Re: Starcraft Jet Star 15 Restore

Ok. Thank you! On the side (i think its called the gunwale, its where I cyrrently have rod holders), It is not a flat surface. It seems to have been bent. How can I make this lat again?

Pix of the bend/dent.....

Depending on where it is, the surrounding surfaces, access & severity of the damage, there is no 1 best way to treat all damage. Often the damage has 'stretched' the aluminum, and unless you can shrink it, it may be tough to remove. Also depending on how the damage occurred, the aluminum may have become 'work hardened'. If you were to attempt to re-form it, the aluminum may fatigue & crack.... Heating the aluminum to re-form it can also cause fatigue & failure.

But with out pix, that ^^^ is all just info to keep in mind...

Wow I haven't posted in a while. I'm trying to get the windshid for painting. I plan of fabricating my own seat boxes to save money. Does anyone know of threads where I can look to start learning how they did it?

Also, is there a bran of paint people recommend. I plan on roughing up the surface.not going all the way to bar aluminum, ad then primer and paint.

On the bottom of the hull, there are what looks like rivets sticking up. They aren't holding anything in place so I assume the PO used them to fill holes. Should I take these out and use JB Waterweld to fill them?

Can you post a pic of these? They should be ok, my boat has a gazillion rivets sticking out of the hull.

If they aren't leaking, I would leave them alone. If they are, you can replace them, sealing with 5200 when you put the new ones in.

Re: Starcraft Jet Star 15 Restore

I will post one tomorrow. I would prefer to not replace them.

Next question: I have one drain plug in the bilge on the port side; however, water collects on the starboard side as well as the port side. The drain plug is too high to be effective. Should I use silicone to angle the floor to allow te water in the bilge to flow out? Do I install 2 bilge pumps, one on each side? Or do I put a drain hole on the starboard side level with the port side accepting the fact water will collect(rather not put another hole In the aluminum)?

Next question: Te transom would has rotted. I lifted the cap off to try to get the wood out when I ran Ito a problem. Te side panels that run run from the end if the windshield to the transom extend almost touching the stern blocking the wood in place. What needs to be done to seperate the panel to get enough space to insert a new piece of wood?

Re: Starcraft Jet Star 15 Restore

We need pics of those 2 questions too... but I'll try to answer without them.

1. You should design your floatation foam to drain and displace the bilge water as well as float the boat in case of an emergency. Bilge water isn't a bad thing as long as it all drains out when you pull the plug.

2. It sounds like you need to either pull the entire top cap to the boat or cut the gunwales at the stern to remove your transom wood.

Now let me ask you a couple of questions:

starcraftjetdeckframing_zps4efe78ec.jpg

What do you plan to do for deck support? The above wooden framing isn't the worst design and would be easy to rebuild, but aluminum framing would be lighter and you wouldn't ever have to worry about replacing it.

That floatation foam that's in there isn't the right kind and the amount is gratuitous and wouldn't even float your outboard motor if your boat took on water... what are your plans for floatation?

Re: Starcraft Jet Star 15 Restore

You can either bend the end up, as jas did, or make a cut with a jig saw. Mine was already cut when I got it from the PO who had replaced the transom:

In the end, I had to pound on mine from the bottom too, to get the old wood out. It helped that the wood was really dry after sitting over the winter, and that caused it to shrink just enough to let go. If you're in a garage or some shelter, that might help dry it too.

Here are the pictures of the transom rot:
Port:

Starboard:
Starboard Transom Rot.jpg

I think I will end up either cutting the extra off OR bending it back. I would rather not take the splash well off first.

As far as the random rivets, I will post pictures in another reply.

For the flotation foam, I have not really thought about that yet. Originally I planned on replicating what the PO had but the aluminum sounds like a better idea. Would I still have the stringer in the middle that the bulkhead (floor supports running horizontally) connect to?
What do I need to do to use the aluminum?

Re: Starcraft Jet Star 15 Restore

Due to the fact it is so cold outside  , I have decided to work on the engine and see if I can get that to work, Then I will begin work on the trailer, as I paint the boat. Hopefully only a few things left to do on the motor.

As far as painting goes, I plan on repainting the boat the same colors, Red and White. I don't have ANY painting experience with boats and have only painted rooms a few times. So, all that help I can get from prep to choosing the correct type of paint, to painting itself is very much appreciated!

Thanks for all the help so far guys!

Painting should be done fairly close to the end of your project to keep from messing up the paint job while working on your boat.

1. Leak test and repair any leaks before painting.

2. All structural work should be done, transom replaced and any deck framing.

3. Decking should be cut to fit but doesn't have to be installed if you're going to flip the boat.

Ok. I was going to replace the transom, and dash(glue a peice of wood over the existing one). Those should be done before painting. I will cut the decking, does wiring have to be in?

Wiring is pretty harmless and should be done when everything has been installed back.

ALright, then I just need to figure out the flooring. YOu mentioned above something about aluminum flooring. WHat are the advantages of that vs. WOod flooring?

Aluminum deck framing, you'll still have a plywood deck.

The aluminum framing is much lighter that wood and will last forever because it won't rot.

Scrap yards and recycle centers will be your best bet because it'll be much cheaper than buying it new.

.063 gauge (1/16") thick 1-1/2" angle should work nicely.
