Re: The passing of Don S

I used to work with Don.

He was difficult, demanding, particular, without compromise, organized, short tempered, dependable, Detail oriented, direct, and with a very limited appetite for bull****.
My job was to take in, and assign jobs, get the correct parts, and deliver the boat on time, when promised. His work ethic kept me busy, and his standards kept me on my toes.

Grays Harbor bar is the worst commercially navigable bar on the west coast. (Willipa is worse, but is not considered commercially navigable.) I will say without a moment of hesitation, that when crossing that waterway, and having green water shipping over the bow, and your are gripping the wheel harder than you need to, knowing that if your engine should even hiccup you would be in major trouble...
You wanted Don to be the person who last worked on it.
Good man. Good friend!

To all of you who have wished well to his family and friends.
YOU are his family and friends, except for his kitty, who now resides with me.

Thanks for this post Sir!
It's nice to have some acumen on Don from a person who stood toe to toe with him on a daily basis.

Do take good car of his kitty. I'm sure she very much misses her friend!

Very nice to hear from someone that knew Don personally, whereas as most of us only knew him in the 'virtual' world of the Internet. I had a feeling that we were his family and friends; with that known, his dedication to us on iBoats is all the more meaningful.

I, like most people on this forum have had their quesitons answered by Don S. I always wondered how he could store all of that knowledge and be so on point with advice. I did not know him personally, though I wish I had, but I will say that he had an effect on more people than he would ever know.

God rest his soul.

Re: The passing of Don S

I just found this today, I am at a loss for words, I have read this complete thread and have to say that everything I could possibly think of has already been posted. He was a great asset to iboats and his posts will be for a long time to come. I have read many of his posts and learned from them. I got one of the calenders that he put together and had printed up, a lot of work on that project. Someone mentioned him and TashasDaddy getting together, I knew TashasDaddy personally, they would make a great pair. Rest in Peace.

Nope,... On-line, Alot,.... postin' literally in the same moment, usually along the same line of thought,...

Since I became a Mod, on the phone,... quite abit, but never enough,...

'n Yes, nlain, I've got the calender,...

Don didn't like my usin' the Barge, that I designed, 'n over-saw the buildin' of,...
Don wanted a picture of my tin fishin' barge, or the houseboat,... In the water of course,...
I told 'im that I didn't have any decent pics of either, In the water,... only a few with the boat in the background,...

After I explained that the Steel Barge has changed the way private barges are built, 'n used up on the St. Lawrence, due to Bondo's Design,...
He relented, 'n agreed to use my Steel Barge picture,...

Ya see, previous barges have always used come-a-longs to raise their ramp, 'n gravity to hold it to shore, along with mighty stout Ropes,...
The free movin' hinge, allows for the barge to be pushed away from shore, causin' some Wild rides, tryin' to load a loaded dump truck or whatever,...
Bondo was the 1 to figure out usin' Hydraulics to Lock the barge to shore with it's own weight, 'n that of the load,...
No shore lines needed,... at All,...
I used an electric start 5hp motor, 'n wood splitter pump to build it,....

Those of you with the calender, that barge is built outa old propane tanks, 'n will scale 30 tons, pushed by 500 horsepower, via twin Honda outboards,...

Is that where the Chatmount butcher came into play....I almost fell off my stool when he shot that across your bow. It was so unlike him to make comments of that nature.

Bondo, just got up and pulled mine out to show the admiral after reading your post right after mine, told her what had happened to the man that put all of the work into building that calender, then I had to go through the thread again to find some things, like the wood carving that he did, and tell her what a great person he was. By the way, I am only 2 years older than him, kinda makes ya think.

Y'all keep mentioning the calendar. Before my time on iboats. Is there a link so the newcomers can see more of Dons work?

Here's some of the links for the calender.

The first one asking for contributions (by way of photographs)

http://forums.iboats.com/dockside-chat/we-need-pictures-iboats-calendar-378442.html

The next was the announcement that the calendars were ready for ordering. I gather it was A LOT of work, and Don did a superb job. I asked a year or so later about the next edition, and was sadly told that the response to the first was no good enough to justify another... Shame, I liked it. And yes, Bills' barge is there.... :D

I checked on the lulu site, and it's still in place. The preview works and all...

That goes for me too. My very first post on here Don helped me out, before I could even blink he had responded with manuals, diagrams, troubleshooting flow charts, the guy just loved to help the diy newbie boater like me. I felt like I could rebuild anything that could break on that boat knowing that people like him were around and so willing to help. What an awesome dude. I barely knew him, but I'll truly miss him. May our good Lord rest his soul, and help his family.

RIP, Don S. You keyboard-screamed at me the first time I posted for not putting up all my needed info, but two or three posts later you had fixed my problem. The Master of Mercruisers. My heart goes out to his family.

My condolences.. I have been reading allot of his solutions to some issues that everyone was having and just recently joined hoping to get some of his advice on the issue I was having with my boat. He seemed to be very knowledgeable and helpful to many and very detailed. Again, my condolences.

Re: The passing of Don S

I just found out about Don S. My heart sank. I had just posted my first thread after being a long time lurker, and I was looking at how to insert photos. Of course it was Don S's "how to" thread that I went to. I had read many of Don S's posts in the last couple of years, and I had learned so much from this internet "stranger". He came across, at first, as a crotchety old know-it-all. Not for any real reason, just the way it seemed he came across in the first few posts I happened to read. His avatar may have influenced me a bit...

I soon saw how passionate Don S. was about helping others with their problems. His subject knowledge became obvious. He quickly became one of few posters that I would immediately stop and read when scanning through a thread.

I know that Don S. lived in my region, and for all I know, could have been a neighbor. For those of you that knew Don or were touched by him? my sincere condolences.
