Truly a sad loss. His contributions were un-matched. He will be missed.

Very sorry to hear this about Don. Although I am still fairly new to the forum I had a few conversations with Don in various threads. He did have a different approach when delivering his information but you could tell that he really knew what he was talking about and others respected him greatly. This forum was lucky to have him.

So sorry to learn of his passing. My condolences to his family.
As a relatively new boater I have learned so much from Don's posts. Whenever I saw that he had responded to a question I would check that thread to learn something new.
He will be missed, and never forgotten.

Sorry to hear. It will be tough, if not impossible, to fill his shoes. I really liked him.

Such a shock to read of Dons passing. He was always a gentle man, polite, kind and very forgiving. He understood that as an Englishman I didn't always speak the same language. God bless you Don and by the way, go easy on the sailors in heaven who didn't maintain their ships/boats very well!

Re: The passing of Don S

I deeply sadden by this news of Don passing………He had just replied to one of my post a couple weeks ago in the I/O Merc forum… As always he gave me his knowledge and wisdom to my question…And don’t ya know 100% of the time he was spot on…. Well knowing me I have to buck the system and try stupid stuff first…… Then i do as Don said …… it’s fixed……………… As Don would say do it right the first time or don’t do it at all!

I am going to personally miss his expertise on iboats!

Condolence to his family and friends.

Happy Boating in your next life Don S!

I've been in Complete denial, 'n spent most every possible moment here on the forums, lookin' for Don's next post,...
This thread is the reality of life,...

Thank you gentlemen,... I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in my respect, 'n admiration of Don,...

Good bye my not near enough, but most dearest Friend, 'n Mentor,...
Rest in peace, you'll live forever in My mind,...

Another of Don's attributes not yet mentioned, is that he's also a Master Cabinet Maker,...

i didn't know Don S. but man, he qualifies as a hero in my mind.

Re: The passing of Don S

I'm curious what his day job was? He obviously was a marine mechanic probably working on mercruiser? Also curious how old he was? 40's, 50's, 70's etc. Was he still working at a shop as a mechanic?

I believe he was retired (retired as posted by QC), profile says "Certified marine mechanic. Volvo and Mercruiser" Don was 66, 67 this September.

Re: The passing of Don S

Like many I was completely shocked to read this news, saying to my self in my mind "this can't be"!

I didn't know him personally, but Don reminded me of the wise old tech you find in the run-down, but well equipped shop. He had his occasional crotchety moments of impatience when someone was feeding him B.S., but he truly was an Oracle when it came to understanding your problem, even when some of the posts he responded to looked like they had been written by a 5th grader. He was a strait shooter that didn't sugar coat things, and got right to the point. 99.9% of the time he was right too. He wasn't trying to impress anybody, he was just that good.

For me at least, you can tell there was more to the man than his sage advice. He had his moment's where he'd drop the stern composure, and post something that you'd say to your self "Don posted that"? I'll never forget his random posts about waking up to draw green trains with cartoon characters at 4AM. Or the post asking people what the hell their odd screen names mean. There's also the one with the argument about mandatory rear view mirrors being installed on boats. For the last page of that one, I supplied the pic of the mirrors, he did the Photoshopping. The last post in that thread was his (before he closed it), and legendary.

I also found out Don had an alter ego; "Snod" (Don S spelled backwards). It was a test name he used to try various things out with the forum using a non-moderator account. I remember stumbling upon Snod one day while checking out all the new postings on "What's New". I clicked on the post that had been created by Snod, and noticed a bunch of random stuff posted. I figured to my self "this is a spammer, and I'm gunna nail this guy!". Of course I clicked on the little grey triangle and ratted "Snod" out. Shortly there after QC and Don gave me the skinny on Snod, and Don mentioned how many times "Snod" had been put on the S-list, or banned by other mods.

Like I said, I didn't know him personally, but I'm really going to miss the guy. He truly was a gentleman, and a scholar.

God Speed Don, you're already deeply missed.

Re: The passing of Don S

Thats sad news for sure. Don was a MASTER at Volvo tech, and helped me many times with my big boat. And he (although never meet) lived near Ocean Shores, about 60 miles from me after moving from Alaska. All I can say we have lost one of the greatest, knowledgeable
old salts, and those shoes are never going to be filled again. A loss to everyone in the boating committee. RIP, Don..

I have only been a member here for 7 months and always marveled at the replies that Don S gave. He was on the ball and had a wealth of knowledge. Whenever he replied to my threads I could count on the answer being 100% correct. He will be missed by all that knew him. RIP Don.
