Re: "SUPER STORM" for the northeast?

RBH, we have a tri level home with a partially finished basement. The main level which includes the kitchen, dining room, living room(open floor plan) is full of windows. No place for a fireplace. One level down isn't set up for a fireplace either. Would have to go in the basement. The chimney/pipe would have to pop out by the kitchen window. Since we have a 500 gal "pig", we just figured a ventless heater would be the easiest and most convenient......

That's why ya leave the windows open. Fyi carbon monoxide alarms are cheap as smoke alarms and should be in every home. Don't tell me that you haven't got one? Gasp!

You're depending on there being enough of a draft to pull the gases out of the house, which may not be the case. Up here in the north east, every major storm that comes through where people loose power, there are always a few sad stories of deaths by a generator located too close, or inside a house.

We had freak snow storm in October of last year that dropped a couple inches of heavy wet snow. Since the trees hadn't dropped all there leaves, lots of branches came down, and wiped power out for hundreds of thousands of people, some of which went with out power for over a week. The story from that storm that stands out is one of a family had their generator running in an attached garage, with the garage door wide open. Unfortunately, despite the massive opening for the gases to escape, the family was killed by CO. For all we know, they had CO detectors (MA law), but keep in mind, not all CO detectors on the market are battery operated, or are backed up by batteries (especially the older ones).

No internal or external chimney??

Our wood stove sits on the main floor of our 3 story home so we use insulated chimney to go up through the next floor and the roof.

The other wood stove in the basement is plumbed into the external chimney.

being on the edge of the swamp we have enoght stuff to last a few weeks and theres all sorts of stuff in the shed for camping. i also have a few ups units that i converted to run of a car battery so the genny doesnt have to run around the clock. you would be hard pressed to stave as there so many rednecks around that are trying to divide a fresh hog as no one has the freezer space when the power is out. once fema got to our area it was impossible to tell them that i didnt require help and they would throw stuff in the back of the pick up when you stop at a red light. the poor old man down the road put up a sign asking people to stop leaving him food as his kitchen was full. i gave away most of the stuff to people in the neighbour hood as i couldnt use it or store it. i did keep the k rations they are still sealed in a big plastic tub in the shed just in case as anything is better than hog meat

I'm betting you would find a way to save your boat. ;)

Southside of the wind field. Forecasted 2-3' surge. No problem leaving the boat on the lift. Had the storm looked to track a little further south, I would have pulled the boat and chained the boat and trailer to a tree like normal and hoped for the best. There is nothing you can do when mother nature decides to make a visit.

I see that people are selling gasoline for $15/gallon with a 5 gallon minimum on Craigslist.

Re: "SUPER STORM" for the northeast?

I wouldn't point a finger at those suffering for being unprepared for flooding that hasn't occurred in centuries.

Angus, I feel for ya, bud, and I only quoted your last line because it struck a chord with me. Sometimes you have an event you really can't prepare for because you can't possibly imagine it.

Much smaller scale, but I recall the flood of 2008 in Iowa. Everybody knew a flood was coming. Some of them were located where they experienced some flooding just about every year. No big deal, just clean up and move on.

In 1993, Eastern Iowa had the Flood of the Century. High water levels rarely if ever seen before. Main cities involved were Iowa City ([pop. 68,000) and Cedar rapids (pop 126,00). A lot of talk ensued about preparing for The Next One but very little action was taken because most folks figured, hey, this was the big one. We'll never see one worse.

In July 2008, we had the Flood to End All Floods. River crests previously imaginable. E.g., in Cedar Rapids, the 1993 crest was 19.2 ft, 7.2 ft above flood stage (Flood of the Century). In 2008, the crest was 31.12 feet, or 19.2 feet above flood stage and a little over 12 feet above 1993. That came from the only gage on the Cedar River capable of recording a stage that high.

I personally know a number of folks who thought they were prepared and ended up being wiped out. They just never dreamed it could be that bad.

Hopefully what goes around will come around.

Re: "SUPER STORM" for the northeast?

I will say, we only have 1 heat source, a propane run boiler w/electronic ignition. We lose power, we lose heat. That is just stupid up here in the snow belt. We are looking at propane wall mounted heaters as we speak that can run w/o electricity. Been rolling the dice way too long.....

I put a blue burner in the upstairs fire place, closed off and insulated the flue. It works great, used it a few times before I caught on to burning wood. Last year we had a storm that knocked the power out for 5 days. Just kept feeding the wood stove like I always do in winter and the house was nice and cozy warm.

My Niece (25 yrs old) is a FL transplant living in Manhattan on a 22nd floor of some building. She laughs since she's moved there two Hurricanes have hit. She told everyone she knew to fill up the bath tub (for flushing) and stock up on batteries, drinking water and food. It took 6 days for the water and power to get turned back on, they had heat??? If she needed more drinking water she walked to her gym and work out, fill up a few extra bottles and went back home. She also went to the gym a few times to watch TV, elliptical machine and Modern Family. She was able to charge her phone and computer on floors 2 to 9 as they were serviced by generators. Work was in walking distance but closed for 4 days, no power, it's a financial/bank co. No car to worry about, it's in FL. For two days/nights she looked at the buildings across the street that had power when she didn't. She said she was very bored for several days.

Had a noreaster last night with 50mph winds and 6 inches of snow. Tens of thousands additional homes on Long Island lost power again last night. Over 300,000 out of power for 10+days now in two counties. Gonna be in the 50-60's this weekend to provide some relief to the huddled. Trying times for alot of families.

I heard an interesting perspective on this today, and I'll strip some of the political aspect out of it to put it on the gang to consider:

Gas for sale on CL is the free market at work in an interesting way. Consider the time expense waiting in line for a rationed amount of gas vs. paying the extra bucks out on CL avoiding the lines and/or perhaps getting the extra fuel you want. For some people the time savings might be (even considering going and making the buy) a bargain.

I just found that kind of an interesting perspective.

(For those in affected areas, I'm sure it's not quite such an "interesting discussion" as it is a cast-iron, pain-in-the-butt. Forgive me if it sounds like making light of your situation - not the intention.)

I guess it just depends how much you feel compelled to support the concept of a completely "free market" vs. your distaste for scumbags who take an opportunity to profit from a disaster.
