.

Undetered by my many rookie mistakes -- here's another for your consideration (for my consideration). I think this is aluminum??? (metal trim lip around forward compartment - a clue?)

Yah, I'd say you may have $800 worth of boat there ($300 in the midwest). BUT, don't know how titles work in your area, could be trouble.

classic total gut job, and the mysterious black engine cover is a drawback.

appears to have no parting out value, and with no legals, $400 MAX

Same hull as mine and in similar condition to what I bought. A 110 Johnson/Evinrude which is what that is I believe is 80s or newer and COULD be a real good engine. If the paperwork can be put in order, might be worth pursuing. Yorkboater was interested in a NY boat a couple weeks ago and I believe there boat commission was decent to deal with.

That one's been restored recently I would guess(new paint, new ski locker, etc), and that's a heckuva motor, nice find.:)

I emailed and no reply
ting to sell

That is one of the things that bugs me about CL. Some of the ads seem like feelers instead of serious wanting to sell ads. Don't email or call me, only text is another bug. Oh well.

It is aluminum you can see the rivets in the bow photo.with a magnfing. glass. Also glass boats don't square of the corners like they do on the older Aluminum.

I think Mike may have mixed up his CitriStrip with his Lemonade. It's morning so the effects have probably wore off by now.

So you guys think that exterior grey paint was factory, and the ski locker too?

All I was saying was that the boat is not original.

Dirty, filthy and in need of a second restoration yes.:D

Found this one last night...

Thought maybe the more experienced could tell model and length. (I'm guessing its an SS by the bow rails on either side -- not sure whether it's a 16' or 18'.)

I'm following up with the seller.

I can't quite tell. I'm thinking 16 but your guess is as good as mine.

Cleaned up H A's earlier post for accuracy -

I'm going to call on this boat for the heck of it. Looks like it has been stored uncovered for quite awhile. Assuming water has gotten into the hull what kind of damage can the freeze/thaw cycles on on an aluminum hull? Anything else in particular I should ask about on a boat that has been uncovered for a while -- years?

Thanks.

Based on My experience I would look for cracks along the chine that runs at about floor height also around rivet heads. I would expect floor and transom to be shot and expect it to be a complete resto. Check out the knee brace and bilge area as well . Freezing water has the potential to do a lot of damage but most likely you would see it in areas where pressure can occur from expansion.

Oh man, check this out...

http://saginaw.craigslist.org/boa/2563603781.html

Anybody looking for one out there????

Just got off the phone with the gentleman...I might be a buyer since he says the motor only needs the carbs done. It lacks TnT but that's not a problem for me.

I'm gonna be in Frankenmuth this weekend anyways so I might as well drag home another tin can:D

He says the trailer is in good enough shape to drive back to Lansing, so that's good news if it's the truth.
