Re: STARCRAFT OWNERS Check in

I picked up this '82 Islander this summer. Its the only outboard version I've seen and I was looking for a couple years. I won't say what I paid (high end of wow!) or how much I have into the new cover, new tilt/trim, new starter, or new prop, (holy crud)...but I like it! Gonna use it thruogh next year to determine what I want to do to it. It needs paint on the exterior, the PO redid 75% of the interior/floor already. Need better seat mounts and updated cabin but it aint to bad.

Checking in....

I have what I'm pretty sure is a 1963 StarCraft - looks to be 16'. No idea what model. It's completely aluminum (looks quite a bit like http://media.photobucket.com/image/%252263 starcraft%2522/wrfalpacas/Boattenthweek008.jpg but there's no paint, it's open bow and has no canvas. Bench style seating...can't tell if it's original but the wood used certainly isn't. It was my grandfather's.

Thoughts? I'll try to get some pictures. Also...the trailer is single axle...needs new tires, new bearings, and appears to have axle damage. Thoughts on repairing/replacing the axle?

Sheldon if the axle is messed up you might be better off looking for another trailer . I see them in the $200.00 range all the time around here . Get us some pics of her and we may be able to narrow down the model.

Re: STARCRAFT OWNERS Check in

Rick - I posted in the trailer & towiung forum and they sent me to http://www.championtrailers.com/ - looks like I can get the axle for around $80 and the hubs (with bearings and seals) for $40 a piece. As long as I can wrap my head around it and do it myself, I'd be happy enough with that (though I still need to buy two new tires).

I'll see if I can get some pics up to see what model I've got. Thanks!

Northern tool also has axles. Heck they sell complete set-ups with springs, axle, and hubs. Just bolt it on and go. Your biggest challege will be getting the old rusty stuff off. Bolting the new stuff on is easy. I just redid a trailer. I thought I was going to buy a new axle assembly but I ended up just cleaning up my existing one and having the bearings done. I bought an axle hanger kit from Northern tool for pretty cheap and it had all the new bolts and hangers I needed.

Re: STARCRAFT OWNERS Check in

I looked at Northern Tool...only problem I foresee with their sets is my trailer is from the 60's...there is one leaf spring set centered over the axle. Modern design typically has two leaf spring sets, one on either side.

I'm going to have to drive in to look because my questions are the following:

- Can I easily convert the trailer to accomodate the newer leaf spring design.

- The leaf springs in place appear to be held in place by brackets which are welded on. I assume I can get the leaf springs off and just leave the brackets?

-Alternatively, can I drill a new flat axle (which is pre-drilled for two sets of leaf springs) to fit the centered leaf springs?

Re: STARCRAFT OWNERS Check in

Hi to all, what a valuable site! Thanks for all the knowlege you guys share. Early this summer I picked up a $250 Craigslist jem. Curious if anyone can give me some info about this boat year/model etc. Im thinking it is late '50s to early '60s The seller told me it is a 1956. The motor it came with is a 35hp 1958 Johnson...

Frye good lookin boats there looks like a couple classics . Brochures that far back are few and far between but I would say the seller may have been right on the year. They both look like nice projects and the Van backseat is an option many may consider for their boats :D.
