You mean going from a 4 to an I6? No sweat, you'll just need to move the front engine mount forward just a bit.

Thanks jas, that's what I was thinking. Need lot take some measurements to see how much floor space I'd lose, but I nthink not enough to worry about and I might even be able to put the space beside the engine to better use.

Well that I6 would be a sweet match to that 18' hull too!

that would be a nice set up with a 6cyl,plus it would be easier to find parts i would think.especially in mexico.good luck on your hunt.

Now let's see if,I can figure out how,to do a,post, right. I appreciate your help cedarjunki and I'll be looking forward to hearing from you again in a few days. Maybe I'll have this blessed deck project finished by then. Always something in the way of what I really want to be,doing.

well, apparently it was a bad year for winterizing as he doesnt have anything left at all! he said people have been calling him constantly looking for heads and blocks. sorry about that.

as for the straight 6 option.... i would do it a heartbeat! there a powerhouse for sure. many 18-20 footers i have seen had the option of a 4 or a 6 so it is very plausible. in reality, you should use alot less gas with the 6 as she wouldnt be working so hard all the time. good luck!

Hey, thanks for trying. I do appreciate it, but so far my luck isn't running too well with this motor issue. I've had two calls w/6 cyl set ups but both had issues that make me hesitate. I did get an email from a guy with a 4 cyl 120 and a brand new out drive that's interesting, but I've been hoping to come up with a 140 or 165. But I may be willing to settle for the 120 if it's in as good condition as he says it is.

Again, thanks for trying.

i honestly dont think you will notice much if any differance between the 120 and 140...especially since you dont know how it was with the 140. i have the 120 in my heavy *** glass starcraft, my father had a 140 in his boat and swapped in a 120 in his 2 years ago with no real noticable diff. (outdrives are the same for 120/140)

I have to agree with CJ ^^^
20 hp difference in a car absolutely makes a huge difference.
In an I/O, not so much.
The 120 is a solid, economical engine to run and very straightforward and simple to work on, even out on the water.

putting it another way, how much horsepower do you need in a hull that weighs abt 700lb?

Re: Starcraft SS 18' I/O restore project

Thanks guys. That's sort of what I was hoping to hear. The guy with the 120 only lives about ten miles away so I guess i'll go see him sometime this week. In the mean time, I've got to get a thread started on my Falcon 14 which I've made some progress on this past week. Should get it going tomorrow or Thursday.

By the way, anybody know what an Aristocraft is. This motor and out drive are on an Aristocraft 19. I'm not familiar with that boat but guess I'll look it up on the web tonight.

yes, there one hell of a boat for being fiberglass!!! virtually unsinkable!! (double foam cored hulls) there are many that love these old boats on here! my father still has and uses his 1970 nineteen! buy it then sell the hull to someone to restore and get your money back! :D

Re: Starcraft SS 18' I/O restore project

yah, I just looked through the Aristocraft thread. Very nice looking boats and I love the sliding top. However, most have the molded fiberglass floor which would make modification difficult and they aren't set up as fishing rigs that way. Too much after deck and no place for fishing seats. Looks like a fun boat though, and if this hull I'm going to look at is in decent condition I should be able to get most of my money back.

And, I just might steal the sliding top hardware off this one and make my own version to go on this Starcraft.

All right, here we go again; yesterday I scored a MerCruiser 6 cyl and out drive attached to an 18 ft glass open bow hull that a tree fell on and pretty much destroyed it. Engine has 140 lbs comp per cylinder and spark plugs all a nice golden brown color. Out drive was removed by an amature and parts are floating around in the hull. Hope they are all there, but if anything is,missing I think I'll be able to salvage it from the stuff currently on the SS. Got a lot of good hardware in nice shape on it too and between my two boat projects I can use much of it. Got to get this hull stripped and unload it somehow ASAP as I've now got four boats in the storage yard and I can hear management complaining now. This donor boat was located about 125 miles away and I had to wait until 3 in the pm to see it, then after making the deal for $400, I had to drag it back to my place. Got home about 11 pm last night and snuck into the storage yard. Hopefully, nobody sees it for a couple of days.

I'll get some pics going tomorrow as today is already packed with other obligations. Got to get rolling on this SS 18 as I've already lost a month of time on it waiting for this engine problem to work itself out. I wasn't going to put a lot of time and money it until I knew I had a serviceable motor.

I'd want to pull the exhaust manifild out away from the block if it was me buying it to make sure there isn't a block crack hiding behind there. I find all the 165s I look at are hiding not to good stuff behind there... Hope you have better luck that I do.

Re: Starcraft SS 18' I/O restore project

So it's been one thing after another the last few days and hotter than hadies. I think it was 105 Sunday. Been a bit cooler since and not bad today, but it's been slow getting anything done on these boats. Finally got the engine out of the donor this morning. I had done most of the prelim work over the weekend, so all I had to to do,this morning was set up the engine hoist and lift it out. Here it is.

4301a4e4.jpg

But once I got it,out the fun began. I had planned to fasten it to my automotive engine stand so I could get it out of the way, move it around as necessary, etc. But being a newbie to I/O systems, I had no idea I'd have a 6 in splined torq absorber sticking out of the flywheel with some rather specialized tools required to remove it and then put it back later. I have several torq wrenches, but nothing that would properly torq that thing back to the fly wheel. But with it sticking out of the crank like that it wouldn't bolt up to the engine stand. Eventually I managed to Mickey mouse it to the attachment plate on the stand (no photos here) but it took me about 4 hours to get it off the hoist.

Heres a pic of the donor boat. I don't even know what it is, as it came with no paperwork and there is nothing on the hull that identifies it. I may have found a hull number on the transom today, but don't know for sure yet. As you can see its an 18 ft glass closed bow runabout. Top of hull has been damaged in the rear starboard corner and everything in it is a mess. It has a rack and pinion steering assembly in it I'm going to try to save, but currently it seems to be locked up. Haven't really had a chance to look at it yet. Has a lot of other good hardware on it I'm slowly salvaging. Once I get it stripped I'll dump it. I've called the county refuse disposal yard and they will weigh me in and out at $68 ton to dispose of it. I'll get out of it for less than $50. The trailer is in reasonable condition in terms of frame, axle and lights. It does have a busted bunk and the winch is missing a crank handle, so maybe I can get $125 bucks or so out of it.

Also got two of these, 12 gallon aluminum fuel tanks. They're a bit dirty, but in excellent condition and will be a great addition in the Starcraft.

Now I need to get rid of this donor and get on the SS 18. Its old engine is ready to come out. Then it's one more washout of the hull floor and time for Gluvit. Then determine what out drive I'm using and get the transom prepared. Then install the six. Can't wait to get that part done.

Re: Starcraft SS 18' I/O restore project

OK guys, here's the question of the week. Now that I have an engine for this tinny, I have to get the bottom painted. I have no practical way to raise the hull so I'll have to turn it over. That's not too big a deal; I can round up enough help to get that done. The big Q is, what am I going to use for bottom paint?

Im thinking maybe Easypoxy. I want something, that will cure up very hard. This boat will probably see beach sand from time to time, and as B2 knows, it may even see launches where boats are towed through the sand to the water line by pick-up truck. I don't expect to do this every launch, but stuff happens down in old Mexico where docks and piers are scarce as hens teeth. There is also implement or tractor paint, with which I have considerable experience. This stuff holds up like iron.

I'd greatly prefer to be able to spray the paint. I don't know if you can do that with the epoxy stuff. I know some of you have applied by the roll & roll method, but considering all the lap seams that seems a bit tedious. What ever, I'll do what's necessary to get a durable coating on the bottom. Tell me what you think.
