.... but who's holding the pot.
Ummmm....that would be the banks :)

Sounds like a purty safe bet for the insurance company?
Insurance companies are in the business of making safe bets; they are not big on risk-taking.
Most insurance actuaries are former cost-accountants who could not take the excitement. :D

Re: "SUPER STORM" for the northeast?

Thanks for the good thoughts guys. Power came on last night for 2 hrs but is on and off as repairs to the area progress. So many homes still are full of water that the power company is fearful of electricuting people.
Jolin ... Good news for you! I am in Lindenhurst by Montauk Hwy so you know what conditions are like here. The National Guard is doing a great job. Went around with them yesterday filling jerry jugs with fuel from destroyed boats. Getting fuel and non perishable food is key goal now. Water truck in town was a welcome sight. Repairs to home underway. Found most of my missing parts scatterred around. I am so fortunate as compared to many. Have a warm dry home this morning.

Angus, I live in West Babylon just below Sunrise Hwy, so I'm well aware of the Lindy damage. Heartbreaking. My friend Charlie's place off East Riviera had water inundate his ground floor to a height of 3'. He grew up in that house and the family is simply devastated. I've offered to help clean up and also to store some of his stuff if he needs me to. If there's anything similar I can do for you, shoot me a PM. We're all neighbors.

Glad you made it through unscathed, JoLin! Yeah! Also wishing the best for Angus and his family. Praying for strength and peace for the extended Angus clan.
Thanks very much! No worries now, just inconvenience. Thanksgiving is going to have new meaning this year.

Thanks for the offer! All good now. Good luck to Charlie. He is a few blocks west of me.

Glad to hear Angus and JoLin are okay and things are "stabilizing." The hard work of digging out and repairing starts next. Perhaps as a note of encouragement: When Nashville flooded in 2011 there was also some damage from tornados in the area, we got beat up a little harder than reported. Over the course of the following year, it was actually something of a boost for the economy locally. Most folks in our area didn't have flood insurance either (they called it a 500 year flood), but 12 months later many were looking back grateful for the boost.

Best wishes to all.

Which is the main reason that flood insurance is almost entirely subsidized by the federal government. Without that subsidy, there would be no flood insurance. The only people who buy flood insurance are those likely to need it.

Yep. NFIP - National Flood Insurance Program.

After our neighborhood was hit with an F5 tornado on April 27,2011, we were 'flooded' with volunteers for cleanup. there were 2 large farm owners from Tennessee (with several tractors with front end loaders) that worked 3 days cleaning debris from my yard. The first day they also provided hot dogs and hamburgers for the entire neighborhood. When the finally left they would not accept any money for their time or expense(fuel etc). Now that you start your cleanup you will see the real meaning of 'neighbors' even if you don't know them and they live far away.

Not that far away ... some of you 'Bamans were up here the year before when we got pounded. We have good neighbors down here in the South East :)

Re: "SUPER STORM" for the northeast?

Here in Charleston West Virginia we were expecting the wind but not the 8" of snow that followed!!!! We had heard that the mountainous areas were going to get hit but all we were supposed to get was rain and a few flurries at worst. SURPRISE!!!! 8" fell fast and knocked out our power for 3 days. Now it's all gone and except for the pile that fell off my roof and the tore up area from my snow blower you wouldn't know it snowed. Plenty of broken trees too. Still some laying on the phone wires. They seem to be in no hurry to fix it either. We got hit by the "land hurricane" (Derecho) and lost power for 6 days in June and had no water for 7. Temps were 98-100 almost every darn day. These blasted storms seem to be more and more common and vicious. Our power grid is weak as it is. Since we bought our generator in 2010 we have had to use it 12 times.....Really getting a workout. If we don't have storms we have fools stealing copper and knocking out substations. Hard to believe we had a great (last) day or fishing just a few days before.........

Anyway, the folks that are really hurting now are the ones up north, and some our our own state's people here who are still unreachable in the mountains. 2-3 feet of snow is hard to contend with and the folks in NJ and NY are having a time as well. Good luck to all of them. It will take a lot of effort to deal with this storm.....Hope there are no more of these things for a long time...

Re: "SUPER STORM" for the northeast?

We had really strong wind here in baltimore, 60-70 mph. I mean it was really nasty here on monday. But not many people lost power. I think its a testiment to the power company keeping the lines trimmed.
And I feel like the derecho this summer took down any suspect trees, so that all of the trees left were sturdy, and could stand a strong wind. idk if they got that dericho storm up north, in new england.

that storm may have saved us from this storm.

Power on for short time but off again now. 6 hr wait for 10 gallons of rationed fuel. Food and water readily available now. Expect one more week before power and normalcy returns. "It's like camping without leaving home"- my son Ricky. 465,000 homes without power today on Long Island (50%).

Re: "SUPER STORM" for the northeast?

Not to offend anyone but,,, I am shocked at how poorly people prepared for this storm, especially with days of advanced notice. I live in the mid-west where we can get some horrible storms and when they are predicting a really bad one we fill up the vehicles, make certain we have fuel for the genny, store drinking water and non-perishable foods, etc. You know, "plan for the worst and hope for the best". It's not as if the fuel won't be used, or the food eaten so there is no down side to doing it.
Two years ago we lost electrical power for 8 days due to a massive ice storm. My biggest complaint... having to fill the genny regularly and change it's oil.

Yeah, but....:)
You mentioned a previous 8 day experience that you had.....forewarned is forearmed.
Plus you are rural and make allowance that way as well.

I'll bet that as you got closer to metropolitan centres in your area, after that ice storm, that the level of preparedness dropped off substantially.
Hard to run a genny in NYC....it wouldn't be there long.

Look into one of these for the jerry can style or 45 gallon drum.
Just remember to check the oil every once in a while.
