It is an 09 but is in really good shape. I've done enough research that leads me to believe you can rig either with old fashioned cables or the new wired system. The wired system would be sweet but you have to retrofit the motor with two solenoid actuators. Price for the actuators look to be 1600.00 which puts it of my range.

So have been away. The weather is not doing me any favors. Seven inches of snow over the last two days.

I have the motorBoat 1 010.jpg

I have mocked up a bracket swim platform and I think it is going to work.

I can buy the aluminum for under $500 and my buddy will weld it up for free.

If I can just get the weather to cooperate I can start cleaning a putting back together

The pictures make it look bigger than it is. It is 26 inches deep which is about the minimum depth that still allows the OB to fully tilt up.

Nice looking motor! Man is that going to look sweet! Can't wait to see the final alum. platform in place and a trial hang of the motor in place!

Re: Chieftain 1972 MK4

So in the shop most of the day today.

1. Everything is removed and she is vacumed out. Just waiting on some sixty degree weather so I can pressure wash the interior.
2. Ordering up the Gluvit tonight so if we ever do get nice weather I can paint her up.
3. Pretty close to buying the aluminum for the bracket but that can wait a bit as i need to weld up the holes on the transom and reinstall the new transom I have ready to go.

Question on the exterior paint schedule. The boat is as empty as it is going to get so I am assuming this would be the best time to lay her on her side sand and paint?

What type of paint are you guys using? I will be spraying but don't want to go too high tech unless it makes sense.

I'm at the same point in my rebuild, including the waiting on warm weather part. This is what I've been doing to strip bottom paint, and it works really well. Mine's obviously quite a bit smaller, but it's surprisingly easy to roll. I'm not painting the bottom, but if I were this method would work well:

If you right click on this image and then select "view image," it will go to a much larger version with better detail of the transom supports:

EDIT to add that you have to click on the image again to zoom...

There are a bunch of pics in my thread if you're curious.

Either go with good old Rustoleum (or one of its equivalents) or step up to a two-part marine paint. Don't mess with any of the so-called one part marine paints.

It looks like rustoleum has a number of different marine paints. Is the topside paint what your referring to or something else.

I think that EZ was likely referring to the plain old Rustoleum professional oil stuff that you can buy at any big box home store. It seems to be the preferred product on the resto forums. FWIW, that's what I'll be using for everything except for the deck on my rebuild. $30/gallon and it sounds like it works great.

Yep ^^^ Chem's got it ;)

BTW: Tractor Supply's Majic paint line is also a nice option.

Get an enamel hardener (BUT USE SUFFICIENT respirator protection, it's nasty stuff) it works w/ most enamels....

Woodonglass did a little research into Rusto's paints. Pretty much, they're all the same thing.

Re: Chieftain 1972 MK4

Haven't posted in awhile. The weather finally warmed up and I was able to pressure wash the interior. Looks pretty good but need to do more. I have welded all the holes up and have some grinding to do but will be re-installing the new transom soon. Question: I plan on sealing the transom totally but would it be a bad idea to take some automotive undercoating and apply it to the interior of the transom?

Will be posting pics soon.
