Great job on the transom cap, that's a tough nut to crack for most of us but yours looks really nice! :encouragement:

Thanks! I gotta weld some filler pieces in the corners tomorrow, and trim the tops.

Re: Starcraft Islander project

Just got a call from the guy who has the 175 hp engine. He got some fresh gas and fired the engine up tonight. Said it started right up and idled fine. I'll be going to look at it tomorrow evening and hear it run, then do a compression check. Hopefully she'll be coming home with me.

Thought you might get a chuckle. The Cumming/Buford area also has a BPS and Academy depending what your looking for. Wish they were closer to me.

Re: Starcraft Islander project

Yep ^^^ got knee braces to help support the transom change from I/O to OB?

Yep, something will be added, just not sure exactly what. I thought about making 2 braces, so that I could leave the center free for bilge pump(s).
There will be a 1/4" plate both inside and outside the transom, to help spread the load. I'm thinking that I could Bend flanges on the inner plate, and tie those to the bottom ribs as stringers that would extend under the flooring. That should make for a stiff brace without having to rivet through the hull.
What think ye?

I think you'll want some triangulation/gusseting between the upright transom & horizontal stringer.

Although not an I/O conversion to OB, barato2's MSB Holiner thread has some good pix & info about his gusseting of the knee braces. And if I remember right, looks like something you might duplicate.

Took a look at his pics. I think the double brace should work (without a center one), as mine won't be that far apart.
My transom is 3x 3/4" plywood, then 2x 1/4" aluminum plates for a total thickness of 2.75" where it counts.

Re: Starcraft Islander project

I didn't notice it until you mentioned it, the 3rd layer of 3/4 isn't in the Z channel or the side channels. The thing is the forces with an OB aren't the same as with an IO and that's why there are the knee braces. The IO doesn't have 100's of pounds of weight sitting on the top of the transom that create a flexing forward of the transom at the bottom as does the OB. The IO is more of a twisting torque force on the transom and the outdrive is at the bottom so no need for the knee brace.

Re: Starcraft Islander project

Looked at the potential power last night. It's a 1983 Johnson 175 HP. Looks butt-ugly, needs minor cowling repair, cleaning, and re-paint. Lower cowling(?)(the 2pc fiberglass part) needs replaced.
Power tilt/trim works, it fired up without hesitation when cold, steady flow of water, seemed to idle a bit high after warm-up, revved up fine. Compression numbers (warm, all plugs out) are 92/92/95/92/95/92.
Although this engine has been almost completely rebuilt (new pistons, rings, bearings) it has not been in the water in 7 years. I found a few small coil wires to be in bad shape (brittle/cracked insulation), so new coils would be a must ($180-$200?), and I'd imagine that the carbs will likely need rebuilt (I can do this myself).

I gotta call the guy today, and either take it, or make a counter offer. His bottom dollar is $1k, which involves me hauling the boat to my shop, removing the engine, and taking ANYTHING that I want off of the boat (which he will haul to the dump afterwards).
There are several usable parts on the boat. A windshield which will fit my application (nice shape but needs center glass), several pieces of low railing that are in good shape, lights, an aluminum fuel cell, outboard controls (harness and cables too short), bilge pumps, aerator pump, ect.
For some strange reason I didn't even look at the gauge cluster. I should have, due to the seemingly high idle, but I'm not sure that there was a tachometer.

Welded filler pieces in the corners of the transom cap and sanded them down. Made from .090 5052 aluminum.

The Kicker :) sounds like probably a good one, snal. Comp no.s are a little low, but even and with 7 years of inactivity the rings are most likely sticky. Or it could be the gauge?? Working TnT and an easy starter, along with parts off the boat, Maybe a grand isn't a bad price.
